Sirena Class Italian Submarines.  Photos and history of the Italian Sirena Class submarines, launched 1933, including Ametista, Anfitrite, Diamante, Galatea, Naiade, Nereide, Ondina, Rubino, Sirena, Smeraldo, Topazio and Zaffiro.

Displacement: 701 tons and 842 / 860 tons submerged.  Crew: 45.  Speed: 14.11 Knots surfaced and 8.17 knots submerged.  Armament: One 3.9 inch gun.  Two / Four  13.2 mm guns,  Six Torpedo Tubes carrying Twelve Torpedoes.

 

Ametista 26th April 1933 Scuttled 12th September 1943 off Ancona
Anfitrite 5th August 1933 Sunk 6th March 1941 by depth Charges from HMS Greyhound and brought to the surface, hit by gunfire from two destroyers and eventually scuttled by crew
Diamante 21st May 1933 Sunk 20th June 1940 by HMS Parthian (Submarine) off Tobruk
Galatea 5th October 1933 Stricken 1st February 1948
Naiade 27th March 1933 Sunk 14th December 1940 by depth charges from HMS Hereward and HMS Hyperion and brought to the surface where her crew scuttled her. off Bardia
Nereide 25th May 1933 Sunk 13th July 1943 by depth charges from HMS Echo and HMS Ilex and brought to the surface and brought under fire form the destroyers off Sicily
Ondina 2nd December 1933 Sunk 11th July 1942 by depth charges from The South African Naval Force Armed Whalers Protea and Southern Maid and RAF Aircraft off Beirut
Rubino 29th March 1933 Sunk 29th June 1940 by |ritish Aircraft in the Ionian Sea
Sirena 26th January 1933 Scuttled 9th September 1943 in La Spezia harbour
Smeraldo 23rd July 1933 Lost September 1941, ion the Mediterranean cause unknown
Topazio 15th May 1933 Sunk 12th September 1943 by mistake by RAF aircraft 4 days after the Italian Armistice had been signed. bombing was due to no identification signals form the Submarine
Zaffiro 28th June 1933 Sunk 9th June 1942 by RAF aircraft Central
