Air Vice Marshal Aleksander Maisner CB CBE AFC (deceased)

Brought up and educated in Poland. After the collapse of the country in September 1939, whilst making his way to France to join the Polish Army forming there, he was arrested by the Russians and spent the next two years in various labour camps in the far north of Russia.

The German attack on Russia in June 1941 brought an amnesty to many of the imprisoned Poles and a Polish Army was formed in Russia. After attending the Officers' School of Artillery, Alec Maisner was posted to a regiment based in Iraq where he volunteered to transfer to the Polish Air Force, and was brought over to England for pilot training.

Unable to return to Poland after the war, he decided to settle in the UK and was offered a permanent commission in the Royal Air Force.

He did most of his flying in RAF Transport Command in the UK and overseas (No.70 Sqn) and in Bomber Command (No.50 Sqn) where he was involved in the introduction of two new types of aircraft - the Canberra and the Vulcan. He also completed a spell of flying duty with the Royal New Zealand Air Force as Wing Commander flying at RNZAF Ohakea.

At a later stage of his air force career he attended the RAF Staff College and subsequently became a member of its Directing Staff. In 1965 came his first tour of duty at the Ministry of Defence. As Deputy Director of Air Staff Plans he became deeply involved in planniong the contraction of the RAF presence overseas. Next came a posting as Officer Commanding RAF Seletar in Singapore with the unenviable task of closing it down and handing it over to the Singapore authorities.

On his retuirn to the UK, he was posted to the RAF College Cranwell as Assistant Commandant (Training). His arrival there coincided with the introduction of the Graduate Entry Scheme, and Prince Charles was one of his first students.

He spent the last four years in the Service back at the Ministry of Defence in a succession of senior personnel appointments culminating i becoming Director General of Personnel Management (RAF).

On his reitrement from the Royal Air Force in 1977 he was made a CB, having been previously appouinted CBE in 1969, and awarded the AFC in 1955.

His first civilian job was with Reed International where his responsibilities included management development, succession planning, career counselling, etc. In 1983 he became director of the Industry and Parliament Trust, an educational charity the aim of which is to improve the understanding between industry and Parliament.

He was President of the Polish Air Force Association, of the local branch of the Royal British Legion, and of the Henley on Thames ATC Squadron. He died on 21st December 2008.
