HMS Emerald - Cruiser

Launched : 19th May 1920

Initially there were three ships of this class ordered - the third, HMS Euphrates, was cancelled in November 1918. HMS Emerald was built by Armstong, laid down on 19th May 1920 and completed in January 1926. These ships were fairly similar to the D class, but speed was the major factor not armament. HMS Emerald after her commission in August 1926 went to Gibraltar, Malta (26th - 28th August) and on to Aden on her way to the China station, spending Christmas in Singapore and then on to Hong Kong. In August 1927 HMS Emerald left the China Station and joined up with HMS Enterprise at Trincomalie on 30th August 1927, leaving on 3rd September for Colombo before meeting up again with HMS Enterprise and relieving her at Karachi on December 9th 1927. HMS Emerald served in the Persian Gulf until 4th April 1928 beofre leaving for Colombo. At the outbreak of world war two. HMS Emerald served on Atlantic convoy duty 1939 to 1940, then to the East Indies 1941 - 1942, moved to the eastern fleet 1942 to 1944 and in 1945 moved to reserve fleet. Displacement: 7,550 tons Speed: 33kt Complement: 572 Armament: Seven 6 inch guns, Three 4 inch anti-aircraft guns and two 2pdr anti-aircraft guns. Sixteen 21 inch torpedo tubes and 1 aircraft.

Sold for scrap 23rd July 1948
