USS New York BB34 was built at the New York Navy yard and laid down on the 11th September 1911 and launched 30th October 1914 and commissioned on the 15th April 1914. USS New York went to Vera Cruz arriving 4th May 1914 joining the 6th Battle Squadron of the Grand Fleet along with her sister ship USS Texas. From November 1917 she was attached to the British Grand Fleet until december 1918. She was re-boilered after the war using the boiler which had been built for the Battle Cruisers ordered in 1916 which were never built. During world war two she spent most of her time in the Atlantic  but also participated in operation 'Torch' landings off North Africa and took part in the Pacific campaign, seeing action at both Iwo Jima and Okinowa.

Displacement: 27,000 tons,  Full load of 28,367 tons.  Speed: 21 Knots.  range 7060 nautical miles at 10 knots.  Crew 1042.  Armament: Ten 14-inch guns in pairs. twenty One 5 inch / 51 calibre guns/  Four 21-inch torpedo Tubes (submerged in the beam)

The Atlantic ocean was the lifeline between Britain and America, as well as millions of tons of raw materials, GIs were also transported over in all manor of hastily converted liners. Protecting the troops from marauding u-boats and German surface ships was of paramount importance to the allied fleets. Although USS New York spent a good deal of the war in the Atlantic, she also participated in the Torch landings off North Africa and took part in the Pacific campaign, seeing action at both Iwo Jima and Okinowa.
