Admiral Ciliaxs mighty Scharnhorst leads her sister Gneisenau and Prinz Eugen up the English Channel during Operation Cerberus, their daring breakout from the port of Brest on the French Atlantic coast to the relative safety of Wilhelmshaven and Brunsbuttel. All three ships survived what became known as the Channel Dash, not without damage, but the operation proved a huge propaganda success for Germany and a crushing embarrassment for the British. (PC) The Atlantic ocean was the lifeline between Britain and America, as well as millions of tons of raw materials, GIs were also transported over in all manor of hastily converted liners. Protecting the troops from marauding u-boats and German surface ships was of paramount importance to the allied fleets. Although USS New York spent a good deal of the war in the Atlantic, she also participated in the Torch landings off North Africa and took part in the Pacific campaign, seeing action at both Iwo Jima and Okinowa. (PC) The mighty Bismarck returns fire to the fast-approaching HMS Hood at the start of a battle that would see both adversaries tragically sunk. The Bismarck would later be attacked by Swordfish aircraft from HMS Ark Royal, damaging her stearing and allowing her to be caught by the British battleships Rodney and King George V. The once proud German battleship would be ruthlessly pounded into a twisted and burning wreck and finally finished by HMS Dorsetshire with torpedoes at around 10:30 hours on the morning of May 27th 1941. HMS Dorsetshire and HMS Maori combed the area of the sinking for survivors, between them picking up a total of 110 out of an original complement of 2,300. (PC) Designed by the great Ernst Heinkel, the diminutive D.1 was an essential stop-gap that provided the Austro-Hungarian pilots with a front line fighter until they were able to re-equip with Albatros scouts in the Summer of 1917. This little aircraft performed well and was generally held in high regard by its pilots, although it did have some shortcomings, namely that forward vision was extremely limited and the Schwarzloses gun was completely concealed in the overwing pod that made it inaccessible in the air. Most unusual of all was its interplane strut arrangement, designed to reduce drag, which gave it the nicknames Starstrutter or Spider. Aside from their flanking action for the offensive on Caen, their mission was to capture the airfield at Carpiquet, but they would first have to drive through the defenses of two battalions of the German 716th Infantry and elements of the 21st Panzer Division. (PC) Ships of Commodore Preble's Mediterranean Squadron are shown during the action of 3rd August 1804 when they provided support to the gunboats and mortar boats as they pounded the defensive walls and xebecs that were defending Tripoli. In the left foreground, the bomb boat Robinson rolls as she fires her mortar whilst the brig Argus takes up station behind Constitution, both of which are firing broadsides. The brig Syren is in the far distance, engaging more of the Tripolitan xebec gunboats, having cut inside of Constitution to engage the enemy more closely. Full Item Details Postcard size 6 inches x 4 inches (15cm x 10cm) none £2.90 The Good Old Temeraire by Ivan Berryman. (PC) The hero of Trafalgar, HMS Temeraire, is depicted here at sea as she was originally constructed, with her simple scroll figurehead, and the yellow hull that was typical of the period. She has her studding sails set on the mainmast to help make all speed as she punches through the heavy swell of the English Channel. For Trafalgar, Temeraire was repainted with the 'Nelson Chequer' pattern that can be seen on HMS Victory today, this magnificent ship coming to the latter's rescue whilst fighting on with a prize lashed to each of her sides. Post Trafalgar, her crew raised enough money from their prizes to have a new figurehead carved which she carried proudly even to the scrap yard at Rotherhithe in 1838, where she was broken up. Full Item Details Postcard size 6 inches x 4 inches (15cm x 10cm) none £2.90 HMS K17 by Ivan Berryman. (PC) K17 was one of the unusual K-class submarines operating in the Royal Navy in World War One. This class were unusual in that they were powered by steam while operating on the surface to allow them the speed to keep up with the fleet. They were also unusual in their notorious poor fortune, gaining the nickname 'Kalamity Class'. None of the class ever successfully engaged with the enemy, and yet 6 were lost in accidents, including K17. Known as the 'Battle of May Island', a series of unfortunate collisions between submarines and surface vessels in the misty darkness of 31st January - 1st February 1918 saw both submarines K4 and K17 sunk, with several other vessels damaged. From a crew of 56, just 9 men escaped from K17 and just 8 survived the freezing waters. Here, K17 is shown cruising on the surface with funnels up in 1917. Full Item Details Postcard size 6 inches x 4 inches (15cm x 10cm) none £2.90 In Destinys Hands, Trafalgar, 12:15 PM by Ivan Berryman (PC) It is approximately 12,15 pm on 21st October 1805. With the combined Franco-Spanish enemy line in the far distance, HMS Victory is just beginning to manouevre, having chosen the French flagship Bucentaure as her target. Behind Victory lies Temeraire, then Neptune, followed by the two-deckers, Leviathan and Conqueror and Agamemnon in the foreground. Victory is flying the signal Engage the Enemy Closely from her main mast. Most ships have their studding sails set on the larboard (port) side only trying to harness as much wind as possible to hasten their approach 1n such light airs. At this stage, the stoves will have been extinguished, the guns run out and all decks cleared for action, their floors strewn with sawdust to avoid slipping and to soak up the blood. The Marines will be in position the officers at their posts and gun crews may likely have been singing hearty songs to raise their spirits. Fate alone knew what awaited them, once the firing started. (PC) Just moments from her devastating opening broadside, HMS Victory prepares to pass the stern of the French flagship, Bucentaure, to break through the line of the combined French and Spanish fleets as the Battle of Trafalgar begins on 21st October 1805. Victorys guns had remained silent until this moment, Lord Nelsons flagship having already suffered severe damage during the approach, but now the gun crews awaited the moment when her double-shotted cannon, her mighty 68-pounder carronade and a shower of musket balls would smash through the French vessel, rendering it at once a useless hulk. Full Item Details Postcard size 6 inches x 4 inches (15cm x 10cm) none £2.90 The Battle of La Hogue by Benjamin West (PC) The Battle of La Hougue took place on June 3rd, 1692. In this encounter the English successfully attacked a French fleet anchored at La Hougue. They inflicted significant damage, sinking several ships and capturing others. The English fleet, consisting of about 90 ships, was well-prepared for the engagement and took the French vessels completely by surprise, as they had been anchored in the presumed to be safe shallow waters off La Hogue. This would contribute to their downfall however as the shallow waters meant the French ships could not properly manoeuvre.
