Canberra at San Carlos by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Looking slightly the worse for wear after her journey south to the Falkland Islands in 1982, the P&O cruise liner Canberra, requisitioned as a troop carrier at the outbreak of the conflict, is shown in the midst of an attack by Argentine Mirage aircraft in San Carlos Water during May. Believed by the Argentine pilots to be a hospital ship, Canberra herself was never targeted, but her proximity to other ships of the British task force meant that she was constantly in danger. (PC) The view across Battleship Row, viewed from above Ford Island as the USS Nevada gallantly makes her break for the open sea, coming under heavy attack from Japanese A6M2s from the carrier Hiryu. The Nevada was eventually too badly damaged to continue and was beached to avoid blocking the harbour entrance. In the immediate foreground, the lightly damaged USS Tennessee is trapped inboard of USS West Virginia which has sunk at her moorings, leaking burning oil and hampering the daring operations to pluck trapped crew members from her decks, while just visible to the right is the stern of the USS Maryland and the capsized Oklahoma. (PC) HMS Queen Elizabeth was built at Portsmouth and launched on the 16th October 1913. She was the sister ship to HMS Warspite, Valiant, Barham and Malaya. HMS Queen Elizabeth was the only ship of the class to have a full compliment of sixteen 6-inch guns. She was the only ship of the class not be be involved during the Battle of Jutland. But her first world war service included being part of the Dardanelles campaign. She bombarded the forts on the narrows in support of the Gallipoli landings between February 25th and May 14th 1915. (PC) Lord Horatio Nelson and the British fleet found the French 13 ship of the line fleet anchored at Aboukir Bay. Nelsons plan was to attack the French fleet on their unprotected port side. By the end of the battle nearly all the French ships were sunk or captured. The painting shows HMS Swiftsure in the centre with the burning 124 gun flagship LOrient behind. Full Item Details Postcard size 6 inches x 4 inches (15cm x 10cm) none £2.90 HMS Euryalus - Shadowing the Fleet by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Launched at Bucklers Hard in Hampshire in 1803, the frigate HMS Euryalus is probably best known for the small part she played at Trafalgar. She was one of four British frigates sent to observe the combined French and Spanish fleets as they left Cadiz for what would become the Battle of Trafalgar. Having shadowed the enemy through the night, Euryalus sped ahead to warn the British fleet, commanded by Admiral Lord Nelson. Too small to play a significant part in the battle itself, Euryalus stood off until the afternoon when she took the badly damaged Royal Sovereign in tow, Admiral Cuthbert Collingwood transferring his flag to the little frigate following the death of Nelson. By 1825, her career as a fighting ship was over and she was decommissioned to become a prison ship until the mid 1840s when she became a coal hulk. (PC) Against the darkening skies of an impending storm, HMS Victory is depicted entering Portsmouth Harbour. This iconic ship, launched in Chatham in 1765, is now preserved in Portsmouth's Historic Dockyard on public display and is still a commissioned warship in the Royal Navy. (PC) In early May 1941, in conditions of strict secrecy because the United States was not yet at war, seventeen pilots of the US Navy had arrived in Britain and been attached to Catalina squadrons of Coastal Command. These experienced PBY pilots were there to assist the Royal Air Force to become familiar with the Catalina, and also to gain operational experience for the US Navy. On 26th May 1941 Catalina Z of No.209 Sqn, commanded by Flying Officer Dennis Briggs RAF, with Ensign Leonard B Smith USN as co-pilot, joined the search for the Bismarck. At 1015 the aircraft was being flown in poor visibility at an altitude of 500ft when Ensign Smith sighted the Bismarck at a range of eight miles. The Catalina was flown towards the contact so that a positive identification could be made and emerged from the cloud only 500 yards from the German ship. (PC) Launched in 1943, U-861 was a Type IXD2 submarine commanded by Jürgen Oesten. Having previously commanded U-61 and U-106 successfully, he took U-861 to the Far East on a journey that took several months, sinking ships off Brazil and Madagascar on the way. Returning in early 1945, the submarine struck an iceberg off Greenland but managed to reach Trondheim in Norway without any casualties. Here, the U-boat was surrendered. Scuttled off the north of Ireland by the Allies, the wreck is now a dive site. Jürgen Oesten was awarded the Knight's Cross and sunk a shipping tonnage in excess of 100,000. He died in 2010. (PC) Commanded by Lord John Cameron, MTB107 took part in Operation Dynamo - the evacuation of Dunkirk in the first week of June 1940. Working with the destroyer HMS Vivacious, the Vosper Thornycroft experimental Motor Torpedo Boat delivered blockships overnight into June 3rd, partially blocking the channel of the port of Dunkirk. The next night, MTB107 worked with HMS Shikari to deliver two more blockships to complete the blocking of the channel. (PC) Admiral Nelson was fatally wounded during The Battle of Trafalgar by a French sniper's bullet while on the deck of his flagship. HMS Victory. Despite his severe injuries, Nelson continued to command his forces and celebrate the victory until be succumbed to his wounds later that day. His body was returned to Britain and he lay in state for three days which drew large crowds of mourners. His tomb is located in St Pauls Cathedral in London. More Text...
