HMS Courageous by Randall Wilson (PC)

HMS Courageous by Randall Wilson (PC)

Two Stringbags (Fairey Swordfish) pass across the bow of HMS Courageous as she staggers from torpedo strikes launched from a German U-Boat in the Irish Sea. On 17th September 1939 HMS Courageous was struck by two torpedoes from the German submarine U-29 about 190 nautical miles south-west of Dursey Head, Ireland. HMS Courageous sank in less than 16 minutes with the loss of 519 lives, including her commander Captain W T Makeig-Jones. Her total complement was 1,260 officers and ratings and two squadrons of Fairey Swordfish aircraft (48 planes). The sinking of the HMS Courageous was the first U-boat offensive against the Royal Navy, and more importantly, Schuhart's victory prompted the Admiralty to withdraw all three remaining carriers from the Western Approaches.

HMS Hood Opens Fire Upon the Bismarck by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

HMS Hood Opens Fire Upon the Bismarck by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

In the early morning murk of 24th May 1941, the forward 15in guns of HMS Hood fire the first shots against the mighty German battleship Bismarck. Both Bismarck and her escort, the Prinz Eugen, immediately responded, the latter causing a fierce fire on Hoods upper deck, while plunging shot from Bismarck penetrated deep into the British ships hull, causing an explosion that ripped the Hood apart, sinking her in an instant. Tragically, just three survivors were rescued from the water.

Prelude to Trafalgar by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Prelude to Trafalgar by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

21st October 1805. As Admiral Nelsons flagship leads the British fleet towards the Franco-Spanish line, Captain Harveys Temeraire tries to pass the Victory in order to be the first to break the enemy column. Harvey was discouraged with a customry rebuke from Nelson and duly fell into line behind the flagship. The enemy can be seen spread along the horizon whilst, to the right in the distance, the leading ships of Admiral Collingwoods fleet can be seen spearheading a separate assault to the south. In the light airs preceding the battle, much sail was needed to drive the British ships towards the enemy line. HMS Victory, nearest, has royals and stunsails set and is making good way, her furniture boats strung behind in readiness for battle. On her poop deck, officers prepare to run up a signal.

HMS Hood - Operation Catapult by Anthony Saunders. (PC)

HMS Hood - Operation Catapult by Anthony Saunders. (PC)

The pride of the British fleet, The Mighty Hood as she was known, was launched in 1918. Weighing in at over 40,000 tons she was 860 feet long and had eight 15 inch guns, at her launch she was more than a match for any adversary. Hood sailed the world in the inter-war years and was admired in every foreign port she visited, however with a lack of major refits in this time the second world war found the Hood unprepared for a major battle, On the 24th of May 1941 the German battleship Bismarck found Hoods achilles heel within only a few salvos, namely her inadequate deck armour. Hood exploded in a huge fireball from which only three sailors survived. Here HMS Hood is seen with Force H in the Mediterranean. Winston Churchill knew that the powerful French fleet at Mers-el-Kebir could fall into German hands at any time and that the threat had to be removed by any means. On the 3rd of July 1940 the French fleet was duly dispatched by Force H. The Strasbourg being the only French battleship a.........

Bismarck - Pride of the Kriegsmarine by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Bismarck - Pride of the Kriegsmarine by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Together with her sister, Tirpitz, the Bismarck was Germany's most modern and formidable warship of WWII. Equipped with the very latest in rangefinder technology and festooned with defensive firepower, perhaps her most daunting weapons were the eight 15 inch guns, arranged in four turrets, that were to prove so effective against almost every other ship that she encountered, the most famous of these arguably being the Royal Navy's HMS Hood, sunk with huge loss of life in the Battle of the Denmark Strait in May 1941. Bismarck is depicted here in company with Prinz Eugen.

HMS Resolution - Polar Explorer by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

HMS Resolution - Polar Explorer by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Originally a North Sea Collier named the Marquis of Granby, HMS Resolution was purchased by the Royal Navy and fitted out with all the very latest navigational aids and a water purification system in readiness for Captain Cook's second voyage to the Pacific in 1772. During this voyage, in 1773, Resolution became the first ship to cross the Antarctic Circle, entering the southern polar region on three occasions. Resolution was also Cook's choice for his third voyage in 1776 when she crossed the Arctic Circle twice in 1778 and 1779. Following her voyages of discovery, she returned to cargo duties, but her ultimate fate is unclear, as she was captured by the French in June 1782 and was never heard of again.

HMS Sceptre by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Commissioned in 1943, HMS Sceptre was built by Scotts Shipbuilding in Greenock, Scotland. In a short career, Sceptre under the command of Lieutenant Ian McIntosh was involved with the X-Craft midget submarine attacks on German capital ships and floating docks in Norway. In addition, she sunk four enemy merchant ships and an enemy naval vessel between March and September 1944. HMS Sceptre was then refitted as a target submarine late in 1944, and was scrapped in 1949.

The Tenacious Belleisle by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

The Tenacious Belleisle by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Few ships fought more bravely than HMS Belleisle at the Battle of Trafalgar. Having been second in the line of Collingwood’s leeward division, the 74-gun Belleisle took on a number of opponents including the Monarca, Santa Ana and Indomtable, but soon found herself surrounded by enemy ships that poured weighty broadsides into her. By 2.30 in the afternoon, Bellisle was little more than a floating wreck, having lost all of her masts and bowsprit, yet still she fought bravely on, her colours flying defiantly from the stump of her mizzen mast. Belleisle survived her ordeal and was towed to Gibraltar after the battle where temporary repairs were made, arriving in Plymouth for a refit on 5th December 1805.
