Operation Drumbeat by Anthony Saunders (PC)

Operation Drumbeat by Anthony Saunders (PC)

The entry of the United States into the war opened up vast new hunting grounds for the German u-boat fleet. Operation Paukenschlag (Drumbeat in English) began in January 1942, bringing the U-boats their easiest pickings of the war. Over 300 allied vessels were sunk during the Paukenschlag along the US coastline, ranging from New York harbor, to the Straits of Florida. This period, also known as the second Happy Times to the men of the U-boats, was only brought to an end in mid 1942 by the formation of allied convoy systems. On the evening of April 5th 1942, U552, commanded by Kapitanleutnant Erich Topp, sealed the fate of the British tanker MV British Splendour east of Cape Hatteras. The U-boat was part of the fourth wave of boats of Operation Paukenschlag, she returned to Saint Nazaire on April 27th 1942 having sunk seven ships during the patrol.

Admiral Graf Spee enters Montevideo by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Admiral Graf Spee enters Montevideo by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Showing visible signs of her tangle with British cruisers at the Battle of the River Plate, the German pocket battleship Graf Spee slips into the neutral waters of the Montevideo roadstead accompanied by the Uruguayan gunboat Rio Negro for light repairs. (Damage can be seen on the hull and behind the Conning tower ) . This was to be the last haven for the Graf Spee which was later scuttled at the harbour mouth, her commander Kapitan zur See Langsdorff believing a large British fleet to be waiting for attempted escape into the South Atlantic.

Bismarck - The Final Voyage by Anthony Saunders. (PC)

Bismarck - The Final Voyage by Anthony Saunders. (PC)

One of the finest battleships of all time, Bismarck was built by the Blohm and Voss shipyard in Hamburg and launched in February 1939. Her first duty was for commerce raiding in the north Atlantic. Together with the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen, the destroyers Z10, Z16 and Z23 and a minesweeper. The Bismarck, commanded by Vice Admiral Gunther Lutjens, left her last anchorage at Grimstadt Fjord in Norway. Once Bismarcks departure was confirmed all available British forces were deployed to meet the threat. On the 24th of May 1941 the Bismarck sailed into naval history - sinking the battlescruiser and pride of the British fleet - HMS Hood. But Bismarck would have little time to celebrate, she was sunk by a scorned British fleet three days later. Here Bismarck is depicted on the evening of the 21st May 1941 entering the open sea on her fateful final voyage.

Boiling Point - USS Missouri by Anthony Saunders. (PC)

Boiling Point - USS Missouri by Anthony Saunders. (PC)

Launched on the 29th of January 1944, USS Missouri was the last and one of the finest battleships of any fleet. With a top speed of 33 knots, she earnt the name Fast Battleship, as the Iowa class to which she belonged were known. Bristling with an assortment of anti-aircraft, Missouri was as much a floating anti-aircraft battery as a battleship. With these qualities Missouri was well equiped to counter the desperate aerial attacks faced when she joined the Pacific Fleet. Here Missouri is seen repelling a kamikaze attack on the 11th of April 1945, with the destroyers Melvin (left) and McCord. Although one of the kamikazes did get through the curtain of shell fire, little damage was sustained.

Nemesis by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Nemesis by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Arguably the most iconic moment in British naval history, HMS Victory is depicted just moments from firing her devastating opening salvo into the stern galleries of the French flagship Bucentaure at Trafalgar as Nelson's flagship enters the fray at approximately 12.30pm on October 21st 1805. Beyond Victory, in the extreme distance through the gun smoke, Collingwood's Royal Sovereignis engaging the Santa Ana. To the left of the painting, the French Neptune and Spanish San Justo can be seen with Redoutable immediately beyond Victory, trying vainly to close the gap. Victory, already shot to pieces, is about to wreak her terrible revenge on the Bucentaure in the foreground where Vice-Admiral Villeneuve can be seen on the poop deck - wearing the green corduroy pantaloons. Nelson was surely the nemesis of Villeneuve, who had been summarily humiliated some seven years earlier at the Battle of the Nile and.........

HMS Hermes - Under Leaden Skies by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Laid down as early as June 1944, HMS Hermes (R12) was not commissioned into the Royal Navy until 25th November 1959. This fine ship has enjoyed a long and varied career, perhaps its most notable role being that of flagship to the British Task Force that was sent to liberate the Falkland Islands following the Argentine invasion of 1982. She was decommissioned in 1984 and sold to the Indian Navy, whereupon she was renamed Viraat. Hermes is depicted here in stormy weather in the late 1970s before the Harrier 'ski jump' was added to her bow in readiness for the Falklands Campaign.

HMS Poseidon by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Launched in Barrow in Furness on 22nd August 1929, the Parthian Class submarine HMS Poseidon (P99) was destined to meet a tragic fate on 9th June 1931 when she was inexplicably involved in a collision with a Chinese freighter in the Bohai Sea during exercises in clear visibility. 31 of her crew managed to get into the water before the submarine sank, whilst a further eight escaped from the submerged vessel. Two of these didn't make it to the surface and one died later in hospital, making a tragic total of 21 deaths in this extraordinary tragedy. Tribute to William F Dickson by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Tribute to William F Dickson by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

19th July 1918 - the Tondern raid, the first raid in history carried out from an aircraft carrier. Captain Dickson is shown in his Sopwith Camel 2F.1 departing HMS Furious just after 3am, and along with 5 other aircraft would successfully attack the German Zeppelin sheds at Tondern in Denmark. They destroyed two airships in their hangar, and the entire base was subsequently abandoned. 7 aircraft began the raid : one turned back with engine trouble, three landed in Denmark afterwards while another failed to return to the British fleet. Only Dickson and Captain B Smart ditched in the sea near the British ships and were recovered. For this raid, Dickson was awarded the Distinguished Service Order. He later moved to HMS Revenge and HMS Queen Elizabeth then flew on HMS Argus and was a test pilot at the Royal Aircraft Establishment. In World War Two he helped to plan the Allied invasion of occupied Europe. He remained in the RAF post war, retiring in 1959 as Marshal of the Royal Air Fo.........
