USS North Carolina ,Saipan Bound by Anthony Saunders. (PC)

By June 1944 the US Fleet had made a huge leap across the Pacific to the Marianas, a small group of Japanese held islands of which Saipan would prove the most difficult to overcome. The landing were supported by the US 5th Fleet, which included USS North Carolina together with an increasingly powerful armada of battle hardened warships.

The Attack on the Admiral Hipper by HMS Glowworm by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

HMS Glowworm, burning severely after receiving hits from the mighty Admiral Hipper, is depicted turning to begin her heroic sacrifice off the Norwegian coast on 8th April 1940. Hugely out-gunned and already crippled, Glowworms captain, Lieutenant-Commander Roope rammed his destroyer into the side of the Admiral Hipper, inflicting a 40 metre rip in its armour belt before drifting away and exploding. 38 British sailors were rescued from the sea and Roope was awarded a posthumous VC for his bravery, the first earned by the Royal Navy in WWII.

The Battle of Copenhagen, 2nd April 1801 by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

The Battle of Copenhagen, 2nd April 1801 by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

The key to Nelsons victories always lay in his meticulous planning and the Battle of Copenghagen was no exception as he used his fleet to first destroy the Danish floating defences so that his bomb vessels could be brought up to bombard the city itself. The Danes eventually capitulated, but they had fought hard and over 2,000 men had died on both sides before the end of the battle. In this view, HMS Elephant, carrying the flag of Vice Admiral Horatio Nelson, dominates the scene as the battle gathers intensity. British ships depicted, left to right, are the Glatton (54), Elephant (74), Ganges (74) and Monarch (74)

The Battle of Trafalgar, 1.00pm by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Having taken terrible punishment from the guns of the allied French and Spanish fleet as she broke through the line, HMS Victory found herself engaged by the French Redoutable, a bitter battle that saw the two ships locked together, pouring shot into one another with terrifying ferocity and which left the British Admiral, Lord Horatio Nelson fatally wounded. In the background, HMS Neptune is emerging through the gunsmoke and is about to pass the wreck of the French flagship Bucentaure which Victory so spectacularly routed as she passed through the allied line. HMS Temeraire, which followed Victory through, and which was also to become embroiled on the Redoutables fight, is obscured by the smoke beyond the British flagship.

The Temeraire's Last Journey by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

The Temeraire's Last Journey by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Few ships have been immortalised in art more than HMS Temeraire, a 98-gun veteran of the Battle of Trafalgar and iconic subject of JMW Turner's memorable painting. Although one of the finest paintings ever produced, it is known that Turner's version of this magnificent old ship's voyage to the breaker's yard is pure whimsy, composed to inspire pride and sentiment in equal parts. This painting is, perhaps, a more truthful rendering of the same scene. Here, the mighty Temeraire is reduced to a floating hulk, stripped of her masts, bowsprit and rigging, her bitumen-coated hull gutted of anything useful. It is 7.30am on 5th September 1838. As the tide is judged to be just right, the steam tugs Sampson and Newcastle, piloted by William Scott and a crew of 25, take up the strain of the Temeraire's 2,121 tons to begin the slow journey from Sheerness to Rotherhithe, where she will be slowly taken to pieces at the yard of John Beatson. Whilst HMS Victory stands today in al.........

HMS Thrasher by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

HMS Thrasher by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

A T-Class submarine of the Royal Navy launched in 1940 and commissioned in May 1941, HMS Thrasher famously survived an attack by aircraft in 1942, her crew gaining two Victoria Crosses in the process. Immediately after attacking a supply vessel on 16th February, HMS Thrasher was bombed from the air but escaped unscathed. After resurfacing, two unexploded bombs were discovered within the casing of the submarine. The first was easily removed but the second took a contorted effort in confined spaces - an hour-long combined effort by Lt Roberts and PO Gould literally manhandled the lethal ordnance safely over the side. For actions that likely save the submarine, they were both awarded the Victoria Cross.

HMS Bounty by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

HMS Bounty by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Forever associated with the famous mutiny, HMS Bounty sailed to the South Pacific in the late 18th century. After almost a year and a half on a botanical mission, the experienced Captain William Bligh who had previously sailed with Captain James Cook on expeditions, was ordered with his supporters into the ship's boat by the mutineers, led by Fletcher Christian. Ultimately, the mutineers settled on Pitcairn Island, evading the Royal Navy for some 35 years by which time only one survivor of the mutiny remained, and Bligh reached safety after more than a month.

Crippled but Unconquered: The Belleisle at Trafalgar, October 21st 1895 by W. L Wyllie (PC)

At the Battle of Trafalgar on October 21 1805, HMS Belleisle, a British 74-gun ship under Captain William Hargood, was one of the first ships to engage the enemy. As part of Admiral Collingwood's column, she became isolated and surrounded by as many as four French and Spanish ships. Despite being heavily damaged, losing all her masts, and nearly unmanageable, Belleisle fought stubbornly and held out until reinforcements arrived.
