HMS Ajax by Ivan Berryman. (PC) HMS Ajax was built as a light cruiser at Barrow and launched in 1935. She saw service initially in the American and West Indies theatre before temporary commission in the Mediterranean. Then followed her never to be forgotten role in the Battle of the River Plate ending in the scuttling of the Graf Spee. (PC) Swordfish of 825 Sqn led by Lt-Cdr Esmonde begin their heroic attack on the battlescruisers Scharnhorst and Gneisenau and the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen as they make their way up the English Channel from Brest during Operation Cerberus on 12th February 1942. Although all the aircraft were lost and no significant damage was done to the German fleet, all the pilots were decorated for their bravery and Lt-Cdr Esmonde received the first Fleet Air Arm VC to be awarded, albeit posthumously. The painting depicts the first wave of Swordfish attacking the Scharnhorst with Gneisenau taking avoiding action in the distance. A German torpedo boat has turned to confront the attacking aircraft. (PC) The Pedestal Convoy, to provide desperately needed supplies to the beleaguered Mediterranean island of Malta in August 1942, was perhaps one of the most famous and strategically important convoys of World War II. It had a powerful escort, including three aircraft carriers, one of which was HMS Indomitable. Closely escorted by the cruiser HMS Sirius, she came under heavy attack from both German and Italian bombers on the 12th of August 1942 and was eventually forced to turn back after bomb damage put her flight deck out of action. (PC) German Schnell Boats were heavily armed coastal craft often referred to by the Royal Navy as E-boats. Fast, and better armed than the Royal navy MTBs and PT-boats, they became the most effective inshore attack craft of World War Two. Lurssen built the first German MTB in 1930, originally called UZ16 it would later become W1 and finally S1 in 1932. All German Schnell Boats would carry two seperate torpedo tubes. In total 249 Schnell Boats were built for the Kriegsmarine, with a total of 157 being lost or scuttled. (PC) Although entirely fictitious, this scene depicts a typical action by pirates in the early 1700s, most likely in the Caribbean where the many supply routes from Europe converged and offered rich pickings. Although fraught with danger, the rewards for the buccaneers were rich and plenty, many of them rising to great notoriety for their daring exploits. (PC) Still showing some signs of her encounter with HMS Macedonian on 25th October 1812 and under the command of Captain Stephen Decatur, USS United States is shown surging through a heavy Atlantic swell en route for Newport, Rhode Island, which she would eventually reach on 4th December, in company with the Macedonian, who she had so decisively defeated and taken as a prize. Full Item Details Postcard size 6 inches x 4 inches (15cm x 10cm) none £2.90 The Mary Rose by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Often reported to have had a brief and tragic career, Henry VIII's warship Mary Rose in fact enjoyed 34 years of service in what was then known as the Navy Royal. There is uncertainty about the date and whereabouts of her original construction but, having being bought into the King's Navy, she first saw action in 1512, the first of many skirmishes with the French. In 1522, she was put into reserve and was eventually refitted between 1535/36. Exactly how much her appearance changed during her refit is not known but she was back on front-line duty for the Battle of the Solent - again against the French fleet - in 1545. It was during this action that she mysteriously heeled over and sank, although no one knows for sure exactly why. The Mary Rose lay on the seabed until 1982, when her substantial remains were raised and preserved for all time at Portsmouth, where she can be viewed today. (PC) The Type VIIC U-Boat U-453 began service in June 1941 under the command of Knight's Cross winner Egon-Reiner von Schlippenbach and claimed 10 vessels sunk including the Royal Navy minesweeper HMS Hebe. U-453 was sunk on 21st May 1944 by the destroyers HMS Tenacious, HMS Termagant and HMS Liddesdale off the coast of Italy. (PC) Few ships availed themselves better at the Battle of Trafalgar on 21st October 1805 than HMS Temeraire. Here, she is depicted engaging the French Fougeuex, the two ships inflicting the most terrible damage upon one another in the early stages of the battle. Some crew members can be seen on Temeraire’s foredeck, trying to cut away the fallen fore yard and sail while her fore topsail flaps helplessly above after being set on fire. The acrid gun smoke soon became so bad that Captain Harvey ordered the Temeraire’s larboard guns to stop firing briefly so that he could check that he was not firing on his own ships. Temeraire would eventually take both the Fougeuex and The Redoutable as prizes, at one point having one enemy ship lashed to each side of her hull. As an aside, Temeraire was most likely the only ship at Trafalgar to have no figurehead. Having been built during a more austere period, she lacked much of the decoration of her contemporaries.
