Battle of the Nile by Anthony Saunders. (PC)

Battle of the Nile by Anthony Saunders. (PC)

On the 1st of August 1798, thirteen French ships of the line sat anchored in Aboukir Bay off the coast of Alexandria, Egypt, in support of Napoleon who was inland with his troops attempting to conquer the country. As nighttime approached so did Lord Horatio Nelson and the British fleet. Nelson had been hunting Napoleon at sea for months; at Aboukir Bay he had found the French fleet, trapped and unprepared for battle. Nelsons audacious plan was to attack the French on their unprotected prot side, the plan had its risks; the whole of the British fleet could run aground in the shallows - but Nelson knew the waters too well. The Battle of the Nile was one of the most decisive in the history of naval warfare. By the end of the battle nearly all the French ships were sunk or captured. The 124-gun flagship - and the pride of the French navy - LOrient, had exploded with such ferocity that it halted the battle for over ten minutes. Napoleons ability to dominate the region had been crushe.........

Arctic guardian - USS Washington by Anthony Saunders. (PC)

In the spring of 1942, USS Washington was the first of Americas fast battleship fleet to participate in combat operations when she was briefly assigned to the Royal Navy. On 28th June 1942, together with HMS Duke of York, HMS Victorious and an accompanying cruiser and destroyer force, she formed part of the distant covering force to convoy PQ17, bound for Russia. In the Pacific later that same year, she became the only modern US battleship to engage an enemy capital ship, sinking the Japanese battlecruiser Kirishima.

Scourge of the Deep - Leonardo da Vinci by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Scourge of the Deep - Leonardo da Vinci by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Under the command of Gianfranco Gazzana-Priaroggia, the Regia Marina submarine Leonardo da Vinci was to become the most successful non-German submarine of World War Two. On 21st April 1943, she encountered the liberty ship SS John Drayton which was returning, unladen, to Capetown from Bahrain and put two torpedoes into her before surfacing to finish her off with shells. The deadly reign of terror wrought by the combination of Gazzana-Priaroggia and his submarine came to an end just one month later when the Leonardo da Vinci was sunk by HMS Active and HMS Ness off Cape Finistere.

Hunter's Dusk by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

In January 1941, the young Mario Arillo was appointed the rank of Lieutenant Commander, placed in charge of the Regia Marina's submarine Ambra and was dispatched to the Mediterranean to help disrupt supplies to the Allied forces. In May of that same year, Arillo attacked the British Dido Class Cruiser HMS Bonaventure, and Destroyers HMS Hereward and HMS Stuart, south of Crete, en route from Alexandria, the cruiser Bonaventure being sunk with great loss of life. The Ambra is depicted here in a calmer moment, two of her crew scanning the horizon for 'business'.

The Battle of Copenhagen - HMS Glattons Bravest Day by Ivan Berryman (PC)

The Battle of Copenhagen - HMS Glattons Bravest Day by Ivan Berryman (PC)

The battle of Copenhagen was long and hard-fought and Admiral Parker ordered Admiral Nelson to withdraw, an order that Nelson ignored. At one point a Danish frigate moved swiftly to attack Nelsons flagship HMS Elephant, but Captain Bligh of HMS Glatton sailed his ship directly into the broadside to protect the flagship. The Glatton, already displaying some damage, somehow survived the terrible barrage inflicted to its hull by the low-firing Danish vessel. The Elephant was saved and the battle eventually won with the unconditional capitulation of Denmark. It was surely Captain Blighs finest hour and an act of selfless bravery. In the background, HMS Bellona is aground on a sand bank, one of three British ships that failed to navigate the narrow channel.

U.123 - The Atik's Revenge by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

On 27 March 1942, Q-ship USS Atik (AK 101) received a torpedo hit from the U.123, forward of her bridge structure. The ship caught fire and, as her bow dropped in the water, she developed a list to port. U.123 closed in to finish the ship off, at which point USS Atik uncovered her concealed weapons and raked the U-boat with 50mm fire, killing one of the German crew. U.123 was driven off, but she submerged and fired another torpedo into the Atik's engine room which was the final blow for the brave Q-ship.

The Boy Hero of HMS Chester (PC)

The Boy Hero of HMS Chester (PC)

John Travers Cornwell was a British naval cadet who became a posthumous recipient of the Victoria Cross (VC) for his bravery during the Battle of Jutland in May 1916. At just 16 years old, he served on the HMS Chester, a light cruiser that was heavily engaged in the battle. During the action, Cornwell was manning a gun when the ship was struck and suffered severe casualties. Despite being wounded and under fire he continued to serve at his post, showing exceptional courage and determination. Unfortunately, he died from his injuries shortly after the battle.
