The Battle of Navarino by Charles Dixon. (PC)

The Battle of Navarino by Charles Dixon. (PC)

In this naval battle France, Russia and Britain were engaged against the Turk. The Allies fought bravely in concert, and on more than one occasion acted very chivalrously towards one another. At one moment the little British frigate Talbot was furiously attacked by a number of large enemy ships and was in desperate plight when the French warship Armide pushed in and effectively screened the British ship. The Rose assisted the Armide and Russian frigates also helped to bring victory out of this furious mêlée.

Tribute to the Royal Navy Trawler Crews - HMS Arab by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Having departed the Namsen Fjord in Norway, on a course home to England across the North Sea, HMS Arab was intercepted by a Heinkel He.115 and ordered to sail due east or be attacked. His orders ignored, the German pilot began a series of passes over the trawler, raking the small vessel with continuous fire from both of its guns. The gallant crew of the Arab returned fire with all Lewis and Oerlikon guns blazing, the Heinkel being mortally wounded as it made a low pass across the bow of Arab, finally plunging into the sea some two miles astern of the trawler who continued, without further incident, to her destination at Scapa.

Breaking the Line at the Battle of Trafalgar by Graeme Lothian. (PC)

At 12.30pm on the 21st of October 1805, Admiral Lord Nelson on board his flagship, HMS Victory, breaks the line of the combined French and Spanish fleets. The Victory is delivering a devastating stern rake to the 80 gun French ship Bucentaure, the flagship of the combined fleets, commanded by Vice-Admiral P. C. J. B. S. Villeneuve. Starboard to the Victory is the 74 gun Redoutable. This ship, the Victory and HMS Temeraire, seen left, became locked together soon after, the unequal exchange resulting in the Redoutable having the highest casualties during the entire battle.

SS Great Britain Off Cowes by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

SS Great Britain Off Cowes by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

One of Isambard Kingdom Brunel's most elegant designs, the 322ft long SS Great Britain of 1843 was the first ocean-going vessel to be made entirely of metal and also the first to be propeller-driven. She enjoyed a long and varied career before being abandoned as a hulk in the Falkland Islands at the end of the 1800s. In 1970, she was brought home to Bristol where she was fully restored and can be visited today. She is depicted in the Cowes Roads after her epic rounding of The Lizard on her maiden voyage, during which she had encountered - and survived - a violent storm.

Last Man Away by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Last Man Away by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

The remarkable Fairey Swordfish served with distinction throughout WWII, despite being nothing short of an anachronism. Its dated appearance belied a solid, workmanlike airframe that provided a stable platform from which to launch torpedoes against enemy shipping, the venerable 'Stringbag' sending a greater tonnage of Axis shipping to the bottom than any other allied aircraft in the Second World War. A Mk.II is shown taking off from HMS Ark Royal early in 1941.

HMS Eurydice at Anchor off Cowes by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

HMS Eurydice at Anchor off Cowes by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

After being re-commissioned under the command of Captain Marcus Augustus Stanley Hare, Eurydice sailed from Portsmouth on a three-month tour of the West Indies and Bermuda on 13th November 1877. On 6th March 1878, she began her return voyage from Bermuda for Portsmouth. After a very fast passage across the Atlantic, on 24 March 1878, Eurydice was caught in a heavy snow storm in Sandown Bay, within sight of the Isle of Wight, capsized and sank. Only two of the ship's 319 crew and trainees survived. Most of those who were not carried down with the ship died of exposure in the freezing waters. One of the witnesses to the disaster was a young Winston Churchill, who was staying at Ventnor with his family at the time. The wreck was re-floated later that same year but had been so badly damaged during her submersion that she was then subsequently broken up. Her ship's bell is preserved in St. Paul's Church, Gatten, Shanklin. There is a memorial in the churchyard at Christ Churc.........

The Wreck of the Empress Queen by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

The Wreck of the Empress Queen by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

On 3rd February 1916, P.S. Empress Queen, which had been requisitioned by the Royal Navy for war duties, was returning to Southampton from Cherbourg with 1,300 men on board when she struck the ledge at Bembridge on the Isle of Wight and was carried high onto the rocks by the rising tide. The Bembridge lifeboat Queen Victoria (ON468) was immediately in sttendance and, as the weather worstened managed to rescue the remaining 110 men on board over the course of four trips, most of the troops having been evacuated onto destroyers. The Queen Victoria was damaged on the rocks on her third trip, but managed one more rescue to remove the crew. For his heroism, Coxwain John Holbrook was awarded the RNLI Silver Medal. The Empress Queen was never re-floated and she eventually disintegrated on the rocks.
