The Battle of Trafalgar - The First Engagement by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

The Battle of Trafalgar - The First Engagement by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Midday, 21st October 1805, and Admiral Collingwoods flagship, the 100-gun HMS Royal Sovereign, breaks the allied line and delivers a shattering broadside on the Spanish flagship Santa Ana. Making great speed, Collingwoods ship had breached the Franco-Spanish line some distance ahead of the rest of his van and the Royal Sovereign suffered heavily as she quickly drew the attentions of three French and three Spanish ships. To her starboard, the French Indomitable can be seen firing into the British flagship while, astern of the Santa Ana, Belleisle and Fougueux are engaging ahead of Mars, Monarca and Pluton.

Trafalgar- The Destruction of The Bucentaure by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Trafalgar- The Destruction of The Bucentaure by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

With her mizzen top already gone and her sails aloft having received severe punishment, Victory breaks through the line behind the French flagship Bucentaure, delivering a shattering broadside into her stern. So severe was this opening fire that the Bucentaure was effectively put out of the rest of the battle, although Admiral Villeneuve himself was to miraculously survive the carnage. Beyong Victory can be seen the French Redoubtable, which is receiving fire from Victorys starboard guns, and the Spanish San Leandro is in the extreme distance. Most of Victorys stunsails have been cut away, but it was her stunsail booms that became entangled with the rigging of the Redoubtable when she put her helm to port and ran onto her. Admiral Nelson fell shortly afterward, having received a fatal wound from a musket ball fired by a French sharpshooter in Redoubtables mizzen fighting top. The Temeraire can be seen approaching the fray to the right.

On the Step by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

On the Step by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

The mainstay of the Royal Navy's Coastal Forces fleet from 1941, the 72-foot Vosper MTBs were among the fastest and most successful ever built. With their three Packard 1400hp engines and bigger fuel tanks, these boats could reach speeds of up to 39 knots with a maximum range of 400 miles. Armament varied from boat to boat, but those depicted are fitted with the standard 21-inch torpedo tubes and a twin .5 inch MkV Vickers machine gun mounting. Crew was typically two officers and eleven ratings.

The Sinking of U533 by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

The Sinking of U533 by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

U533 began its first patrol in April 1943, coming under repeated attack from Allied aircraft in 40 days at sea. The U-boat set off from Lorient in France for a second patrol, rounding the Cape of Good Hope and into the Indian Ocean. In the Gulf of Oman on 16th October, the submarine was spotted and attacked by a British Bisley bomber of No.244 Sqn, piloted by Lewis William Chapman. The Bisley was the name originally given to the Mk.V Blenheim aircraft. Already entering a desperate dive to escape, the depth charges immediately caused the submarine to sink nose first, leaving little chance of escape. Of the 53 crew, an officer in the conning tower managed to open the hatch as the submarine passed 50 metres depth, the pressure propelling Günther Schmidt and the unnamed officer to the surface. Schmidt kept the unconscious officer afloat but he died an hour later, while Schmidt kept himself afloat without aid for more than 24 hours before being picked up and taken prisoner - the.........

Nelsons Chase After The French Fleet, 1805 by Thomas Davidson (PC)

Nelsons Chase After The French Fleet, 1805 by Thomas Davidson (PC)

After Napoleons forces threatened Britain, Admiral Horatio Nelson sought to disrupt the French fleet, which was anchored at Cadiz, Spain. In October 1805, Nelson, commanding a smaller but more maneuverable British fleet, pursued Vice Admiral Pierre-Charles Villeneuve’s larger French and Spanish fleet.
