Built in Barrow-in-Furness and the 7th and last of the Trafalgar class of British submarines, HMS Triumph is one of the most modern and potent vessels of her kind. Selected in March 2011 to take part in the coalition suppression of Colonel Gadaffi's attacks against his own people, HMS Triumph fired a number of TLAMs (Tomahawk Land Attack Missiles) aimed at air defence targets on the Libyan mainland at the outset of coalition operations, helping to reduce the threat of air attacks by the Libyan Air Force.

Raid on Taranto by Anthony Saunders. (PC)

Raid on Taranto by Anthony Saunders. (PC)

The balance of maritime power in the Mediterranean was transformed at a stroke by the British air attack which disabled three Italian battleships in a few minutes. The target was the core of Mussolinis fleet, tucked away in Taranto Harbour, in southern Italy. The attack, codenamed Operation Judgement, took place in bright moonlight by twenty-one Swordfish from the British carrier HMS Illustrious. In the confined space of the harbour, their torpedoes had a devastating impact, at least nine torpedoes struck their targets. In all, seven ships were severely damaged, including the battleship Caio Duilio (left), Littorio (right) and Conte Di Cavour.

The Mighty Intrepid by Anthony Saunders. (PC)

The Mighty Intrepid by Anthony Saunders. (PC)

USS Intrepid was laid down in 1941 and was one of a class of 24 ships of the Essex class. This was the largest fleet of aircraft carriers ever constructed and proved the industrial might of the United States beyond doubt. Carrying 90 aircraft each, they formed the main air strength and striking power of the US Pacific Fleet against the Japanese. The Intrepid saw her first action in January 1944 supporting operations at Kwajalein. While operating in raids on Truk in February 1944 Intrepid was hit by a torpedo which damaged her steering gear, requiring repairs which kept her from the war zone until June. She then took part in operations off the Palaus, the Philippines, Okinawa and Formosa. She was struck twice by kamikazes in late 1944. Returning to action in March 1945, she participated in strikes against the Japanese home islands and Okinawa, suffering another kamikaze hit in April of 1945 - she survived the most hits of any other US carrier in the war. Here the Intrepid is se.........

HMS Warspite by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Popularly known as The Old Lady, Warspite was launched on 26th November 1913 and was still fulfilling a crucial role at the end of World War II. Even after being paid off, she escaped being broken up by going aground at Mounts Bay whilst on tow to the breakers yard. During the two world wars, Warspite accumulated fourteen Battle Honours including Jutland May 1916. She is shown in company with HMS Royal Sovereign in the Mediterranean in May 1940 when she was Fleet Flag.

Assault from the Deep by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Assault from the Deep by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Sitting menacingly at a depth of 15 metres below the surface, just 2 km outside the heavily defended harbour of Alexandria, the Italian submarine Scire is shown releasing her three manned torpedoes, or Maiali, at the outset of their daring raid in which the British battleships HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Valiant and a tanker, were severely damaged on 3rd December 1941. All six crew members of the three Maiali survived the mission, but all were captured and taken prisoner. Luigi Durand de la Penne and Emilio Bianchi can be seen moving away aboard 221, whilst Vincenzo Martellotta and Mario Marino (222) carry out systems checks. Antonio Marceglia and Spartaco Schergat, on 223, are heading away at the top of the picture.

Cutty Sark by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Cutty Sark by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Surely one of the most beautiful of the clipper ships, Cutty Sark is seen driving through a moderate swell en route to the UK with another valuable cargo. She was designed by the great Hercules Linton and her beautiful hull built by Scott & Linton's Dumbarton shipyards but, when that company went bankrupt, the nearby firm of Denby Brothers took over to complete the build. Today she is a magnificent sight, beautifully preserved and on display at Greenwich in London.

North Atlantic Predator by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

North Atlantic Predator by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

U-99 was commanded by Otto Kretschmer from launch in 1940 until being sunk in March 1941, less than a year later. However, during this time U-99 became one of the most successful submarines of the war, claiming almost 40 ships sunk. Attached to each side of the coning tower is a horseshoe, dredged up by the anchor, painted gold and positioned here for luck. This luck ran out on 17th March 1941 when the destroyers HMS Walker and HMS Vanoc discovered and successfully attacked U-99. Forced to the surface by severe damage, the submarine was then scuttled while forty of the crew including Kretschmer were rescued to become prisoners of war.

Tribute to the Crew of HMS Truant by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Tribute to the Crew of HMS Truant by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Commissioned in October 1939, HMS Truant served in the North Sea for almost a year, notably damaging the German cruiser Karlsruhe in one action. Sent to the Mediterranean, Truant sunk several Axis merchant ships here, including the Italian tanker Bonzo depicted in this painting. Tracked off the east coast of Italy in the dark of 15th - 16th December 1940, Bonzo fell prey to one of three torpedoes, and was finished off from close range, sinking rapidly. HMS Truant continued successful patrols in the Med until May 1941, completing an Atlantic crossing for refit in the United States before returning in October that year. Sent to the Far East in 1942, the submarine returned to the UK around the Cape of Good Hope for another refit. Returning to service in UK waters in mid-1943, Truant was again sent to the Far East, making it as far as Malta before turning back with mechanical issues, spending the rest of the war as a trials ship in the United Kingdom.

Kearsarge Sinking The Alabama - June 19th, 1864 by Henry Alexander Ogden (PC)

The USS Kearsarge sank the CSS Alabama on June 19, 1864, off the coast of Cherbourg, France, during a fierce naval battle in which the Kearsarges superior firepower proved decisive. This victory marked a significant blow to the Confederate naval campaign and helped diminish the effectiveness of Confederate commerce raiders.

The Battle of Trafalgar by John Christian Schetky (PC)

The Battle of Trafalgar by John Christian Schetky (PC)

Nelsons fleet, comprising 27 ships, faced 33 enemy vessels but employed innovative tactics that included breaking the enemy line, allowing his forces to engage the enemy at close range. Not a single British vessel was lost that day, with the enemy having 1 ship sink and 17 captured. The victory at Trafalgar ensured that Britain would remain a dominant maritime power and thwarted Napoleons plans to invade England.
