Its name means Exceeding Treasure and the treasure it yielded surpassed anything yet seen in the history of piracy. Long Ben became the pirates pirate. (PC) Alone in the aerial defence of Malta in the early part of WW2, these three Gloster Gladiators, nicknamed Faith, Hope and Charity, saw such intense action against the invading Italian air force that the enemy's commanders were convinced that a much bigger force existed on Malta. They are depicted here making a low pass over the destroyer HMS Dainty as she heads out of Grand Harbour from Sliema Creek. (PC) Prior to the British attack on the Italian battle fleet moored in Taranto Harbour in November 1940, the job of obtaining the very latest photo reconnaissance fell to the maverick pilot Adrian 'Warby' Warburton. Flying a requisitioned Martin Maryland, Warburton undertook a series of breathtakingly low level passes across the ships moored in the harbour, cheating a hail of anti aircraft fire and flak to bring home the vital information to Rear Admiral Lumley Lyster, the flag officer aboard HMS Illustrious. (PC) One of the most experienced and respected test pilots in history, Eric 'Winkle' Brown carried out the first landing and take off by a jet aircraft on an aircraft carrier on 3rd December 1945. This was accomplished in the second prototype De Havilland Vampire LZ551/G which had been extensively modified for the sole purpose of carrier operations. Not only was an arrester hook added, but the aircraft featured larger flaps and was fitted with the more powerful Goblin 2 engine. The first take off by a jet from an aircraft carrier is depicted here as Lt Cdr Brown lifts away from the deck of HMS Ocean on that momentous day. (PC) Legendary during her brief wartime career, Ark Royal heralded a new era in aircraft carrier design, possessing tremendous hull rigidity and a formidable array of defensive armament. Apart from her key role in Force H in the Mediterranean and the North Atlantic, Ark Royal also took part in operations off Norway in company with HMS Glorious. It was one of her Blackburn Skuas that claimed the first aerial victory of WWII against a German aircraft on 26th September 1939 and one of her Fairey Swordfish that crippled the mighty Bismarck, leading to the German capital ship's destruction at the hands of the Royal Navy. On 13th November 1941, Ark Royal was torpedoed by U-81 off Gibraltar, her severe list causing flooding to choke her boilers, bringing her to a standstill. (PC) At Dawn on 9th March 1862, as the American Civil War raged on, an extraordinary combat took place in Hampton Roads, a naval exchange that was to herald a new age and completely change the concept and design of modern warships. Having already destroyed the two Federal warships Cumberland and Congress the previous day, the Confederate ironclad CSS Virginia readied herself for another day's work, her target this time being the grounded Minnesota. As the Virginia approached her target, she was confronted by the much smaller Union ironclad Monitor which had just arrived after a fraught journey from New York. Thus began an exchange of fire that lasted more than three hours, each ship's shot merely bouncing and deflecting off its opponent without inflicting any serious damage. With her smokestack shot away, the Virginia now concentrated her shot on the Monitor's tiny wheelhouse where a direct hit blinded the Union ship&#......... More Text... (PC) One of the most iconic ships ever to serve in the Royal Navy, The three-decked second rate HMS Temeraire was built at Chatham in 1798 and spent many years blockading the French port of Brest before her finest hour at Trafalgar on 21st October 1805 when she came to the rescue of HMS Victory before capturing two prizes, the Redoutable and Fougueux, spending much of the battle with her captives lashed to her sides. After spending her final years first as a prison hulk, then as a guard ship in the Medway, she was finally sold for scrap in 1838, her last journey being the subject of JMW Turner's most famous painting. In this view, Temeraire is shown leaving Plymouth in her pre-Trafalgar state before receiving her 'crowned head' figurehead. More Text... (PC) The midget submarine HMS XE-3 made a successful attack on the Japanese cruiser Takao in Johore Strait, Singapore on 31st July 1943. Having evaded anti-submarine defences to reach their target, the Commander Ian Fraser and his diver James Magennis are shown preparing to attach limpet mines to the cruiser. Fraser then managed with great skill to position the main explosives directly under the ship before retreating back through the defended waters to safety. HMS Victory forces her way through the combined Spanish and French line, firing all her larboard guns into the stern of Admiral Villeneuve’s flagship. Bucentaure was utterly destroyed by the initial salvo with twenty of her guns smashed off their mounts and over 300 of her crew left dead or disabled. But Victory herself had suffered much during the perilous approach to the enemy fleet. Unable to bring any guns to bear, she received multiple hits from the Franco-Spanish ships, bringing down her mizzen top, her fore topgallant mast, her studding sails and smashing the ship’s wheel. The bowsprit, part of her figurehead and catheads were shattered, her anchors carried away and the entire bow, headrails and beakhead were peppered with shot. The title of the painting refers to a comment made by Admiral Horatio Nelson as HMS Victory began to receive fire from the enemy. (PC) As Nelson’s column of ships began their approach to the French and Spanish fleet at the start of the Battle of Trafalgar on 21st October 1805, the first four ships to break through were to be HMS Victory at the head of the line, HMS Temeraire, HMS Neptune and the 74 gun two-decker HMS Leviathan. Afraid for his admiral’s safety in the lead ship, Captain Harvey of the Temeraire decided to break away from the line in order to overtake Victory and be the first ship through, thus taking the worst of the gunfire from the enemy line as they approached. However, it was Admiral Nelson’s habit always to lead from the front and, as Temeraire manoeuvred alongside Victory, Nelson took up his speaking trumpet, went to his ship’s side, and sternly shouted, 'I will thank you, Captain Harvey, to maintain your proper station which is astern of the Victory'. Postcard size 6 inches x 4 inches (15cm x 10cm)'> Mid Atlantic Dawn by Ivan Berryman.(PC) Upon hearing the news that Admiral Villeneuve and his squadron had headed across the Atlantic to the West Indies, Nelson, in HMS Victory, set off in pursuit early in June, 1805, in the hope of engaging the French there, thus preventing them from combining with the Spanish fleet that were blockaded in Cadiz. Nelsons squadron comprised the 74-gun Amazon, Swiftsure, Belleisle, Canopus, Conqueror, Donegal, Leviathan, Superb, Spencer and Tigre, plus the smaller Amphion (32) and Decade (36). The chase to Barbados and back was HMS Victorys only crossing of the Atlantic and proved fruitless, as Villeneuve had already escaped, but this action laid the ground for the Battle of Trafalgar in October of the same year. (PC) In May, 1940, Operation Dynamo was initiated to rescue British and French forces from the beaches of Dunkirk. As well as the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force, over 800 small ships crossed the English Channel to help with the evacuation. Among them was the MV Bee, registered at Cowes and, at 7.30pm, she and her four crew set off from Ramsgate for the French coast. Bravely crewed by Bill Trowbridge, Harry Downer; Mark Hocking and Fred Reynard, the Bee rescued over 400 men under constant attack from the German Luftwaffe, but was eventually ordered to return home having suffered propeller damage caused by submerged debris at Dunkirk.
