HMS Ark Royal (1970s Carrier) by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

HMS Ark Royal (1970s Carrier) by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

HMS Ark Royal was the fourth ship in the Royal Navy to bear this memorable name. By far the most impressive, this mighty ship was built to include the angled flight deck, a revolutionary development at the time, with steam catapult. The end of fixed wing aircraft saw Ark Royal quickly become obsolete, being paid off in 1978.

The heavy cruiser HMS Dorsetshire is brought up to sink the blazing wreck of the Bismarck with torpedoes at around 10:30 hours on the morning of May 27th 1941. The once proud German ship had been ruthlessly pounded into a twisted and burning wreck by the British battleships Rodney and King George V. The Battle of Manila Bay by Anthony Saunders. (PC)

The Battle of Manila Bay by Anthony Saunders. (PC)

A splendid little war was how John Hay, ambassador to Britain, described the Spanish-American war of 1898. Though the war was small in scope it was large in consequences; it promoted the regeneration of the American Navy and the emergence of the United States as a major world power. Fought primarily at sea, the war created an American naval legend in its opening encounter between the pacific squadrons of Spain and the United States at Manila Bay on the 1st of May 1898. At sunrise Admiral Dewey, leading the American fleet in his flagship the USS Olympia, had caught the Spanish fleet, under Admiral Patricio Montojo, by surprise - still anchored off Sangley Point at Manila Bay in the Philippine Islands. Defeat for the Spanish was total and heralded the end of a once extensive Spanish empire in the Americas. Montojos flagship, Reina Cristina, is seen here under fire from the Olympia.

The Battle of the Nile, 1798 - The Burning of L Orient by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

The Battle of the Nile, 1798 - The Burning of L Orient by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Nelsons annihilation of the French Fleet at Aboukir Bay was complete, but for the escape of Admiral Villeneuve who would again confront his nemesis just seven years later at Trafalgar. Doubled by the British ships and ravaged by their relentless gunnery, the French faced utter defeat as the battle raged into the night. At the centre of the French line lay the massive three decker L Orient. The British Alexander positioned herself astern of L Orient and began to fire mercilessly into her fragile stern galleries. Within a short time, a terrible fire started that raged through her hull, eventually reaching her powder magazine, causing a massive explosion that literally blew L Orient to pieces. In this scene, shortly before the explosion, Alexander can be seen astern of the burning L Orient, minus her maintop, and trying to move away in the intense heat. To her port, the British Majestic is also starting to slip away while, in the foreground, the French Franklin is ablaze and threatened w.........

Invisible Enemy by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Invisible Enemy by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Perhaps among the bravest of those serving within the Regia Marina in WW2, the crews of the Italian SLCs (Siluro a Lavita Corsa, or Slow-Running Torpedoes) carried out some of the most daring submarine raids of the war. At 23ft in length and with a maximum speed of just 4 knots, the Maiali (or Pigs, as they were known, due to their lack of maneuverability) frequently delivered their 300kg warheads direct to their targets with devastating results, as when three Italian SLCs sank the British battleships HMS Valiant and HMS Queen Elizabeth as well as a tanker in Alexandria Harbour on 19th December 1941. Here an SLC has cut its way through the torpedo netting, just one of the many hazards encountered on these highly dangerous covert operations.

Thermopylae by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Thermopylae by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Often described as the most beautiful of all the clippers, the Aberdeen White Star Line's Thermopylae was Cutty Sark's only true rival, the pair often racing each other home to Great Britain from the Far East. She was unusual in that her design opted for slightly shorter masts, while the span of her yards was increased to compensate, her vast mainsail having a drop of 40ft, carried on a yard that was 80ft wide. Launched in 1868 at Aberdeen, her fate was a scandal, this wonderful ship being sold to the Portuguese government who employed her briefly as a training ship before she was callously torpedoed and sunk for target practice by the Portuguese navy in December 1907.

Tugging the Tiger

Tugging the Tiger's Tail by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

It is the Battle of Trafalgar, 21st October 1805 and the British 2nd rater Temeraire with 98 guns, having followed HMS Victory through the Franco-Spanish line, finds herself alongside the Spanish flagship, La Santisima Trinidad. This giant was by some measure the largest warship in the World, boasting four full gun decks and 130 guns. Undaunted, Captain Eliab Harvey took on the Santisima Trinidad, delivering a number of blows into the enemy’s massive red and black hull. However, Temeraire was largely out of control by this time, having taken much punishment as she had approached the enemy fleet. Her main topgallant mast had been shot away, as well as the mizzen topgallant. Her fore yard had crashed down onto her deck and her fore topsail had caught fire and been extinguished. Taking fire from both sides, the Temeraire lumbered on, eventually colliding with Le Redoutable, which was engaged with Victory. Between them, the two British three-deckers poured fire into the French ship unti.........

HMS Speedy - Cochranes Action Against the Gamo by Ivan Berryman (PC)

HMS Speedy - Cochranes Action Against the Gamo by Ivan Berryman (PC)

On 6 May 1801, HMS Speedy was cruising off the Spanish Coast when a large enemy frigate was sighted, a xebec-rigged vessel named Gamo, commanded by Don Francisco de Torres. Instead of evading the Spanish ship, which was carrying seven times the firepower of the tiny Speedy, Captain Thomas John Cochrane instead brought his ship so close to the Spanish frigate that the Spanish were unable to bring their guns to bear, whilst Speedy was able to fire repeatedly up through the Gamos hull and decks, de Torres being killed in the opening broadside. After repelling boarders, Cochrane despatched his entire crew, bar the ships doctor, to seize the Gamo and take her as a prize, tearing down the Spanish colours to convince her crew that she had struck and fallen to their tiny British opponent.
