The Sole Survivor of the Cabul Garrison, 1842 by Harry Payne. (PC)

The Sole Survivor of the Cabul Garrison, 1842 by Harry Payne. (PC)

Dr William Brydon, wounded, exhausted, and with a tiring steed beneath him, is the lone survivor of a force of around 16,000 soldiers and others who had been ousted from Cabul (modern day Kabul) in November 1842. Assured of a safe retreat through the freezing Khyber Pass in January 1843, the force was treacherously slaughtered over many days. Those who remained were killed or taken prisoner at a last stand at Gandamak, but a few had become separated, including Dr William Brydon. The last six survivors were set upon by villagers and killed, with the sole exception of Dr Brydon, who escaped to tell the horrific tale.

The Knights Wrath by Ivan Berryman (PC)

The Knights Wrath by Ivan Berryman (PC)

A Templar Knight of the medieval order best known today as the Knights Templar. Existing from the early 12th century for nearly two hundred years when they were disbanded by the Pope after members in France were arrested, tortured and murdered under the orders of King Philip IV, the order are closely linked to The Crusades and faded as an organistaion after the Holy Land was lost. King Philip IV was in deep financial debt to the order who had grown rapidly in wealth and made innovations in early banking and he used the end of the Crusades to successfully push for the disbandment of the order.

Assault on the Breach of San Sebastian by Mark Churms (PC)

Assault on the Breach of San Sebastian by Mark Churms (PC)

The Storming party, 750 volunteers, included 200 men of the Guards, one hundred each from the First and Coldstream Guards. They moved off at two in the morning on the 31st August 1813, and occupied a ruined convent where they remained till half past nine. Aware of the almost impossible task ahead of them, and subjected to a violent electric thunderstorm, the troops waited in a state of savage anticipation. Wild senseless laughter was said to have preceded the attack on the breach which could not be entered except in single file under heavy fire. The troops attacked in succession, but were struck down by hundreds. General Graham then ordered the artillery to fire over the heads of the assailants, clearing the ramparts. A shell ignited a quantity of powder, and under cover of the explosions, the storming party forced its way into the town. San Sebastian was savagely sacked and burned, and the good name of Wellingtons Army suffered as it had done at Badajoz. The civilians were raped, robb.........

The Battle of Loudon Hill 1296 by Mike Shaw. (PC)

The Battle of Loudon Hill 1296 by Mike Shaw. (PC)

In 1296 an English convoy escorting a shipment of looted gold was passing through the Irvine valley to the port of Ayr. It was led by an English Knight by the name of Fenwick, who in 1291 had killed the father of William Wallace, Sir Malcolm. Wallace, who was fighting a guerilla war on the English invaders, planned an attack at Loudon Hill where the road on which Fenwicks convoy was travelling had to pass through a steep gorge. Wallace had about fifty men and Fenwick close to one hundred and eighty. The Scots blocked the road with debris and attacked on foot. The English charged, but the Scots held firm. Fenwick armed with a spear, turned his horse in the direction of Wallace, who in turn felled Fenwicks horse with his claymore. The unhorsed Englishman was no match on the ground where he, along with one hundred of his convoy, met their deaths.

British Artillery Entering The Enemy Lines at Tel-El-Kebir by John Charlton (PC)

British Artillery Entering The Enemy Lines at Tel-El-Kebir by John Charlton (PC)

In 1879 the financial difficulties of Ismail Pasha, Khedive of Egypt, caused a Franco-British intervention, as a result of which Ismail was dethroned by the Sultan of Turkey and was succeeded by Tewfik Pasha, his son. In 1882 an Egyptian Nationalist uprising followed under Arabi Pasha, and ended up carrying out massacres of Europeans within Egypt. This led to a British bombardment and land assault. Sir Garnet Wolseley led the British forces that took part in the Battle of Tel-El-Kebir, which was ultimately won and led to the capture of Arabi Pasha. Historical book plate published in 1920.
