Crockett's Last Sunrise, at the Battle of the Alamo by Mark Churms (PC)

Crockett's Last Sunrise, at the Battle of the Alamo by Mark Churms (PC)

Crocket is shown at the Barricades at 6am on the 5th March 1836. The siege of the Alamo ended on March 6th, when the Mexican army attacked while the Alamo defenders were sleeping. The garrison defenders awakened, and the final fight began. One of the women who were gathered in the chapel witnessed Crockett running to his post, Crockett paused briefly in the chapel to pray. But when the Mexican soldiers breached the outer walls of the Alamo complex, most of Crocket and the defending Texians fell back to the barracks and the chapel area which had been the plan. Davy Crockett and his men were too far from the barracks to be able to take shelter and were the last remaining defenders within the mission to be in the open. The men desperatly defended the low wall in front of the church, using their rifles as clubs and using there knives in close combat as the Mexican troops were too close and made it impossible to reload their rifles. After a volley of fire and a charge with fixed ba.........

Tribute to the 95th Rifles by Chris Collingwood. (PC)

Tribute to the 95th Rifles by Chris Collingwood. (PC)

In August 1808 the 2nd battalion of the 95th Rifles were part of the expedition commanded by Sir Arthur Wellesley to Portugal and covered the landings at Mondego Bay. On 15th August during a skirmish at Obidos, they had the distinction of firing the first shots of the Peninsular War against the French. The Rifles were trained to think quickly and by themselves in dangerous situations, they were also taught to work and fight together in pairs while firing harassing and well aimed shots at the enemy. The Baker rifle which the 95th used was an accurate weapon for its day, with reported kills being taken up to 270 metres away. During the Peninsular War, Rifleman Thomas Plunkett of the 1st Battalion, 95th Rifles, shot the French General Auguste-Marie-Francois Colbert at a range that may have been even greater. Rifleman Thomas Plunkett then shot a second French officer who rode to the general's aid.

US 4th Division, Utah Beach, D-Day, 6th June 1944 by Jason Askew. (PC)

US 4th Division, Utah Beach, D-Day, 6th June 1944 by Jason Askew. (PC)

Utah beach was the great American success story of D-day. Compared to the difficulties encountered on Omaha beach, the casualties suffered by the American 4th Division on Utah beach were described as 'light'. Although tactical problems were encountered on the Utah beach landings, i.e. the loss of many of the landing control teams, the strong tide causing problems, German placed mines sinking vessels, and the overall atmosphere of fog / low visibility, the American infantry were able to subdue and overcome the German beach defences and penetrate inland, with much greater speed than the divisions that landed on Omaha. Terrain played a role with regard to the difference in combat experience between the two American beaches. The high bluffs at Omaha gave the German defenders a certain geographical advantage, whereas the low-lying sand dunes at Utah favored the mobility of the American infantry and armor. The low-lying terrain at Utah also favored the Allied air bombardment. .........

Battle of Antietam - September 17th 1862 by Louis Kurz. (PC)

Battle of Antietam - September 17th 1862 by Louis Kurz. (PC)

The Battle of Antietam, fought near Sharpsburg. Maryland was the bloodiest single-day battle in American history. It pitted Union General George B. McClellan against Confederate General Robert E. Lee and was marked by intense an brutal combat, with significant casualties on both sides, totalling around 22,000. Although neither side achieved a decisive victory, the battle halted Lee's invasion of the North and provided President Abraham Lincoln with the opportunity to issue the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation. The battle is often seen as a strategic Union victory for this reason.

Retreat from Moscow by Fraciszek Kostrzewski (PC)

Retreat from Moscow by Fraciszek Kostrzewski (PC)

Depicted here, a scene from Napoleon's retreat from Moscow after a failed invasion. The retreat led to further losses as many men starved, froze to dead or died from disease. The catastrophic failure would be a lasting scar on Napoleon's image of being an undefeatable persence in Europe and the mass casualties in his ranks would greatly reduce his Grande Armee's effectiveness.
