Clash of Steel, Prokhorovka, Kursk, 12th July 1943 by David Pentland (PC)

The battle for Prokhorovka marked the high water mark of the German southern drive for Kursk. At the apex of the thrust were the 14 tiger tanks of the 13 Heavy Tank Company, 1st SS Panzer Division Liebstandarte, led by Michael Wittman. Their advance was eventually thwarted, however, by the epic charge of the Soviet 29th Guards Tank Corps, as part of 5th Guards Tank Armys furious counter attack against the SS Tank Corps.

Escape to the Elbe, Berlin, 3rd May 1945 by David Pentland. (PC)

Following Hitlers death, the decision was taken by the officers and men of Sturmartillerie Brigade 249 to break out of the doomed capital. Shortly before midnight on the 3rd, what remained of the unit fought to the edge of the city at Spandau. By this time the brigade had been split into two elements, the first under Hauptmann Herbert Jaschke successfully punched their way out to the west. The second group was not so lucky, and its survivors fell into Soviet captivity.

The Great Folly of 1916 by Jason Askew. (PC)

The Great Folly of 1916 by Jason Askew. (PC)

Assault in the vicinity of Thiepval by the Ulster division-1st July 1916. The 11th Royal Irish Rifles, moving forward from the A line of trenches, and moving forward to attack the B line of trenches, the attacking infantry are preceded by Bombers - seen carryng grenades in green canvas buckets - who are engaged in throwing grenades in anticipation of the rifle company assault on the enemy trenches; an activity barely changed since the days of Marlborough. The rifle companies are armed with the Lee Enfield SMLE - a superb rifle, though expensive to make. The advance is made with bayonets fixed, as trench clearing involved numerous hand to hand confrontations and bayonet fights. The rifle companies are supported by two Lewis gun teams per company. Note that visible in the painting is a man carrying an orange painted steel marker, painted on one side only. The markers are to to indicate to British artillery observers as to the most forward positions taken by the British advance. N.........

Soviet Bt-7 tanks fend off a Stuka attack, Russia, June 1941. The Bt-7 model 1937 was an innovative design. With it’s Christie suspension, impressive speed, mobility, and a 45mm gun, it was a good tank for it’s time. Only supplanted by the even better T34.

Waterloo: The Chage of the Scots Greys by Stanley Wood (PC)

Under the command of the Earl of Uxbridge, the Scots Greys formed part of the third line of Wellingtons troops on the left flank. Pictured is The Scots Greys famous charge at the Battle of Waterloo. Due to uneven ground they were only able to canter towards the enemy however despite their reduced speed they still managed to wade through the French 45th Regiment. The Greys ultimately suffered heavy losses taking over 200 casualties and losing more than half of their horses. Image taken from original book plates published in 1915.

Battle of Tudela by January Suchodolski (PC)

Battle of Tudela by January Suchodolski (PC)

The Battle of Tudela, fought on November 23rd 1808, saw the French forces under Marshal Jean Lannes decisively defeat the Spanish armies led by General Castanos and General Palafox. Spanish casualties were significant, with around 6,000 killed or wounded. While French losses were relatively minimal, with only about 700 casualties. The aftermath of the battle forced the Spanish armies to retreat in two directions, with one contingent moving towards Zaragoza and the other towards Madrid. This victory allowed Napoleon to advance rapidly, culminating in the French capture of Madrid in early December 1808.

Jameson's Last Stand, Battle of Doornkop 2nd January 1896 by Richard Caton Woodville. (PC)

In 1895, Leander Starr Jameson assembled a private army outside the Transvaal with the aim of invading and overthrowing the Boer government. The idea had been to encourage civil unrest among foreign workers (Uitlanders), and use the outbreak of open revolt as an excuse to invade and take over the territory. But Jameson grew impatient and so launched the Jameson Raid on 29th December 1895, and managed to push within twenty miles of Johannesburg before superior Boer forces compelled him and his men to surrender at Doornkop on the 2nd of Janaury 1896.
