British Artillery Entering The Enemy Lines at Tel-El-Kebir by John Charlton (PC) In 1879 the financial difficulties of Ismail Pasha, Khedive of Egypt, caused a Franco-British intervention, as a result of which Ismail was dethroned by the Sultan of Turkey and was succeeded by Tewfik Pasha, his son. In 1882 an Egyptian Nationalist uprising followed under Arabi Pasha, and ended up carrying out massacres of Europeans within Egypt. This led to a British bombardment and land assault. Sir Garnet Wolseley led the British forces that took part in the Battle of Tel-El-Kebir, which was ultimately won and led to the capture of Arabi Pasha. Historical book plate published in 1920.
