Clipped Signature - Norman Rutter. Flying with the RAF in the 1920s he flew aircraft including the Avro 504 and Fairey Fox before joining No.12 Sqn and No.18 Sqn flying the Hart and flying the Wapiti with No.39 Sqn and No.60 Sqn. Trained as an engineer, he spent the entirety of World War Two in the Far East. Post war he served in the Air Ministry. He died in 1998. Air Vice Marshal Norman Rutter CB CBE (deceased) *Signature Value : £40	Text from c.1984 : Norman Rutter was born in Liverpool in 1909 and joined the Royal Air Force as a Halton apprentice in 1926. Three years later he won the Sir Charles Wakefield Scholarship and a cadetship to the RAF College at Cranwell. As a commissioned pilot he flew a variety of aircraft during the early to mid 1930s - Avro 504, Bristol Fighters, Atlas and Fairey Fox figured in his log book before joining No.12 and No.18 Squadrons flying the Hart and later in India with No.39 and No.60 Sqn he added the Wapiti to his repertoire. While at Cranwell he won the Aeronautical Engineering prize son in 1935 he decided to become an engineer specialist and entered the RAF Technical College at Henlow for a two year engineering course. In 1938 he went to Singapore at the start of what was to become seven years unbroken service in the Far East. He was in command of Mingaladon Airfield, Rangoon when Burma was invaded and Rangoon fell to the Japanese. He was given the task of finding a new land route into Burma and he pioneered a route by Jeep through hilly, thickly jungled territory from the port of Akyab. Ironically, the route was never used by the Allies though there is evidence that the Japanese later used it. From Burm Wing Commander Rutter moved to India with No.221 Group Calcutta and Air HQ Delhi. Promoted to Group Captain he was given command of the Maintenance Unit at Drigh Road, Karachi and finally returned to England to become DC Eng O (A) at Headquarters Bomber Command. Subsequently he served in the Air Ministry and as Senior Training Officer at Halton before a posting to the USA in 1951. At Patrick AFB in Florida he was the Senior RAF Liaison Officer with the US Air Force Missile Test Centre and during a 3 and a half year term he took part in negotiations with British Territorial Governors in the Caribbean which contributed greatly to the development and progress of the Cape Canaveral based missile test range. Returning to the UK in 1955 he was posted to the Ministry of Supply and directed the research and development programme of the V-bomber force. He attended the 1958 course at the Imperial Defence College and then, as an Air Commodore, returned after 25 years to become Commandant of the RAF Technical College, Henlow, the first of the College's former engineering students to do so. In 1961 he was promoted to Air Vice Marshal and became the Senior Technical Staff Officer at Headquarters Bomber Command. He retired from the Royal Air Force in 1965. end of text from c.1984 He died on 9th October 1998.
