Clipped Signature - Sir Dermot Boyle. Joined the RAF in the 1920s, flying Sopwith Snipes with No.17 Sqn then with No.1 and No.6 Sqn in Iraq. A cadet at Cranwell College, he ascended the ranks in a long career and was the first of their graduates to be appointed Chief of Air Staff in 1956. He flew his own Canberra bomber to tour his units in the Middle East at this time. Knighted in 1953, he retired in 1959 as Marshal of the Royal Air Force. He died in 1993. Marshal of the Royal Air Force Sir Dermot A Boyle GCB KCVO KBE AFC (deceased) *Signature Value : £40	Joining the RAF in the 1920s, he flew Sopwith Snipes with No.17 Sqn and with No.1 and No.6 Sqn in the Middle East. He died on 5th May 1993. The following text was written around 1983. Dermot Boyle was born at Durrow Abbeyliex, Eire on 2nd October 1904. He was educated at St Columba's College, Dublin and in September 1922 was awarded a cadetship at the Royal Air Force College, Cranwell. After 22 months training, on 31st July 1924, he was commissioned as a Pilot Officer in the Royal Air Force. He served with No.17 (Fighter) Squadron at Hawkinge before being posted to No.1 (Fighter) Squadron at Hinaidi, Iraq, some 17 months later. After serving with this squadron for 12 months, during which time he was promoted to Flying Officer, he was transferred to No.6 (Army Co-operation) Squadron, also at Hinaidi. In early 1927, he returned to England to undergo a Flying Instructors' Course at the Central Flying School, Cranwell. Upon completion of the course he became an Instructor at the school. He was a member of the 1928/29 CFS Aerobatic Team. He served for 2 years at the Central Flying School, with a 3 month detachment to No.601 (Bomber) Squadron, during which he was promoted to a Flight Lieutenant. After completing a further year as an Instructor, he was posted as Adjutant to No.601 (Bomber) Squadron, returning to Cranwell a year later to complete the Instrument Rating Course. A posting to India for Staff Duties followed this course and in late 1935 he returned to England to join No.14 Royal Air Force Staff College Course at Andover. In October 1936 he was promoted to Squadron Leader and upon completion of his Staff Course, was posted to join No.83 (Bomber) Squadron, then flying Hawker Hinds. He remained with this squadron for 6 months before being posted back to Cranwell as Chief Flying Instructor. The beginning of the Second World war saw Squadron Leader Boyle on the Headquarters staff of the Advanced Air Striking Force. He was promoted to Wing Commander in November 1939 and served both in England and France before returning in June 1940 to Headquarters Bomber Command on Air Staff Operations Duties. Six months later he was posted to No.83 (Bomber) Squadron, Scampton as Commanding Officer. He also served as the Commanding Offcier of No.11 Operational Training Unit, also at Scampton. During February 1941 he was appointed Assistant Secretary to the Committee of Imperial Defence and after serving 11 months, was promoted to Group Captain and posted to Royal Air Force Stradishall as Station Commander. Between May 1943 and April 1945 he was the Senior Air Staff Officer of No.6 (Bomber) Group and No.83 Group Second Tactical Air Force. He was promoted to Air Vice Marshal in April 1945 and became the Air Officer Commanding No.85 Group, Second Tactical Air Force. He servbed with this unti for just 3 months before taking up the appointment of Air Officer Commanding No.11 Group Fighter Command in July 1945. He attended the Imperial Defence College in 19467 and upon completion of the course became the Assistant Commandant of the Royal Air Force Staff College, Bracknell, before going to the Air Ministry to be Director Geneal (1) in July 1948 and Director General of Manning in July 1949. He stayed at the Air Ministry until April 1951 when he was appointed Air Officer Commanding No.1 Group, Bomber Command, Royal Air Force Bawtry. Upon taking up his appointment, he attended the RAF Flying College, Manby for a short Flying Refresher Course. On 25th September 1952 he flew a Canberra Bomber from RAF Binbrook to Malta and back in 6 hours 5 minutes, at an averga speed of 485 miles per hour for the 2,914 mile journey. Sir Dermot received his Knighthood in the New Years Honours List in 1953 and as Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief Fighter Command, was responsible for the Coronation Royal Review of the Royal Air Force which took place on 15th July 1953 at Royal Air Force Odiham, Hampshire. During this time he became President of the Royal Air Force Model Aircraft Association and the Royal Air Force Boxing Association. A year later he became President of the Royal Air Force Officers' Boxing Club. On 1st January 1956 Sir Dermot was promoted to Air Chief Marshal and appointed Chief of Air Staff, thus becoming the first flight cadet from the Royal Air Force College to do so. One of his first duties was to visit all his Units in the Middle East and Far East Air Forces, and for this tour he flew his own Canberra Bomber. He became a Marshal of the Royal Air Force on 1st January 1958 and again had the distinction of being the first Cranwell Graduate to achieve this rank. Prior to his retirement at the end of 1959, he received from the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths a presentation ceremonial sword which will be worn by all future Chief of Air Staff on parade - the blade being etched with the name of each succeeding Chief of Air Staff. Upon leaving the Royal Air Force Sir Dermot joined the Board of the British Aircraft Corporation and in 1965 was made master of the Guild of Air Pilots and Air Navigators. He was instrumental in the construction and building of the Royal Air Force Museum and was its first Chairman of the Board of Trustees from 19656. On 15th December 1975 he was honoured by the RAF Museum, who named the new exhibition wing after him.
