And a couple of DDs to screen the Strasbourg! DFO :D

I moved your pictures of Strasbourg and her escorts to this thread as the quality of the pictures were not good enough to be suitable for the Special Warship Picture thread.

The second destroyer has L`Adroit as a file name but is not a L`Adroit Class destroyer!

Apologies! Ship is the Epée, renamed L`Adroit 4/1941, Le Hardi Class. I should have taken notice of the full file name.

A nice pre-war view of her....DFO ;)

Nice photos - cheers

yes good pics

I always wondered about the main turrets on these ships, were the guns mounted in pairs, as the spacing would suggest, or mounted indvidually ? I don't think I've ever seen a diagram of the turrets. Bill

According to John Campbell, these were smaller versions of the 380mm gun fitted in the RICHELIEU and JEAN BART and worked on the same principle viz: "The guns were in two pairs with a 45mm bulkhead between them on the turret's centre line. Each gun was in a separate cradle but according to some descriptions the relative movements of the guns in a pair was limited, presumably by the elevating gear". Somewhat imprecise. Apparently the original drawings have not survived.

I don't know if this answers any questions concerning the main armament but the plans for Dunkrtque are available for download here: http://www.servicehistorique.sga.defense.gouv.fr/02fonds-collections/banquedocuments/planbato/planbato/fichebato/fichbato.php?id=156. Strasbourg plans are not listed.

A couple of additional pictures that might be of interest. Firstly a rather forlorn looking Strasbourg taken I assume in 1945. Secondly a picture showing the great ship at an unusual angle seldom used in photographs I have seen of her. Apologies for the quality but still worth a look IMO.
