HMS Dido 1896-1926

Posts 1 to 5

Im looking for information on HMS Dido. My grandfather served on her at the time of his marriage in 1915, but the photos on the net all seem to be a later 'Dido'.

Hi warren The page you are looking for is this one : http://www.battleships-cruisers.co.uk/eclipse_class.htm Here are a couple of photos of the earlier Dido too: HMS Dido, 1907 Officers of HMS Dido, c.1910. Surnames; back row from left: Wright, Egerton, Weller, Birch, Shore, Blake, Bateman, Lyon, De Pass, Boyd, Finnis, Mackay Front Row from left: Bradbury, Comdr Wrightson, Captn Sandeman, Eng Comdr Gastes, St Surg Jones. (this crew is probably a bit early for your grandfather in 1915, but worth a try nonetheless :))

I had a Great Uncle named Ernest Frank Neale who served on HMS Dido from 2 Nov 1913 to 10 October 1917. He was a Stoker 1 class, I wonder if they knew each other? If you managed to find any further information, could you possibly let me know. Many thanks Jill Webb

Jill/Warren - for your info, HMS Dido throughout the set of dates above was used as a depot ship for the following Flottilas: 1914 - Depot ship 3rd Submarine Flotilla, 1914 - Depot ship 3rd Destroyer Flotilla Harwich, 1915 - Depot ship 9th Destroyer Flotilla Harwich & 1918 -Depot ship 10th Destroyer Flotilla Harwich.

Thanks AIZictorini and other contributors. This period of Dido's history is of relevance to my grandfather's service: Dido (Louis) list 12 18/2, no.60. Leading Seaman. 3 October 1914-21 February 1915. I'd come across that excellent website on battle cruisers. A lot of information as well as photos of the ships and crews.

Everything we obtain for this site is shown on the site, we do not have any more photos, crew lists or further information on any of the ships.
