Harbour Steam Launch

Posts 1 to 7

Hi there everyone! I am the proud owner of an ex-Admiralty Harbour Launch (Steam) that has been converted for use as a liveaboard. Transmare was built in 1912 by the Rowhedge Ironworks and we (hubby and I) are seeking any information about our boat and any others of her type. I have found (I think!) seven other boats of her type with Transmare being the oldest and Puffin (HSL256) being the oldest still in original condition. As far as our research has revealed, Transmare's service number was either HL 174 or HL 175 (we cannot find the number for definite as her transom has been replaced). http://transmare.dragonflyriver.com is my website about her and I am in the process of updating it as I have been in touch with the previous owner to the person we bought the boat from. I also have tho contact information for the owner previous to them. Any photos/news/information about this type of boat would be much appreciated! Thank you Kathryn aka Boatbird

Welcome to the forum Kathryn. Good luck in your search --- there is several thousand years of accummulated knowledge with these guys and someone will come up with your answers. Dave H

Hi Kathryn We are in Westray, Orkney We have one of these HSLs. It is of a similar age but our transom has also gone so we do not have her RN number and therefore not her details. She has been up here in Orkney since the early 1960s and at that time came described as pre first world war. She was in Leith, near edinburgh before that. We assume she was sold off after the second war having been converted to diesel by the admiralty for use in WW2. Make contact please if you are still in the HSL scene. Best wishes William

Hi , I am the present owner of an admiralty HSL number 173 built at RowhedgeIronworks in Colchester. I am also trying to piece together the history. I believe my boat is the sister of Transmare. I know the thread is a few years old now but any information particularly the second world war years would be great. The only information I have managed to turn up is that the Albert Sloeman library in Essex have all the remaining records from Rowhedge Ironworks. My vessel was launched in October 1911 and has survived quite well being sold from admiralty in 1939 but being immediately requisitioned on the outbreak of was. I don't really know any more than that. Any help or direction would be most welcome.

Hello risingdamp1965 and a warm welcome. I have merged your post onto an existing thread on HSL's (Looks like you intended to post on that thread). I hope that someone can help you with your research and wish you the best of luck. Jim

Hi Jim, thankyou for your warm welcome and for tagging my post in with boatbird. It was her post that made me try and post here. Best wishes Steve
