Admiral Sir Peter White, GBE, Chief of Fleet Support, 1974-77

Posts 1 to 1

Admiral Sir Peter White; was born on January 25, 1919. He died on May 22, 2010, aged 91 The first of only two naval officers of the Supply and Secretariat specialisation to have reached the rank of full Admiral, Peter White had other “firsts” to his credit. He was the first supply officer to become a member of the Admiralty Board and the first non-seaman officer to be appointed Knight Grand Cross of an order (in his case that of the British Empire) while still serving. Until promotion to the substantive rank of Captain, his career was unusual in that most of the time for political reasons he served one and often two ranks above the substantive, wearing full captain’s uniform from the age of 29 and for 20 years, instead of the conventional nine. He became the “Ultra” working link between the C-in-C, the Admiralty and Bletchley Park and was one of a very small number of people to see at the time the remarkable effect that breaking the German codes had on the course of the war. In the latter stages of the war White returned to the Far East as secretary and naval assistant to Rear-Admiral “Daddy” Brind, commanding the Fourth Cruiser Squadron, British Pacific Fleet. He was present at the Japanese surrender on board the American battleship Missouri on September 2, 1945, and was sent to liberate a number of PoW camps in Japan. He was also with the first British team to visit Nagasaki after the atom bomb had been dropped. Encased in a lead suit, he described the scene as even more gruesome than Shanghai in 1938. He was rewarded by promotion to Rear-Admiral and appointed Director of Fleet Services in 1969. He remained in the Fleet Support field as Port Admiral, Rosyth, in the rank of Vice-admiral and finally Chief of Fleet Support as a full Admiral. A Supply officer who was at the heart of the rationalisation of the Royal Navy’s shore assets worldwide in the 1960s and 1970s White became heavily involved in industrial relations matters at the dockyards and with trade unions and politicians, and said there were many times when he had to act more like a civil servant or an industrialist than a naval officer. He was appointed MBE in 1944, CBE in 1960, KBE in 1976 and GBE in 1977. In 1947 he married Audrey Wallin, a wartime Wren officer, who died in 1991. He married Joan Davenport in 2007. She survives him, with the two sons by his first marriage. ____________ (I have highlighted some of the copied text in bold type) Copied; From Times Online June 3, 2010 Full Obituary article can be found here:- http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/comment/obituaries/article7142569.ece
