Concrete Aircraft Carriers

Posts 1 to 4

I can't see that these have been placed in this forum anywhere else: www.bobhenneman.info/china.htm then click on any of the "Concrete aircraft carriers" sites. Here is another one: http://www.google.com.au/#hl=en&source=hp&q=concrete+aircraft+carrier&rlz=1R2GPEA_en&aq=0&aqi=g1g-m1&aql=&oq=concrete+aircraft+carr&gs_rfai=&fp=253cf05ad45d55d9 Then click on the China smack site. What is going on here? Is it some sort of a cargo cult thing? Perhaps they are expecting alien carrier aircraft to land. Can we expect more to pop up?

Hi Sandy. The Chinese have done this a couple of times, with the ex Melbourne and the ex french Clemenceau.I dont know what they are up to.But for Concrete Aircraft Carriers, have a look at the thread,Aircraft Carriers that never made it in to commission.Especially the Pyecroft proposed Carriers. Many Regards Steve.

Steve I think you are referring to PYKRETE. Pykrete was a mixture of water and woodpulp which frozen together was stronger than plain ice. It was far slower to melt than normal ice and of course would never sink. The name and idea of this material came from a Geoffrey Pyke a British scientist who went on to devise a plan for creating a floating aircraft carrier which he first proposed during 1940 - called Project Habakkuk. Unfortunately his idea was after much experimentation found to be impractical because of the enormous production resources required and technical difficulties involved in constructing such a carrier and the idea was therefore abandoned by the begining of 1944. Anyway the carrier thread you referred to can be found at the link below: http://www.worldnavalships.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6055&highlight=PYKRETE .

There's very little out there on Pyke and Habakuk, so I made this film as a tribute to the man and his project. https://youtu.be/y7Ngv5nfG44
