Ship Photo Request Thread

Posts 1 to 50

Can anyone supply me with big scans/photo's of minesweepers of the RN ? Ton Class/Ham class/Ley class are my particular forte. Would be forever in your debt if you can. Rgds Rik

I had a quick look. Will this Ham class help Ton?

if you skim back through the older posts you will find several strings and pics of Tons... all best tim

I have decide to start a designated thread here for any requests for help in finding a Warship picture/photograph as these requests from members have turned up in virtually every section of the forum! Obviously if in a threadabout Tiger for example someone asks if they have a picture of her under the forth bridge then it could stay there. This thread is intended to be a place where members can post requests for single and/or multiple ship pictures and for that reason I have put it in the galleries section....

Hi, A friend has asked me if I can ID the ships in the photo below. Can anyone help please? Cheers Bruce

Nice picture Bruce. I have brought it down in size so that the experts can see them a little more clearly. Bob.

I think the pic shows HMS GAMBIA as part of the Med Fleet 1954, for the Queens Tour. On checking the GAMBIA website they mention a similar pic as Part of the 'Royal Review at Sea' off Cromarty in 1957.

There is a similar photo to this in Desmond Morris book "Cruisers". This depicts two Fiji Class and a Daring. The only ship named is GAMBIA and I wouldnt like to say which is which on the posted photo. The destroyer is a Daring but with no pennant number painted up to identify. Strange that as I cant think why it should be like that. Date is difficult but pre 60s as the Daring has not been converted to the MRS3 director for Fire Control. Regards Gerry

On the leading cruiser below the bridge and just behind B turret her badge is mounted. Its not too clear but it looks as though it might be similar to GAMBIA's i.e. an elephant superimposed on a palm tree. Am I right? regards Jan

Here are two more shots of her from the Cruiser book. In Spruso's original pic you can just make out the flags ready to be hoisted on the main mast.

This also looks similar vintage: Caption says cruiser Glasgow is about to take on First Sea Lord Sir Roderick McGrigor from HMS St Kitts in the Mediterranean. But the destroyer here not Daring Class of course.

Thanks All, I thought they might be taken at the same time as the photos on the Cruiser book but couldn't remember the names of the ships in that photo. I'll pass the info on, Cheers Bruce

Dug a bit more on the web and it seems that the photo is from the Royal Escort in the Med in May 1954. The photo is taken from HMS Glasgow and shows Gambia in the forground which would make the other cruiser Bermuda. Still can't ID the destroyer. Cheers Bruce

The destroyers involved in the steam past/demonstration were Daring, Diamond, Duchess and Decoy. As Daring still had a large encased funnel in 1954 that leaves just three possibilities. Sorry I can't narrow it down further at the moment! Steve

Thanks Steve

TERRY, Sorry I got `wrong' Thread - was not too sure where to put the request. Here's some more pictures that I require - if wrong place, then put it where you wish. BLAKE / FURY / MONS / WOOLWICH / NOMAD / SUNFISH - all WW1. Sadsac

Hi dennis a feary # 637 I can guarantee you no photo of Nomad exists. She was brand new when lost at Jutland. However I have a really quite accurate picture of her as drawn by a survivor in Brandenburg in 1917 & his memory seemed very good. It even includes her pendant number G31, but then he would have had plenty of time to reflect, no doubt.

CULVERIN, most interesting info & thanks for it. Any chance of posting the drawing of which you write ?? Be most interested to see it. From your posting that the drawing was done by `someone' in Brandenburg camp then it is possible that `my man' went there also. So, anyone any info on Brandenburg ?? As you can see I am quite willing `to thrash a willing horse' !!! Sadsac

Dennis - first of all I uploaded a great photo of Blake in Daves post #4 at the link below. http://www.worldnavalships.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6709&highlight=BLAKE

Here are pictures of Sunfish and Fury.
I can guarantee you no photo of Nomad exists. She was brand new when lost at Jutland.
For almost 40 years it had been thought that not a single photograph existed of the Japanese aircraft carrier Shinano, sunk in 1944 before she entered service. Then in 1982 the first photograph of Shinano to be published appeared in Shizuo Fukui's Japanese Naval Vessels Illustrated 1869-1945 Vol.3. Two more (admittedly poor quality) aerial photographs have also surfaced. So never say never! Come to think of it, a thread listing warships for which no photographs are known to exist would be fascinating. In addition to HMS Nomad, a number of Japanese WW2 built destroyers could be added.

No photo's ?? Ditto re HMS/m UMPIRE. I well remember dear Gus Britton at the submarine museum decrying the fact that there are no pics of UMPIRE. She was, of course, sunk in collision on her journey to `North' for further fitting out & trials. Started out from Chatham where she was built. Wonder if any pic have `surfaced' ??? RESURGAM Sadsac
No photo's ?? Ditto re HMS/m UMPIRE. ... Wonder if any pic have `surfaced' ???
Yes, according to the Historic Photographs Section of the National Maritime Museum:
UMPIRE 60.5 1940 Submarine (HMS) N23171 (4P) B May-Jul. 1941 At moorings off Chatham. Pendant N82.
Hi Gents, Can anyone tell me when and where this pic of HMS Prince of Wales was taken? Pardon the small size but it's all I have. (And on that note, if anyone has a larger one I'd love to see it! :)) TIA.

CAN YOU PLEASE SCAN A MUCH LARGER FILE SIZE... then we can see the camo design and overhead details..... could be any ocean right now...
CAN YOU PLEASE SCAN A MUCH LARGER FILE SIZE...
Suggest you REREAD my post. Don't mean to be rude but,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,do you think if I had a larger size I would be asking to see a bigger one myself?

Scapa Flow, late summer 1941.

It would be a great picture of the POW in a larger size Kevin - but sadly I have not seen that shot before. I have moved your posts to this new thread however and if anybody does have a larger copy of it they can post it here.

Hi friends .I looking for any photos, pictures ,drawings, plans to british landing crafts ships large, medium small.Anyone can help?

28 August 1941, Scapa Flow. One of a set. Others can be seen on pp 290 & 291 of the Raven and Roberts BB book.

I have been searching hi and lo through all these threads for soem decent pics of the great HERMES as she looked during the 1982 war...however, aside from the usual starboard bow, heavy weathered pic of her entering harbor triumphant, I would like to see some DIFFERENT views please, especially the port side, and a section detail of the large forward round ramp, and especially the island...all these for ship modeling purposes....so please if you can???

As requested.

Hi Rik.Some really good shots of the old "Happy H",some from very unusual angles.Thank you for posting them. Regards Steve.

Guys - we now have a thread for this type of photo request. I have transfered these posts there.

Hi All.A long shot I know, but does anyone have a picture of HMS/M CHURCHILL,taken at the 1977 fleet review. The one I am particularly after is a fairly close up shot with a Petty Officer on the casing looking towards the camera.I know it exists, because I used to have a copy, and it has appeared in a submarine book.Unfortunately I can not recall the title of the book, and my copy was destroyed in a house fire some time ago.The submarine museum do not have a copy and I have received no reply from the National Archives. Many thanks in hopeful anticipation. Regards Steve. PS The reason for asking is I'm the PO in the picture!!!

Re HERMES pics requested earlier...THANKYOU. These are looking good, please post them as you find them...looking for some port side FD views of the island area.... :0)

Why, Terry, I will have my list of 550 ships I would love to have photos of posted tomorrow!! ;) Seriously, you and the others that regularly post photos from what are obviously huge and painstakingly cataloged collections amaze me with the quantity and especially the quality of the photos you have collected. The fact that you actually SHARE them on line is even more amazing. Many would not, at least not without the exchange of silver. Bless all of you! Regards,

Hi Barry.Very good photographs.Despite all the ships I have served on,she is still in my heart as my favorite.Did not like it when they put the "Bump" on here nose. Many Regards Steve.
More of the Big "H"
excellent...thankyou again. That LAST one , port quarter slightly elevated, shows good angle. Her port side was very 'busy' with those landing craft stowages.. are those LCVPs??... and am still looking for a closer port side along the angle, showing anywhere from the elevator drop aft .... but these are far better than what we had before...thanks...
TERRY, Sorry I got `wrong' Thread - was not too sure where to put the request. Here's some more pictures that I require - if wrong place, then put it where you wish. Palco Here's a few photo's for you mate which i hope you'll find of some interest,I believe they are of LCT 107 (although i may be wrong) under construction at Swan Hunters on the Tyne 1940-41ish. Swan's built 4 LCT Mark2s in 1941 originally designated as TLC 35-38 but re-named LCT 105-106 and 107 Regards Dave
I have plenty of good pictures I took of BLAKE at sea in the 70s, but I suspect that may not be what you wanted?
Probably not as "your" Blake was not around during the First World War!! ;) However if you have any pictures of the last cruiser Blake that have not been posted in the forum then we would love to see `em. :)

A friend of mine in Spain is looking for a picture of HMS Antenor either as an AMC [preferably] and/or as a troopship.:confused: Whilst I have pictures of her as a pre-war liner I dont have any of her as a commissioned ship. Can anybody help as I know it would be greatly appreciated. :)

Hello all, looking for a photo of HMS ARDENT, lost WW1 Battle of Jutland. Any further info re the sinking etc. also welcomed. Sadsac
