Grand Admiral Von Tirpitz

Posts 1 to 6

Grand Admiral Von Tirpitz Died 7th March 1930 One of the greats of European navies in his time. He did much to increase and modernise the German navy. And, of course, If he hadn't been around, British Admirals wouldn't have been worried about a certain ship bearing his name in the 2nd World War being at sea!!!!! Dave

Nice one Dave, makes interesting reading, thanks.

Thanks Dave, to see what the great man looked like, click this:- http://images.google.co.uk/images?hl=en&source=hp&q=von+tirpitz&um=1&ie=UTF-8&ei=YKGOS5XREp720wSlzIXnDA&sa=X&oi=image_result_group&ct=title&resnum=4&ved=0CCQQsAQwAw

Born on March 19th 1849, Alfred Von Tirpitz is credited with transforming the Imperial German Navy into the High Seas Fleet by his building a large fleet of German battleships, the construction of which greatly exacerbated tensions with Great Britain in the years before World War I and materially contributed its outbreak. During the war however, the battleships predominantly remained in port in the face of the more powerful Royal Navy commanding the North Sea. Tirpitz, who was Navy Secretary in the German cabinet, responded by instigating and vigorously supporting unlimited submarine warfare against Allied shipping, a policy that, proved to be a public relations disaster. During World War II, the battleship named after him was sunk in a Norwegian fjord by British bombers and midget submarines. After his death, he was buried in Waldfriedhof, Munich, Bavaria, Germany. Sorry Bill, Didn't see your post before I submitted my pic of Tirpitz........

Thanks Dave I enjoyed reading that, we had so much in common with the Germans, and so little in common with the French and Russians. What a different country this might been if we had chosen the other side. No Nazi party, no USSR and no crippling war dept. Guz
