RN Frigates: River Class

Posts 1 to 24

Seeing the Castle Class thread has sprung back to life I went looking for a River Class thread but could not find one. So here are a few to get us started I hope:

Good pictures Dick, they look like hard working ships,Keep posting. Regards

Ok, here are 5 more - not quite such good quality I'm afraid.

..and 5 more. For personal reasons I would particularly like to find better photos of Helford.

I will look out a good selection of these later on but in the meantime a few taken quickly to add here.

Dick, thanks for starting off this new thread of River class, all the photo's shown so far look to be those taken from 'The River' which I think was a world ship society book, similar ones being 'The towns' The river class for some unknown reason are notoriously hard to find decent photo's of. Anyhow here's another fine shot of Hms Helford. Regards Alan

And these few as well.

I will post a few more and leave it until I get chance to check through the rest of the ones I have.

One of a selection of photo's I took of Ex-HMS Windrush in August 2008 on the beach at Querqueville near Cherbourg.

And finally four others.

Alan, TY particularly for that fine view of Helford. I was unaware of a WSS book. It is not on their current list. Presumably long out of print? A pity. Terry, TY for your additions, especially Fal, another of particular personal interest for geographical reasons. Rik, Does poor old Windrush still survive? If so what a pity she cannot be saved. Here is another angle of her amongst 4 others. Best wishes.

Most of the ones posted so far I have in my collection too so I've been hunting through to see if I have any different, here's a couple that haven't been shown as yet. Hms Moyola and Hms Deveron, the latter a particularly scarce one. Regards Alan
Windrush had been broken up in 2009 picture on the website http://windrush.perso.neuf.fr/sommaire.html
So very sad to see her go like this, after visiting her twice in the last few years .................

Thanks for the two pictures Alan - they are bigger and clearer examples than the ones I already had! :):) Very much appreciated.

A picture of the former Spey after being sold to Egypt and renamed Rashid. Apology for average quality.
A picture of the former Spey after being sold to Egypt and renamed Rashid. Apology for average quality.
Just joined the sight and came accross this photoghraph of HMS Spey. My late father Fredrick Shaw was an A/B on the Spey in November 1942 when she was attacked in , I think BOUGIE BAY by dive bombers . A piece of shrapnel broke his right leg. The irony is that my Dad kept the piece of shrapnel until my older brother swapped it for some marbles in about 1950. Thank's for publishing the photograph it revived a lot of good memories of a father and a friend. Stu Shaw.

Stu, welcome to the forum and thank you for telling us the story about your Dad, I hope we may get to hear more from you. Perhaps you might fill in your profile using the UserCP button at the top left of the page, you can also list your Dad's ships in there too. The more we get to know of him the more we maybe able to help you with, such as photo's, badges, all matter of info. Regards Alan
Thanks for the two pictures Alan - they are bigger and clearer examples than the ones I already had! :):) Very much appreciated.
Just found this thread and been admiring the pictures but does anyone know how to find sailing records of these ships? Particularly interested in HMS Tees launched 1943 scrapped 1955. Believe commisioned at Londonderry then attatched/or affilated to Philoctetes (destroyer depot ship)in UK and later at Sierra Leone, but no details of her operations in between.

hms mourne not many pics of her about my uncle survived her sinking

Hello, Referring to Post #11 by Dick on this thread and the attached photograph of HMS Lagan. I recently acquired a photograph (attached) which appears to be exactly the same but except in mine she wears her pennant number K259. Any idea how this could be? Could the first photograph be censored ? or could my photograph have been digitally edited? Regards Paul

Thanks Jim, That makes sense. Here are a few I have not seen on this thread or elsewhere, apologies if I am incorrect: HMS Nadder HMS Nith HMS Rother HMS / HMCS Monnow HMS / HMCS Nene Regards Paul
