Question about the AA Cruiser Colbert

Posts 1 to 15

I'm trying to find a place that has the stats on Colbert, but everyplace I have found has them in French (not surprisingly but still irritating) Any chance anybody has them in English? Thanks in advance.

Hi There. If it's the second crusier Colbert you are after, the details are on wikipedia unser French Warship Colbert. If it's the first one however. She was scuttled in Toulon in 1942,Salvaged by the Germans and considered for conversion to an Auxiluray Aircraft carrier.Never complete, but recaptured, semi-completed by the french an expended in Atomic bomb tests. Regards. Steve.

Hi, Scuttled at Pier 5 East Milhaud Toulon November 27, 1942 after the sabotage of the hull and artillery. The cruiser was burned, the Germans decide to demolition. In August 1943 the demolition works are stopped to try to refloat the hull to free the post. The wreckage was damaged during the bombings of 7 and March 11, 1944. Following damage, the salvage seems abandoned. But during the occupation, all the superstructure will be cut. Underwater Demolition completed in 1948 Regards René

Unfortunately Irish Yank has not come back to the forum yet to confirm exactly which Colbert he was referring to. I would have thought it probably was the earlier Colbert. This has always been one of my favourite pictures of her.

I have the same picture albeit in a larger size - it is a good shot probably taken at the same time as the one I posted.

Given the National colors on the turrets...most likely. Question is...pre WW2 for the Spanish Civil War or during the war? Did the French ships have that "striping" during WW2 before the Nazis invaded Vichy France?? DFO :)

Picture date 08-09-1941 :)

Hey guys thanks for the info. Sorry I havent been back around, work's a pain sometimes. I'm actually looking for info on the post war Colbert. C611 I think was her pennant number.
