Ship Breaking Yard: Malcolm Brechin

Posts 1 to 9

Can anyone shed any light on the history of Malcolm Brechin Ship Breakers ?? I am not sure if they operated from Granton or Grangemouth or what their period of operation was/is. Any help would be much appreciated- I have searched online but so far with no luck

Hi Aggyaggy.I have been frantically scouring a wonderful(Though painful to look at) series of books called "TO SAIL NO MORE" Edited by Ian Buxton & Ben warlow. In part 1 they mention an organiseation known as BISCO( British Iron & SteelCompany) to whom a Number of ships up for disposale were refered. They then appointed a yard to carry out the scrapping. There were about 20 yards appointed by them,so perhaps you could look up their name to ssist you in your searc.Good Luck. Steve.:)

Malcolm Brechin operated from the south west corner of West Harbour, Granton. That is all I can find I'm afraid . Best wishes Jan

aggyaggy Here is the Harbour History site with many internal links to companies operating there including MB's in 1955 etc http://www.grantonhistory.org/harbour/harbour.htm By the way I see you are on the same trail on another forum but make reference to the fact it ties in with your HM S/M Ursula research... PERHAPS THIS ADDITIONAL THREAD SHOULD BE MERGED WITH YOUR ORIGINAL ONE AND THE OTHERS ALREADY MERGED then we will all be able to see your research unfold!! (just a thought) Little h

Good point Harry. It saves having threads concerning the same subject scattered throughout the forum!

Thanks for the help everyone. I thought my thread might get merged- again! I even asked the question in a different subject heading- is this not allowed, because my query regarding Malcolm Brechin is actually with relevance to the scrapping of Steam Trawler GN37! Any chance my query can just be left where it was? If it is merged with a Submarine query, it might be missed by someone who has not interest at all in Submarines!

aggyaggy; Sorry; but this seemed perfectly clear when read on another forum!!! Posted: Sat Jan 02, 2010 10:09 am Im researching the WW2 Sub HMS/m Ursula. She was broken up by Brechin. Some say this was in Granton, others say Grangemouth. Does anyone know what happened to the ship breakers Malcolm Brechin, where it was, etc or anything to do with Ursula or her crew. Thanks very much and happy new year to all. [name and e-mail address omitted] aggyaggy Posts: 6 Joined: Jan 25, 2009 Little h

Yes my error, I didnt mention in that post that I am also looking into Steam Trawlers. Specifically, GN37 which was manned by my Wifes Great Grandfather. By coincidence, though by no means unusual, they were scrapped by the same firm.

Yes I saw ref to said trawler in my searches for you and noticed she appears with pics and history on more than one occasion at Granton dock 1930, 1952 and sometimes as the renamed Drumsheugh GN37.. Good luck with your research. Little h
