HMS Onslow

Posts 1 to 3

Hello eveyone i am trying to find information about my grandad Albert Harris who served on HMS Onslow and was involved in the The battle of Barents Sea convoy JW51B. i would be grateful for any help, guidance and info

My father served on HMS Onslow during WWll. Try www.wikipedia.org and enter HMS Onslow in Search window. You can also try www.naval-history.net and again enter HMS Onslow in search window. Both are interesting reading. Neither have a crew list.

My Father also served on HMS Onslow (Leading Stoker). Subsequently, I heard fro a contact in New Zealand who had been the Radio Operator and had written a book about his experiences. It's now out of print and currently with a relative. I will post more details when it is returned. Meanwhile, try this: The Road to Russia: Arctic Convoys 1942-45: Arctic Convoys 1942-1945 Kindle Edition I was also in touch with Cmdr Marchant's wife. You will recall that he took command of the ship when Capt Sherbrook was wounded. Cmdr Marchant took over the regular meetings of the 17th Flotilla well into the 1990s. She sent me a copy of the crews still in membership (although this goes back some 20yrs). Albert Harris (HMS Orwell) and RE Smith (HMS Opportune) were recorded as Members with their current addresses, at that time. The Battle Ensign from HMS Onslow and the story of the VC are displayed in the village church where Rear Admiral Sherbrook (later Sheriff of Nottingham)retired to - more information from me at: chriswatkin72(at)gmail.com. I also have the story of Lt Lewis King NZ (later Lt Cmdr NZ). There are one or two photos accessible on the internet. Quite moving to see one includes my father at Scapa Flow after the Battle of the North Cape (Dec 1942) being addressed by Admiral Burnett (I think). There were some excellent shots of HMS Onslow being involved in the rescue at Vaagso Bay (Norway - 1941?) shown on the BBC in 2004, but I haven't seen the programme since. Again very moving memories for me because Dad watched in just 30 mins before he breathed his last.
