WW1 Coastal Motor Boats

Posts 1 to 17

Hello everyone, I am hoping someone here might be able to help with the following -- I am looking for 'frame' diagrams of both the 40 foot Coastal Motor Boats and the 55 footers. I have plan and side elevation diagrams of both, but in order to do a model in card the frame diagrams are essential to help with the hull and deck curvature. I know the IWM Duxford have Augustus Agar VC's CMB 4 but I cannot get them to respond to any form of contact, especially from out 'ere in the colonies. I am hoping someone on this great forum just might have what I'm looking for or perhaps someone living near the museum might just have a tad better luck than I have had so far. Thankyou, Roger Pearson. Bendigo, Australia. "Roger's Little Ships" Modelling Allied Light Coastal Forces 1914-1945.

Roger, If the mine of information on this site fails to come up with an answer you could try http://www.rn-coastalforcesveterans.com/index.html Best of luck in your endeavor JB;)

Thanks John, The CFVA are essentially WW2 but I guess it could be worth a try. I'll wait until after Christmas to see if anyone here comes up with anything. Cheers, Roger.

Hello Roger, There are set of plans of a 55ft CMB available from Traplet Publications. They did give a set away in the April 2008 issue of "Marine Modelling" magazine as well but I am not sure if these are the same as the plans they sell. Links below to the magazine and the plans. Also a link to someone else making a 55ft CMB Model using these plans and a few photos of a model in the NMM. Thanks Danny,;) A great set of links. I tried the Aussie office of Traplet but I think they may already be on holidays, so I'll try again in the new year as the magazine looks to be the best option at this stage and the model photo's are beaut. Merry Christmas,:) Roger.

Well, I finally managed to get hold of Traplet here in OZ and obtained a great set of plans. Now, I am seeking photo's of the 55 foot boats from WW1 and those that saw service in 1919 during the Russian Civil War. I have checked out Gordon Smith's Naval History site and the WW1 at Sea website, but I am looking for any other photo's that might be around.

Have a look at these 2 pix Rodger they may be of use to you mate. I don't recall where they came from iv'e had them on the PC for years Regards Dave

The IWM Photograph archive does have photographs of both the 40 and 55ft I think. Drop them a line at photos@IWM.org.uk Because of the number of enquiries they get they may take a while to get back to you but should be able to help. Doc

In Agar's book. Baltic Episode, Conway Maritime Press, 1963, there are a few not very good qualtiyt pictures of the boats, but one good one looking down into the cockpit. I am glad to see CMB4 is still at Duxford, I had already posted a picture of my mother taken in the 70's, when it first went on display. Her step brother Sub. Lt.John Hampsheir was with Agar when they sank the Oleg. He was awarded the DSC.

A big thank you to all who have contributed to this thread thus far, I have had this photo of a CMB for years and never got round to finding out what it was all about, something else I've learned reading these posts. Anyhow here's the photo.... Regards Alan

Here are transverse sections for 40ft CMB. The whole set was published in "Model Shipwright 96", in June 1996.

Thankyou Gents, For your responses. Dave and Alan -- I have both photo's, but thankyou anyway, Doc -- I have tried on many occasions to contact the IWM, I have even tried ringing them, but I have never had a response to any e-mail I have sent, Terry -- your photo could be a 40 footer I think and Marek -- I know I asked about a 55 footer but the frame diagram you have posted is great, do you happen to have the rest of the article scanned? Again, gents please accept my thanks for your efforts so far. If others read this then some more piccies or info may come to light. The reason for all this is to design a card model down the track a fair bit as I have other projects 'on the go' at present, but I'm certainly interested in the WW1 boats as my signature block indicates.

[i.e.] 95A/95E/95ED ..

But, knowing pusser every time an amendment to something took place it was issued a modification number, so the prototype may have been 95A then each subsequent one with modification was renumbered...just a guess though. Regards Alan
