RN Frigates: Amazon Class (Type 21)

Posts 1 to 47

Retrospectively this post introduces a new gallery that is intended for large good quality photographs and pictures of Royal Navy Type 21 Frigates. Any photographs of a similar quality owned by our members are most welcome. Without wishing to appear pedantic as this is a recent class of RN frigate then there are many good examples available so please no small, mediocre or pictures taken from other internet sites.... [23/10/2011]

Hi, I wonder if anyone out there can help me please. I am on the lookout for detailed images specificaly of the deck and bulkhead area around the hanger on type 21 frigates, AMBUSCADE would be fantastic, however any others will will be very helpfull. Many thanks Gary

This is ACTIVE during her visit to Gdynia in June 1994. It seems that for reasons unknown I missed opportunity to take any on-board shots.

Marek T, fantastic shot thank you for posting. This will help no end, superb... Gary

Mate You've mostl likely been there but try the Type 21 Club - http://www.type21club.org.uk/ They've also got a social networking site (link on main page) and from there you can ask direct to ex-crewmembers Danny

Danny, thanks for the reply fella, I will give that a go. Gary

A big thank you to Marek T for his help, this is what makes this forum the best out there for images and help, thankyou. Gary

You're welcome, Gary. Here is ACTIVE entering Gdynia on 10 June 1994.

Gary, Here is a photo from 1978 a Torpedo Launch from HMS Avenger, found the photo yesterday whilst sorting through some old stuff, and decided to put it on, hope it's the right place

Also it was uploaded superbly in exactly the right place! ;);)

Thanks Terry, I can't remember the exact date that photo was taken, but it was some time in 1978, either in the Firth of Clyde during final contractors sea trials or shortly after acceptance en-route from the Clyde to Devonport where we commissioned in May 1978. I believe the senior rate to the right of the picture is OEA Phil Maidment, who was the OEA who looked after the Torpedo's on board at the time. The memory bank is now starting to fail somewhat. I will keep looking through the "old stuff", I tended to slip some photo's into books, to keep them flat, and from time to time come across photo's iv'e forgotten about.
Gary, Here is a photo from 1978 a Torpedo Launch from HMS Avenger, found the photo yesterday whilst sorting through some old stuff, and decided to put it on, hope it's the right place
Is that a Mk 32 torpedo tube mount or a RN design (STWS1)?

PLEASE folks, any MORE pictures of the assorted ships of this class....Dragon models has announced a 700 scale kit of these great little ships, would like to see some collections of these...yes anyone???

Ray - I have literally boxes of photographs of these ships which I bought at the start of the year as part of a van full of navy photos and slides!! The problem is the time it is taking me to get around to sorting out which box is which. I will get there but I cant promise when. :o Picture of Type 21 frigate Ambuscade with D108 Cardiff....

Very nice photos, Terry. Look forward to seeing some more when you have sorted them out Steve

Thanks guys - I will sort out all the boxes full I bought earlier this year but it will take me ages to do this - as I said it was a whole van full of slides and photos that I purchased back in January and I have barely begun to even look at most of them!! [although most are warships there are also boxes full of aircraft, helicopters and armoured vehicles as well!!] In the meantime I will continue posting some good ones that I already have.... :o F173 Arrow....
F170 Antelope....:)
These are terrific, all of them especially the look down ones where you can see the layout of the decks better. These did not have jet turbine engines back then did they, almost looks like they did with the sleeker funnels.... Thankyou all
F170 Antelope....:)
was this one the only one lost to enemy action 1982? Have I got the right one? God bless her crew....

Ardent and Antelope were both lost in 82.

Great Pics as ever, thanks.

Thanks guys - more to come when time permits! ;)

Donald, the availability of modern day photographic equipment means that these type of shots taken by modern day sailors will record them for history by the thousands, whereas us earlier sailors didn't have that luxury using what we had available to us, so much lost and unrecorded as and when it happened. Keep posting!! Jack.

Some more Pix from HMS Active 1985-1989 2. Loading a Chaff rocket into it`s launcher. 3. Looking aft towards the 4.5 inch gun, Exocet launchers and Bridge. 4. Active, alongside in Mombassa, Kenya, in 1987. 5. HMS Amazon during a Type 21 Families Day at sea in the English Channel. 6. Duty watch muster on the flight deck while alongside in Spain. 7. Families Day in the English Channel. 8. Frigate Alley in Devonport. 9. HMS Arrow, alongside in Guzz. 10. Rafted up, HMS Active & RFA Orangeleaf in the Gulf, 1987.

Very true, Jack, although I`m afraid I was quite prolific with my photography throughout all my naval years, so there is quite a bit more to come! regards, Donald.

The missing photograph! 1. An aerial shot of Active,..and my claim to fame,...unusual in that I personally am also taking a photograph of the 20mm gun crew on the starboard bridge wing Oerlikon Gun at the same time!!

More pix from HMS Active days, 1985-1989 1. HMS Active enters Guzz after completion of Armilla Patrol in 1987. 2. Handover day in the Persian Gulf; live missiles still loaded on their launcher. 3.
