RN Destroyers: Type 45

Posts 1 to 50

In order to really get this thread going what could be better than a superb set of photographs. Well as it happens a well respected senior member Mik43 took this fine set of Daring on the day prior to this years Plymouth Navy Days. Mik had a temporary problem uploading them so he asked if I could lend a hand so to speak. Well being an Antique Dealer I was able to lend my second hand - so here they are for your enjoyment!! Many thanks Mik - very much appreciated!

I have just realised that while we have a thread on HMS Daring and the Type 45 Destroyers in the RN Ships section we do not have a photogallery for them so I have decided to use Miks excellent photographs to start one... In the future if anybody gets any good photographs of these ships they can add them here.

Many thanks for your help Terry, greatly appreciated Mik

A few from me.... Cheers Steve

Thanks for those Steve - three great pictures.

Thanks Mik and Steve brilliant pictures of the HMS Daring. Lucky ships company I heard the living accommodation is excellent, a change from my time.:) Alan

I had a tour around Daring back in the summer....it really is a very spacious warship. Back to the photo's, here's Dauntless arriving this morning.

A couple more as they would not attach to my previous post...

Great series of pics of both vessels; I have identified some variations to the 'as delivered' fit and posted them on the Comms thread. Daring having been built in the Govan yard whilst Dauntless was built in the Scotstoun yard both BAE and on the Clyde. Little h

Hi, Little H has been fed some mis-information at some time, I work at BAE Systems and attended the Launch of HMS Daring which took place at Scotstoun. All other Type 45 launches has taken place at Govan, the ships are then brought down river to Scotstoun for fitting out and subsequent Sea Trials. I have posted photo's of Darings Launch under Launches and Construction a few weeks ago, here are two photo's I have of Darings first arrival in Portsmouth. RichyB

Here are some Photo's of Dauntless leaving Scotstoun Yard for Sea Trails, proceeding down river and on Sea Trials in the Firth of Clyde. RichyB

HMS Daring was launched at Scotstoun in February 2005 by the Duchess of Wessex. I have added a few more of the more interesting photo's of the launch. The calculations for the launch had to be spot on, otherwise there was a risk of damage to the car park for Braehead Shopping Centre. All subsequent launches are now taking place at Govan. The extra width of the River and angle of entry into the water make it a more suitable launch site than Scotstoun for larger vessels RichyB

Very interesting pictures Richy. Just one point should it not be 2006 rather than 2005?? ;)

I stand corrected Terry, Launch date was 1st February 2006, looks like my keyboard has developed an OPDEF (Operational Defect) Here are a few more photo's. The first is HMS Diamond proceeding on trials, the other two are HMS Dragon on trials in the Firth of Clyde, last December as seen by the snow on the surounding hills. RichyB

Mng Richy. Fantastic photographs, love the sunset shot, would like to see the motiff permanent, but now doubt pusser would not allow. Derek (Bunts)

Does anyone know whether there are now any plans to fully fit out the Type 45s with Harpoon and CIWS ? One would expect that with all the ships being decommissioned there should be ample supply of Harpoon launchers, Goalkeepers and Phalanx available ? Best of all, it won't cost a penny so Mr Cameron need not worry.... Better keep on hoping... E

Harpoon - not imminently. Goalkeeper - never, it is fitted into a ship, not bolt on. Phalanx - Yes, trials not yet conducted, bolt on.

Related to this the RN have just purchased upgrade kits for 36 Phalanx systems. http://www.defencetalk.com/uk-buys-mk-15-phalanx-ciws-upgrade-kits-33838/

Not great photographs I'm afraid - but snapped these yesterday whilst skulking around Gosport, and thought I would submit them anyway. Bad light and zoom don't work together too well. HMS Dauntless D33 HMS Dragon D35

A very impressive 'piece of equipment' and great Pics...Thanks for posting....Brian

I was speaking to the navigator of HMS Diamond when it came into Swansea towards the back end of last year. He said they are fitted for but not with Harpoon and it is only a cost option that they were not fitted,Icant figure out if you spend a billion pounds on a brand new ship you cant find the extra couple of million quid to fit an already well established weapon systemin to a anew ship ,especiallly as the weapon is a modular system and is already planned into the ship anyway and could be taken of perhaps aretired type 22 or 23 frigate .Thank God the belgrano has been sunk as the type 45 that has been deployed to the South Atlantic has nothing to defend itself against a surface to surface threat apart from sending one of our ever decreasing numbers of SSN,s todefend it.

DARING has been fitted with Phalanx. See: http://www.flickr.com/photos/grant359/5870029115

One small step forward.

while I agree with the fitting of phalanx this still does not solve the problem of a billion pounds worth of what I agree is a very fine clas of ships but very little any surface to surface capability apart from a 4.5 gun and you cant argue that it a lynx or merlin helicopter has ssm capability because they would both firing the sea skua ssm which has a very limited range well within the mk 8 4.5 in gun let alone any decent anti aircraft missile system.

Where do you get three ssns from? There are only six T boats left including ones in refit DED etc and 2 possibly three Asttute class (probably only one fully worked up) This isnt taken into account ones on normal patrols and delousing ssbns . When the Falklands war was on we had 11-12 ssns in service and even then Splendid had a quick turn around and went back down inside a month and this does not take into account ssk,s which we have absolutely none at all. I still think its an awful lot off eggs in a very expensive basket

I know they are currently developing "sea ceptor" which will replace the sea wolf defensive system but dont know if a new anti-ship missile is in the works? I agree that relaying solely on Lynx/Merlin helicopters isnt the answer. The type 45 will only carry about 3 - what happens if they all break down? I agree that its crazy that there is provision for Harpoon but its not actually fitted  Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it!

For small craft helo launched sea skua and the 4.5 gun would be more effective. For larger threat ships, we really would hope not to get that close (and leave the SSNs to deal with them first). For the few occasions where that does not apply, we can fit at short notice (because we have already done the for but not with bit) and save money if an until they are needed. Everyone would like to fit them permanently, but it is a fact of life that we would need to cut something else if we did.

Any 21st century destroyer has to be both sea and air defence capable, even more so bearing in mind the small numbers of escorts the RN has today.

While watching a video on YouTube , of a tour of our Type 45,s .It showed a exercising suite ......blimey ,is there not enough manual work on these ships for the crew to do ,i expect it just like every where else these days, EVERY one is just sat at computers, right through the day ,and while doing watches at sea..........So when you leave the royal navy , it,s like stepping into old shoes .when you get a job. cylla

Last night HMS Duncan became the first of her class to arrive on the River Tay as she visited her affiliated city for the first time. Despite Dundee Port Authority not allowing camera on the quayside here are 3 from this morning on a foggy morning on the Tay

Can I remind members that general posts regarding this class should be posted in the Ships and Crews section, and not in the Photo Gallery. I have moved the last six posts from this thread to that location http://www.worldnavalships.com/forums/showthread.php?p=10107363#post10107363 Jim
