Was`nt sure there is a section for this but I`ll leave it to the powers that be if they want to delete it or not but I thought when I took these pictures what a graceful ship this craft looked, lets see if anyone else agrees, She is HM.CUSTOMS CUTTER "SENTINEL" seen here on her visit to Silloth in Cumbria for the 150 years celebrations of the opening of the docks. We don`t get many visits of ship such as these so she caused quite a bit of interest, the only fault was that she was not open to visitors, I would have loved to see her engine room and see what makes her move .

Hi Dave, tks for pics. Had the opportunity to work with these guys whilst I was in the reserve, not onboard though. Derek (Bunts)

Dave, good pics; they always look fit for purpose to me! and good to look at. Little h

Nice Pictures, Dave Perhaps it would make an interesting thread where Ships go to ports which normally they wouldn't go to.

WHY OH WHY doesn't the MOD get a grip and seek out the procurement folk that seem to be able to get:- proper fit for purpose vessels for the Customs!!

The current HM Customs cutters are 'off-the-shelf' patrol vessels from I think a Dutch company who make a range of port vessels - tugs, launches etc. 'Staten', or something similar, comes into it somewhere, I know as I checked out one of their tugs on the 'net, but can't remember the whole lot!! I'll try and see if I can find out the details. Mik

Just received some info on the engineroom of the SENTINEL which might be of interest to the Engineers, She is powered by 2 Paxman Valenta V12 diesel engines with a seperately powered steerable water jet for slow speed propulsion and has a speed in excess of 25 knots-----if only I could have seen them ---Paxmans were my favourite engines.

Has anyone anymore pictures of the customs cutter, Tonclass put one up on site, have we anymore about?

Dave have a shufti look-see on the Stokers Talk Only thread post # 417 I dropped a link about Paxman engines history on there 2 days ago..!!! Little h

Dave, loads of HMCC pix but too late to post at the moment. Watch this space........

Custom's cutters are built by the Dutch firm 'Damen' and are from their 'Stan Patrol 4207' range. www.damen.nl shows the complete range of vessels they build, including frigates!! Mik

Some sort of cannon to shoot up the bad guys. Dave

It's a water cannon !! Much like the US fire boats have.

A ship came into Portsmouth Harbour to day which my son said had UK border patrol painted on it in black, and customs in white. It was too dark for him to see the name of it, but he said it had a small gun on the bow. Does anyone know what it's called. Kevin.

Dont know if of very much interest, but two pictures of HM Customs cutters from around 1935.

an interesting thread, nice looking small ships. The predecessor of the US Coast Guard was the US Revenue Cutter Service.

Another photo of Valiant, with new coat of paint and go faster stripes, berthed at Ramsgate 2009.

Thought I might contribute some of the spin-off from the results of my searching for the HMCC Vincent for another member. We call them the UK Border Agency:- http://www.bia.homeoffice.gov.uk/managingborders/borders/cutters/ and here is information given in the 'House' about the activities of said Agency and their vessels:- ------------------------------------ Borders: Patrol Craft Chris Grayling: To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many patrol boats of each type (a) HM Revenue and Customs and (b) the UK Border Agency have operated in each of the last 10 years; and for what purpose. [288545] Alan Johnson: HM Customs and Excise, HM Revenue and Customs and the UK Border Agency have operated five offshore patrol ships in the years stated. These are interdiction vessels, conducting intelligence-led operations. Chris Grayling: To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether the Royal Navy has taken on any (a) functions and (b) operations previously conducted by vessels of HM Revenue and Customs and the UK Border Agency. [288546] Alan Johnson: HM Customs and Excise, HM Revenue and Customs and the UK Border Agency have all operated offshore patrols and operations with other organisations, including the Royal Navy. The UK Border Agency’s maritime branch can call on the military for support and protection at a time of operational need. In the same way, maritime branch has supported the military during major operations and for boarding expertise. No direct transfer of roles has taken place. Chris Grayling: To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many vessels were (a) intercepted and (b) boarded by crew from vessels of HM Revenue and Customs and the UK Border Agency in UK territorial waters in each of the last 10 years. [288548] Alan Johnson: The combined number of interceptions and boardings of vessels made by HM Customs and Excise, HM Revenue and Customs, and the UK Border Agency in the last 10 years are as follows: Financial year Number of interceptions and boardings 1999-2000 514 2000-01 661 2001-02 716 2002-03 1,046 2003-04 1,170 2004-05 1,075 2005-06 1,240 2006-07 1,352 2007-08 1,472 2008-09 1,981 It is not possible to break these figures down further. #1 Valiant leaving her berth at Ramsgate last week. #2 Exiting harbour, with on the far shore the tents/marquees of the Open golf event at Royal St. George's at Sandwich. During live television coverage, this vessel chose to use the inshore route back to Ramsgate, in the full knowlege that the cameras would pick her up. Jack.

Not all Customs and Excise is shipborne, and I am not talking about airfields. 1935-1939 my uncle was Thames based customs, and was translated from ship to shore, serving at Hays Wharf; part of their job was to house, temporarily, confiscated contraband, until it could be passed over to other authorities, or otherwise disposed of, but their were difficulties in regard to livestock, - so my uncle ended up being the proud owner of three tortoises ................
Two shots of Valiant in 2008 - Portsmouth.
Yes, that thing on the foredeck certainly does n't appear substantial enough to fire a shell, except perhaps a seashell! Steve
