Was`nt sure there is a section for this but I`ll leave it to the powers that be if they want to delete it or not but I thought when I took these pictures what a graceful ship this craft looked, lets see if anyone else agrees, She is HM.CUSTOMS CUTTER "SENTINEL" seen here on her visit to Silloth in Cumbria for the 150 years celebrations of the opening of the docks. We don`t get many visits of ship such as these so she caused quite a bit of interest, the only fault was that she was not open to visitors, I would have loved to see her engine room and see what makes her move .

WHY OH WHY doesn't the MOD get a grip and seek out the procurement folk that seem to be able to get:- proper fit for purpose vessels for the Customs!!

The current HM Customs cutters are 'off-the-shelf' patrol vessels from I think a Dutch company who make a range of port vessels - tugs, launches etc. 'Staten', or something similar, comes into it somewhere, I know as I checked out one of their tugs on the 'net, but can't remember the whole lot!! I'll try and see if I can find out the details. Mik

Just received some info on the engineroom of the SENTINEL which might be of interest to the Engineers, She is powered by 2 Paxman Valenta V12 diesel engines with a seperately powered steerable water jet for slow speed propulsion and has a speed in excess of 25 knots-----if only I could have seen them ---Paxmans were my favourite engines.

Has anyone anymore pictures of the customs cutter, Tonclass put one up on site,have we anymore about?

Great pics of the your custom vessels Rumrat, I notice that they are all sporting some kind of gun under wraps for`d yet the SENTINEL was`nt armed unless they had a removable one or maybe we are a peaceable lot up here in the North!!!!;)

A ship came into Portsmouth Harbour to day which my son said had UK border patrol painted on it in black, and customs in white. It was too dark for him to see the name of it, but he said it had a small gun on the bow. Does anyone know what it's called. Kevin.

an interesting thread, nice looking small ships. The predecessor of the US Coast Guard was the US Revenue Cutter Service.

Thought I might contribute some of the spin-off from the results of my searching for the HMCC Vincent for another member. [288545] Alan Johnson: HM Customs and Excise, HM Revenue and Customs and the UK Border Agency have operated five offshore patrol ships in the years stated. These are interdiction vessels, conducting intelligence-led operations. Chris Grayling: To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether the Royal Navy has taken on any (a) functions and (b) operations previously conducted by vessels of HM Revenue and Customs and the UK Border Agency. #1 [I]Valiant[/I] leaving her berth at Ramsgate last week. #2 Exiting harbour, with on the far shore the tents/marquees of the Open golf event at Royal St. George's at Sandwich. During live television coverage, this vessel chose to use the inshore route back to Ramsgate, in the full knowlege that the cameras would pick her up. Jack.

[I]SENTINEL [/I]is a 34m Island Class cutter operated by the British Customs and Excise. Built by Vosper Thornycroft and launched in 1993 she has been designed to carry out a wide range of law enforcement duties. She is a modified version of an extremely successful Vosper Thornycroft design built under licence for the US Coastguard.

Australian Customs Bay Class eight ships were built by Austal Ships and were used for the design of the Armidale patrol boats of the RAN They are armed with 1 x 7.62 mm general purpose machine gun. Not all Customs and Excise is shipborne, and I am not talking about airfields. 1935-1939 my uncle was Thames based customs, and was translated from ship to shore, serving at Hays Wharf; part of their job was to house, temporarily, confiscated contraband, until it could be passed over to other authorities, or otherwise disposed of, but their were difficulties in regard to livestock, - so my uncle ended up being the proud owner of three tortoises ................
