Questions about Nimitz Class

Posts 1 to 17

Hi all. I am interested in the Nimitz carriers from a Modelling point of view. I am wondering how to find out how the Island looked on a particular carrier in a particular time period.Specifically the Abe Lincoln 2000-2001.I've ound 3 photo's so ar'but am looking for more. Also could someone tell me what this is called at the bottom of the fantail?? Thanx

Bun I don't know what is called but as these pictures show, it seems to be part of the lifting mechanism for the 'tailgate'. Hydraulic Rams perhaps? Regards...John

Hi John. It wasn't on the original Nimitz or i think Ike'but has now been retrofitted and is on all the Nimitz's now. Thanx again.

G'Day All The area you are looking at is where the stern hatch is. It is know as a Freo (Fremantle) Cage. In Fremantle, when the Nimitz class anchor off the port in an area called Gage Roads, the cage is where the pontoon is tied to, which allows the Liberty boats to come alongside. (See image) Before the Cage, getting onboard a anchored carrier usually involved a climb up a thirty foot set of stairs up from the pontoon to the aft Quarterdeck, and if that pontoon was in heavy seas, getting up that stairs was very tricky! The Cage was introduced in the early 1990's and is now standard on the Nimitz class. Battlestar

Battlestar, I've got a couple of queries for you?? Please see Post #2 pic #1.... there is a 'gasoline gig' (lets say) at that very Freemantle Cage do I guess that they are getting on and off ok without a pontoon??? I also think I see an 'opening' inboard and behind the cage as well as the ladder to the port side of it. Little h

Harry, The cages, or bumpers as I call them, went through several iterations before they seem to have been standardized now. There is a platform inside on the bottom, between the outer cage and the hull, with vertical ladders on the sides. There is also a full man size hatch in the center of the stern with a small stair up to it. Boats or barges can tie up to the bumper. See attached close up of Eisenhowers arrangement.

Thanx for all replies. :)

hey up folks, Still on Post #2 Pic#1... My impression is that this ship is not fully kitted out yet:confused: there appears to be a shed full of aft arc defense equipment missing (or not yet installed lets say). Compare this pic with the other two in the post and there are a lot of protruding platforms "void" of usefull equipment???!!! Little h

Ike has everything she was supposed to have at that time(out of her most recent refit), except maybe a dome on the very aft platform extension. Notice it's a more recent pic than the other 2. CIWS has been removed and RAM added. Also remember, Ike was the second Nimitz, the others have been built in the 20-25 years since, so have changes and additions that IKE won't have. Also remember, that they go through several refits during their lives and the Navy changes their requirements along the way. To answer the specific platforms, on the lower port is a walkway, upper port corner Sea Sparrow and then a target illuminator. Moving around the aft end, the main stern platform used for jet engine testing and other outdoor mtce and embarkation/debarkation and it also has a small dome(probably Commercial satellite phone). To stbd, a platform with a 50 cal on it and an arm rig that I'm not sure what it's for. Then a new extending platform that on the Nimitz has a dome, then on the stbd qtr is the RAM, which replaced the CIWS and another target illuminator. Have I missed any? I've seen at least 6 Nimitz carriers up close and they were all configured differently. Here is a pic of her aft end before her recent refit. I took it at Norfolk in 2004 while they were preparing her for transfer to Newport News for her Refuel overhaul. She still has CIWS then. The RCOH is about 3 years long. The next pic is a few months after she came out of that overhaul in Oct 2008. CIWS gone and RAM added. HTH's, Darren

G'Day All Ah, I made it to post three hundred! I'm shocked it took this long! Bloody Work!
Battlestar, I've got a couple of queries for you?? Little h
Yes, there is a access area so boats can come alongside it, but the big civilian liberty ferrys that are used in such ports as Nice and Fremantle cannot do so. When the ship is at a port for liberty, USN policy is simple, get the crew not on duty off the boat fast and in numbers, and in some comfort. Thats where the pontoons come in, as they can handle at least two ferries at a time. With the possible chance within a few weeks of touring a Nimitz class carrier, I will make the effort to take photos of the Fremantle cage being used. As for Weapons fittout. All the Nimitz class are undergoing a major refuelling/refit (USS Carl Vinson CVN-70 is in the Newport News Shipyard now) where they will get the weapons that the newest of the class has. bunraku, There is site on the web that deals with Models of the nature you asking about. www.http://modelwarships.com You register for free, and once logged in you fine many threads on carriers for idea's. Hope this helps. Regards Charles

Many thanks Admhawk and battlestar and congrats on the 300!!! Yes I understand the sequence of refits and void platforms and your responses help greatly... must admit the proper fit appears quite potent. Little h

Hi Anyone know where i can find specific pictures of Abe Lincoln circa 2000-2001deployment? Thanx

Hi, I've got about 150 pics of the the Lincoln from early days till her retirement, I also have a few bridge shots of the Nimitz before her face lift. I will sort through them and see what I can find, it's 0:45 here at the moment so I will have a look tomorrow and post a few. Hump

Ok I've found a couple of good Island shots of the Nimitz, not sure if they are pre 1998 or after. Hope they help. I will go through my Lincoln folder today mate. Hump

guys, I had a cousin who serviced on a Nimitz class carrier: USS Theodore Roosevelt.. He was with her Eight years and this is off the thread i started on her: as she know to her crew and me as TR, well I found out what he did, and here it is.. IF any of you have any questions about it you can ask me and if I dont know the answer I'll ask him ok. What Chis did was build bombs and Missiles, He worked as a firefighter and also on the Damage Control center, Ships Protective Augmentation force, and Shore Patrols.. He is also part keel/plank owner.. he was with her when she was being built, which is cool.. He was on her for about 8-years and got out before she went in to the first gulf war in 1990.. My cousin, Chris, actually came to Tr in Aug. of 86, TR was commissioned in Oct. of 86.. So if you guys have any questions, if i don't know i can ask him ok.. let me know what you thing ok.. Nikki
