TS Lord Nelson - Patrol/Gun boats still in 'service'

Posts 1 to 27

Couldn't in all fairness place this anywhere other than on this Forum. But, when in an East Anglian City not long ago I felt it necessary to take a couple of pics of the local Sea Cadets vessel. Apparently it was a Swedish gun boat and their sixth vessel (according to their web site) which is in current use (presumeably as HQ). Absolutely Great; and all credit to both the City fathers and the Cadets at being allowed to actively use a waterborne vessel, albeit moored by/opposite the railway station, which after all puts it/them, very much in the public eye. h Thanks for those photos. The Norwich Sea cadets have had a vessel on that berth for many years. I remember a fine MTB berthed there in the 50s and passed it on my way to Carrow Road to watch Third Division South football !! Sad to see the level of security that is now needed to keep out the unwanted!! I seem to remember their vessel was just tied up unmanned in the 1950s. Things move on . Regards gerry

Gerry, Yep I'm afraid your observations re the level of security are saddening!! On another note, I have since wondered if those whip aerials are connected? and in working order. Wouldn't it be nice to know that in spite of what we have observed of the security necessities the cadets were 'LIVE' and in touch by real live radio. Also wondered what the life of this former Swedish gunboat was! and WHY wasn't a Brave or Gay vessel given from the RN!! Little h

This is what i found whilst doing my research, this is our unit, it is indeed an ex Swedish gun boat so we were told and it was called the VALE. However i have not been able to find out much more as of yet, if any one can throw any light on to it i would be grateful, as i am trying to put together a history of it for our cadets. You are indeed right about the security we have to have this due to the close proximity to the night clubs, and to keep local fisherman off.

Mikem, thanks for coming in on this thread and welcome to the Forum... there is every likelyhood that an answer about your vessels history will be forthcoming, lets hope so anyway so hang in there mate. Since this your unit can you answer the question re the aerials/radio fit and if there is indeed anything connected to the whip aerials please:) My congrats to your unit members for the presentation of your vessel especially since it is in the FULL public glare... its a credit to the organisers and the lads and lasses of the unit... as we say in the RN Bravo Zulu to you all you deserve it. Little h

Thank You for that they have all worked hard and are still doing so and enjoying every moment, but in answer to your question sadly the whips are not connected to anything, we had to rip out all the bridge to make room for a class room, unfortunately the bunks and sea going doors are all that remain of the original features, if we had kept it original we would only have had space for around 20 cadets, we have currently around 40 mike.

Hello as i said yesterday i am new to this site and i am a member of the sea cadets, in 2012 we will be celebrating our 100 years of having a unit in Norwich. If there is anyone on these forums or anyone who know of anyone please let me know, we are hoping to have a big parade and various other things going on, i will let you know more as it progress, but please let me know of anyone because we want to involve as many old ship mates as possible and show Norwich what it has turned out over the years thanks mikem. I think i may have put this in wrong section apologies if i have still navigating and getting use to site.

A fellow ship mate of mine have come up with some more information, apparently the ship was owned by the Swedish navy, her name was the "vale" and number was p155. If there is any one on the forums who know of her or indeed have served on her, i would be interested to find out more and be able to pass this on to our cadets, and also if any of the crew are still around perhaps they would like to see her now mikem.

Nice one mikem... always good to give the forum members something to go at I've noticed ... so having a name and number might just do the trick for you. Little h

mikem, I think I may have some of the info off the net... try HUGIN class (fast attack craft - missile) - (PCFG) it can be found on Google Swedish Naval Vessels by punching in the ships name and No. Quite a piece of kit by the looks of things but no pic (you have the real thing anyway I know) but it would be nice if someone can retrieve a pic for you. I must admit i prefer the gun being on the front and all the radar equipment in situe, but unfortunately we could not keep these. It is difficult finding out much, its not as easy as it would be with a royal navy vessel, but i will continue my quest.

Hi its been a while since i have been on this site, but thought i would up date you all with the progress of the 100 year celebrations being held at norwich unit in 2012. Things are going well we are contacting many people who have been a part of the unit over the years and inviting them to our parade and bunn fight, one thing we are doing is we have set ourselfs a challenge of finding up to a thousand, ex staff cadets and supporters of our unit, and this is going rather well, we have set up a page on facebook for people to join, but if there is anyone out there whom has been a part of our unit and whom do not have facebook and would like to be included please contact me through the ship forums. will up date more as and when i get it thanks mikem.

Just spent a weekend at the Premier Inn in Norwich City Center and this ex warship was moored outside the hotel. It is obviously used by Sea Cadets but does anybody know its history? Does not look like any ex RN craft that i would recognise. Any ideas?

Ex- HMS Vale (Swedish). http://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Vale_(P155) You will have to translate it.

Will this help? I wonder.

Think this is Swedish?? Anbody got any more info?

There are two threads about this vessel on the Forum. I attached a couple of pics taken on the occasion of one of my visits to the City. The TS CPO is also a Forum member. The vessel is indeed ex Swedish the Vale. Little h

Tony, I have no objection to the threads being merged if you so wish mate. Little h

All three threads on same subject merged into one Jim
