Check your PM's WD.

there is a very good series of books called "To Sail No More", packed with pictures of ships awating disposal and being scrapped web site www.navybooks.com regards

HMS Bermuda having part of her mast removed so she could get under the road bridge at Briton Ferry, Glamorgan. I used to live a couple of miles from there.

This picture is ARK ROYAL on her way to the breakers yard. The photo was taken on 24th. Sept. 1980 by a RAF Hunter , I don't think any copyright is involved.

H.M.S. Glasgow at Leyal Shipbreakers yard in Turkey from the Evening News, yesterday, regards, Bob

thanks bob thats actually my article...did not know when they were going to put it in

with regards to warship disposal, it is in my local library, but I also believe that you can buy them through NAVY NEWS, cost in the region of about £5 a throw yours SLINGERSPARKS

Hi Warshipdisposal, Only too pleased to help, regards, Bob

splendid picture of Bermuda, i well remember her in the reserve fleet at portsmouth when learning to sail as a lad. Note the forest of factory chimneys behind her, now thats a real lost memory! tim

Sad to see the end of my old ship "Glasgow". But VMT for posting. Jan

Tim, Those chimney's are mostly steel works and iron foundry works. they used to unload pig iron and ore at the quay where Bermuda is.

HMS Ajax courtesy of Batstiger. Regards...John

In the old ads from Janes FS from 1950 I posted there are pics of Nelson, Rodney and others in their final berths...mind you, in 1950, the UK was dsperate for steel and this was real swords to ploughshares stuff..

taken at southampton are these two leanders, having left portsmouth bound for the breakers the tug one joseph brown broke down....the RN s policy is that once a disposed ship leaves the harbour it is not allowed back which is why they ended up at southampton......interestingly they were both being towed side by side.......one is charybdis will need to do some research on the other
Attachments :

It might help with the identification if you could say when the picture was taken? Great picture BTW!

They are both Sea Wolf Leanders. There were only five ships converted to this role. You say that one is the "Cherry B" so the other is either Andromeda, Hermione, Scylla or my last ship, Jupiter. Best Jan

The two vessels were Hermione and Jupiter. They left UK in November 1997, towed by the ex-RMAS tug Rollicker bound for India - a journey that was to take them seven months, finally arriving in India in May 1998!

Here's the catalogue of events that befell the 2 frigates and JOSEPH BROWN. Regards Dave

upon closer examination of more pics they turn out to be hermione and jupiter

Very sad sights of Ark and Eagle old ships

some more from me...shows devonshire up the trot whilst waiting to be used as a target for sea eagle and tigerfish and birmingham astern of scylla, birmingham was towed to a spanish breakers near santander some 9 years ago and scylla of course was eventually towed to devonport...stripped out of anything that would contaminate the water and sunk as a dive wreck

These pics are great! I don't often see British warships laid up. More !!!:D:)

todays offering ...tasken at pounds this unknown ton class any ideas chaps
Attachments :

I'd say SHERATON she and BRINTON went to Pounds Bros for breaking together in the early 90s Regards Dave

Come on Rik, don't let us down! Bob.

A few more various pix. Dave

Dave surely there must be a date mix up over the two pictures of Volage?

Yeah i noticed that when i posted them don't know for sure which is correct through i would hazard a guess at 1972 being the date for the most complete dismantling as i remember her lying up the trot in the early 70s waiting to go for scrap. Shame nobodys puts dates and places on the backs of photo's it would make life so much easier. Regards Dave

I found these pics, and my curiosity went off the charts! Can anyone tell me about and/or provide pictures from a)Pounds scrapyard, and b)HMS P-556 ex S-29? I can't believe she lasted into the 1980's just sitting in a scrapyard! The last two are HMS Artemis and HMS Oracle, Opossum, and Opportune also at pounds........
Attachments :

Hi Kreig this is I believe another one of P556 taken around the same time.
Attachments :

Thanks! I just can't believe it, that was the last S boat on the planet! I'm sorry if any of these next pics have been posted before. HMS Nelson HMS Warspite HMS P-556 HMS Iron Duke HMS Rorqual Conning Tower of HMS Statesman

Krieg, If you look in the photo gallery on submarines you'll find dozens of excellent photo's of dozens of diferent boats laid up and being scrapped. the shot of ORACLE OPPOSSUM and OPPORTUNE was taken in Portsmouth dockyard not at Pounds bros. Attached are a few ariel photo's of Pounds Bros yard . Regards Dave

I'm sure i have posted some of these photographs elsewhere on this site before, They are of the Ham class Minesweeper PAGHAM Taken at Drumore on the west coast of Scotland in 2005 and 2006. In 2005 PAGHAM was bought by a local man for peanuts who throught he could make a fast buck by selling her on e-bay for £85,000 Not suprisingly he had no takers not at that price anyway in the spring of 2006 she broke her moorings and ended up broadside across the old slipway then the locals systematically stripped her of anything worth having hence the state she's in in the summer of 2006.As far as i know she's still there dispite a threat by the guy who owns her to set fire to whats left. It's great shame that this was allowed to happen because when PAGHAM first arrived at Drumore she was the last example of a Ham class in original condition complete with open bridge and all the deck gear . Regards Dave

Another sad tale of a Ex RN Ham class minesweeper ending up on the scrap heap. Laid down and launched as HMS POWDERHAM by J S White of Cowes in 1958 In 1964 she was selected to be converted into a coastal survey vessel and re-named WATERWITCH Serving in the RN until decommissioning in 1985. January 1986 she was sold to Pound Bros for £30,000. she ended in the Tyne at North Shields in 1997 to be converted into a training vessel for under priviliged children unfortunately the charity that had been set up to run the project ran into financial dificulties and ceased trading in 2002, WATERWITCH lay in the marina at North Shileds until the summer of 2006 when she went to a local breakers yard for scrapping work was completed by the end of July 2006 . Regards Dave

HMS Intrepid in Liverpool, as we speak, being broken up. HMS Fearless is in Belgium undergoing the same fate.

A selection of warships awaiting/undergoing their fate... 1.The underused Howe at Wards sometime during November 1958. 2.Campania awaiting her fate. 3.The Duke of York at Faslane during Febuary 1958. 4.Showing the stern of Lion during 1924. 5.End of Melpomene taken sometime during 1906. 6.Orion followed by Erin. 7.Warspite at Spithead-1946. 8.Konig Albert originally scuttled at Scapa Flow during 1919 under the scrappers torch at Rosyth during 1936...

great pictures there, bringing back lots of memories. Jupiter was my first ship had a great 18 months on her including her last deployment to the falklands and back via the carribean to then pay her off. There were rumours that she would be sold on so on the way back we were cleaning and painting so she looked her best but instead she spent years laid up in fareham creek before she went to india.

thanks all really enjoyed looking at those pics

It is heartbreaking to see the many pictures of my old ships, and those that I knew, at the end of their useful lives. But what wonderful memories they evoke of times long past. Hats off to you guys that can work cameras. Please don't stop posting! best Jan

promise im not getting at you jan ill try to steer clear of your old tubs....mind you my claim to fame when anyone asks is that they all sank or are not around anymore....my name is not jinks either:confused:
