HMS Hood: Battle Flag Details and Close up Gun Pictures Wanted

Posts 1 to 16

Hi guys Can anyone direct me to; a) the battle ensign and associated flags flown by HMS Hood circa 1930/31? and the dimensions... b) some really good close up pictures of both 5.5in guns and quad pom poms (both as used on HMS Hood- same period). I want to get them as accurate as I can and while a certain amount of artistic licence can be used, at 1/35 scale, people WILL see them.:)

MartinH-K, Here some photo's to start off with. Hope this helps. Regards Charles

Martin You might find some useful info here..... Great start guys and thanks.:) I REALLY do need to at least know the dimensions of a battle ensign that might have been flown by a ship such as Hood... anyone?

I found a really useful site that gave me the general dimensions of the white ensign but not what general size would have been appropriate for a battlecruiser. Can anyone give me an 'educated guess'?

Hi Martin. White Ensigns are sized in what is called a breadth, depending on the type of ship, the number of breadths, ie small ships sweepers etc., would wear a four bdth weekdays and perhaps a six on sundays and special days. Destroyers wear 8 bdth weekdays and a ten sundays etc. cruisers, carriers battleships would go up in bdths. accordingly. Difficult to say what size the battle ensign would be, but for a battle wagon I would have thought it might have possibly been sixteen bdth. Or the largest available onboard at the time. Hope this makes sense and is some help. Derek

Derek... that really does help. I have to hand stitch one together... no ,two or three of different sizes so I appreciate it.;)

Hi Martin. Re the Mighty Hood - as a Model Boat builder I applaud your determination on this one. You are right the Pompey Boys are Lunatics but they always put on a good show at the Weymouth Model Boats Festival every year with a different theme each time. Last year was Galleons and turn of the Century Battlewagons. Back to Flags - Give Pompey a Call being Dockies and Ex they should know the answer, or, alternatively log onto the Hood Association Website and I believe they have all the info on the old lady. As a Comms I perhaps should be more help but I was only a Key Tapper. Good Luck and Regards Dave:)

All I need now is... how big overall in fett and inches... or even metres.:o
