French Battleship Pictures!

Posts 1 to 30

Hello! I've been fruitlessly looking for clear, non-tiny pics of French dreadnought battleships, especially pictures of them post war(Paris and Lorraine top the list). Any help would be very much appreciated!

K I have been looking for the same thing myself for a while as I intended getting photos to compliment these WWI Delandre Labels. I know they are an artistic impression but it shows them as being handsome ships. I will follow your hunt with interest. Regards Gerry

K Just wait for a mo, I'm sure that Terry - Astraltrader - owner of photos/postcards supremo, will come up with something for you. If not I will be VERY surprised!! Mik

My modest contribution waiting a "probable" ? "counter attack:D of "astraltrader" ;)

Gerry part of the problem for you is that many of the ships you are looking for there are in fact cruisers and not battleships. Anyway without having immediate access to either my other computer or my external hard-drive here are some of the ships you are looking for... Firstly Marseillais and Leon Gambetta [both cruisers].

Here are some of the Battleships you asked for: Lorraine, Paris and Patrie... I will track down the other ships you are looking for when I get more time!

Terry Thanks for that. The sheet I posted had been scanned on to A4 and I didnt want to dig out the single labels. Anything you have will be welcome although I should warn you there are another TWO sheets like that!!!! You can`t keep a good hoarder down !!! Regards gerry

A pleasure Gerry. When you get around to it you are more than welcome to send me a PM with all the ships on it you are looking for together with your email a/d and I will gladly email you with some pictures...

Thanks for the help, everyone! I've had a really hard time finding pictures of French Dreadnoughts, especially Courbet and Bretagne class ships post 20's reconstruction. Weird!:)

Kreig - have you seen these threads? Holy crap, thanks!:D

Hi Terry I knew that I could depend on you shipmate!! Mik

Is there a website besides Maritimequest or Net Marine?
Holy crap, thanks!:D
Might I add a resounding second to that???:D:D I really appreciate your added links to this thread. I have not yet browsed back far enough in the forum to see what I had missed before joining recently. Thank you so much. Many photos I had never seen before.

A pleasure - if it is pictures you are after it is worth trawling through all our photo-galleries, Whilst there is a definite RN bias to them there are also many galleries of as well as French ships also Italian, American and even Russian ships!

I was looking at an old Zip disk today, and I found these. My favorite is the pic of Paris in the mid '50's with minecraft all around, with the pic of Courbet in '39 coning in second!(special mention: Courbet expended as a 'mullberry' harbour ship) I can't for the life of me remember where I found them, but they make me happy and I felt the need to share!:D *Edit* I just finished a book describing England's chronic shortage of Battleships during the Second World War, and I continue to be baffled as to why the Battleships Courbet and Paris were left to languish in port. Could they not have been utilized for convoy escort duty, freeing up more valuable R and Queen Elizabeth class battleships for the Med or Far East stations? Was it an ownership issue? Manpower? Material condition? ????

thank you very much Krieg1981 for sharing these pictures, do not hesitate to post more ! :):) these 2 old french battleships were only used by the royal navy as a floating AA battery furing the early part of the war. But they were not used as battleships, why? Probably because: - Weapons and ammunition of the 2 vessels were not compatible with the weapons of the royal navy, he was therefore upgrade the armament of the ships (a too expansive solution for old ships very vulnerable to torpedoes and german bombs) - The operational status of the 2 vessels should be limited, the 2 old vessels being the end of their career. (and their usefulness in protecting convoys would have been low, I doubt that one of these old battleships can face the german "battle cruisers" or even german "pocket battleships".) - Maybe also the political aspect ?, Because after mers el Kebir :mad:, the Free French Forces (de Gaulle) were very weak (politically speaking). Maybe the Royal Navy did not make the necessary government vichy crazy anger using 2 french vessels.... and by 1943-1944, the 2 old ships were no longer usefull, for this, the choice in 1944 to use Courbet in blockships were no a surprise.

Not a great contribution pic quality-wise, but one I had of Dunkerque from a Naval Historical Society of Australia collection. Date says May 1937. Was that the month of the Jubilee Review?

Thank you for your photos . :) The Neptune in the fairing (dock) is superb . patrice

Love the pic of Paris surrounded by minsweepers! In 1954 Canada sold some Canadian built Bay Class minecraft to France. They were brand spanking new!!! One of them is named after the bay of the river on which I live. H.M.C.S. Miramichi,MCB-150 became La Lorientaisse. It is possible,I suppose, that she is somewhere in that nest of sweepers!

newby member. I'm looking for photos of a French ship called Champignon which I guess means mushroom or fungus. My grandmother sailed from Marseille in March 1938. I did a quick search but have not found anything yet. could someone help me out? thanks! mike portland, OR USA

Firstly I didn't realise that any pictures had been lost from this thread and secondly I dont even know why you have to post them here as we already have in existence two photo galleries for French Battleships. http://www.worldnavalships.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1878&highlight=french http://www.worldnavalships.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1886&highlight=french .

Hello, I think you will find that your grandmother was on the cruise ship Champollion that was sailing out of Marseille in 1938. Send a private message and I'll forward some scans. Cordially John
