rumrat Whats the Commando Carrier in the background in picture ID285? Good set of Pics by the way.

I think it's BULWARK Not 100% sure will check it out. Regards Dave

Albion had type 965 atop her mast I believe, Bulwark didn't. Hope this helps Alan

Alan , I think your right Re the 965 radar so it looks like being BULWARK after all unless someone else knows better ? Go on shoot me down will yer . Regards Dave

A couple more pix of CARYSFORT Dave

And me Dave :p I remember the Bulwark lying up the trot in Pompey just rusting away :( till they took her away. Wasn't she earmarked once to be converted into a crane ship for the oil rigs? Uplifting experience, I suppose :o Alan

Alan, That's quite possible although Iv'e never heard that before ,you generally hear all sorts of rumours about whats going to happen to ships when they are laid up for a long time ,Take FEARLESS and INTREPID for example there has been more stories about whats happening to them than anything else for the past few years. I even heard one buzz that INTREPID was going to be scrapped on the Tyne At A&Ps yard at Hebburn but I doubt it will ever happen. Regards Dave

They're still in Pompey Dave. I took this photo on Saturday 13th.

Nice shot Alan but can you tell which is which ? The mast is a dead give a way Dave

I can't tell Dave. I can see they're different but if I look up for too long I get dizzy:) Here's one I did earlier. Alan

Once again Alan i'm wide open to get shot down, but i was always of the impression that INTREPID had the taller mast in fact it was supposed to be the tallest in the fleet,Anybody know different ? Regards Dave

Dave How about the Victory?:confused::o

Alan, Now that is splitting hairs mate but you could be right , i never gave VICTORY a throught. Dave

Dave Perhaps we'll both get shot down now. Anyway, going back to the Carysfort, I'm sure she was another of my old mucker Joe Archers, who I mentioned in another thread re Ulster and her bumper-car tactics, ships. I'll have to catch up with him, have a tot or two, and find out. All the best Alan

Great pictures thanks for sharing
rumrat Whats the Commando Carrier in the background in picture ID285?
I don't think it is a Commando Carrier:) (I could be wrong though!!!:o) It looks like a Gannet on deck right forr'ad and the wessex helicopters are the wrong colour for a "Junglie" sqdn - they look more like "pingers" Could it be Centaur? FAA helicopters:- Junglie - RN commando helicopter sqdn Pinger - Rn Sonar "dipping" helicopter sqdn

If Teuchter (post #17) is referring to the 17th photo in post #1 of this thread, then I believe the carrier in the background is HMAS MELBOURNE - she's certainly not a Centaur class ship. TimS

Hi All Any one know what has happened to B mounting in pic 8 of post #1? Mitch Hinde

Pic 8 shows the stern. X gun replaced by two squid mortars.

Mitch, Post #1 photo 8 shows "Y" mounting and the Squid magazine which replaced "X" mounting. Tim

Hi Tim Silly me, so it does. Can't tell me stem from me stern, doh:p Mitch Hinde
If Teuchter (post #17) is referring to the 17th photo in post #1 of this thread, then I believe the carrier in the background is either HMAS SYDNEY or MELBOURNE - she's certainly not a Centaur class ship. TimS
The choppers look like Mk 1 Wessex, so they will only have the earlier shallow dip sonar, and the Gannet also seems to be a Mk 1 with the older "Dustbin" radar. Does this help any? Steve

Most likely Melbourne pretty sure Sydney did tolerate those types of aircraft at that time

TimS
I've only just found this thread. You are absolutely correct, TimS. I was onboard CARYSFORT at the time ('65). I remember we were with an Australian carrier but my memory fails me as to which one she was. Best wishes
A couple more pix of CARYSFORT Dave
Can you email me copies of phots. Served on her May 64 to June 66.flew home from Aden. Brigham46(at)yahoo(dot)com

To which photo's do you refer it's been a long time since this thread was last active. You could download them yourself or are you wanting higher resolution ? Send me a PM. I suggest you remove you e-mail address there's a lot of n nasty's out there. Regards Dave

Hi Brigham46 and welcome to the Forum. As Dave suggests and I agree - remove your email address as this is an open forum and could attract unsolicited emails. To do this open your post and click on edit ...... you can then remove that part of the post. Should you want to contact Dave direct you can then use the PM system located at the top right hand corner of the display ...... that way you are talking to Dave and noone else. Hope this helps. Brigham46(at)yahoo(dot)com
Here you are, brigham46, a few I collected during the same period. I served onboard her August'64 to November'65, when I left the Andrew after 14 years. Our last ship was usually better than our current one. For me, Carysfort was undoubtedly my best ship! Best wishes

Thanks for posting a great photo, Pelican! Best wishes

On behalf of his son, does anyone who served on Carysfort 64 to 66, remember an Able Seaman Peter "Fred" Gannon? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Apologies, I enquire for David, who is Peter "Fred" Gannon's son.

Hi al1934 , I do like the view of Carysfort entering sweaty basin at Sembawang. Nothing looks to have changed .. I was first in there in 1966 . A wonderful photo ...
Apologies, I got the wrong name. David is Peter Gannon's son. So it's info on Peter "Fred" Gannon that I am after.
I do remember his name. I was the ship's Scribe at that time and I called out his name every payday but I cannot remember any more than that, sorry. If you go to the ship's website at http://www.hmscarysfort.co.uk/ and look in the Guest Book, there's one been posted there today about him. You may be able to find him in the Photos section for that commission? Best wishes

Hiya al1934 ... yep modern ones , Chichester still hag hammocks , and we took our scran ,down to our mess deck [3E I think it was ]. Then after life changed .. it was bunks and dining hall routine ...afterwards .. I like the page ,on Naval Slang .. on your web site ..BZ

I like the page ,on Naval Slang .. on your web site ..BZ
There were half a dozen bunks in our POs' mess onboard Carysfort and the rest of us (about twice that number) used to sling. By far the most comfortable means of getting a good share of Zs although our mess looked somewhat like the photo of a WW2 messdeck. Best wishes
