Thank you for your reply. The last link is my blog!

Linton's decoration were put into a sale in the late 1980s by his surviving son James.Unfortunately the owner died before the sale took place and the decorations were subsequently sold to the Ashcroft collection in the mid 1990s. The original sale also included a replica of Turbulent's Jolly Roger and a book of cuttings.I am particularly keen to find out what happened to these items.

And more. Thank you again for the links

Hello There, Just a piece of information you might already be aware of. If the owner of Commander Linton's medals had died before the sale you mention presumably this would have been his eldest son. Were you aware that his youngest son, Sub Lieutenant William Linton was amongst the 75 men lost with HMS Affray, aged 21, in 1951. Chalky White Taken from: Beneath the Waves. A History of HM Submarine Losses 1904 - 1971.

I have just finished reading "SUBSMASH" The mysterious Disappearance of HM submarine Affray by Alan Gallop. "Highly recommended" Bob

Chalky it was actually his oldest son who was lost in the Affray. His younger son was invalided from Dartmouth before the completion of his training. He went on to be a solicitor in Norwich.
I am looking for information and photographs of this officer, can anybody help please?
Coming from Newport, I'm particularly interested in this one as (as far as I know) he's the only Newport born Serviceman to be awarded the VC. As has been previously said, the VC presented to Cmdr Linton's widow is now owned by Lord Ashcroft. I'm assuming that it will be on display with the rest of his collection in the new Ashcroft Gallery at the Imperial War Museum, London (it opens tomorrow), so I'm trying to arrange a visit there soon. One of J D Wetherspoon's pubs in Newport is called the "John Wallace Linton", having been renamed as such following representations by (I think) the local Royal Naval Association. They have a collection of photographs and a memorial plaque on display - but not the items mentioned below. There's a memorial to Comdr Linton on the Newport Waterfront, next to the Riverfront Theatre. It's a bollard bearing his name, honours and the date and place of his death. Every Remembrance Sunday, the local Royal Naval Association meet at the site and hold a short service, followed by the casting a wreath into the River Usk. :)

I was at a private viewing of the Ashcroft gallery on Wednesday and I can confirm that the Linton VC is on exhibition there.

Having read the posts I note that there is not one about the Memorial Service to Commander John Wallace (Tubby) Linton which takes place every year betweeb 13th & 18th March depending on the tides. It is held at the Waterside Memorial and is for him and his crew of HMS Turbulent lost in March 1943 when I was a child. A Wreath of Poppies is thrown into the River Usk from the midway of Newport Bridge. I and my Husband and our sons travelled from Southampton for the Inaugaration of the Memorial which is a Capstan which was removed from Newport Docks to be placed along the riverside as a Memorial to Cmdr J W Linton and his crew. There was quite a large gathering of Linton relatives including the rest of my immediate family as I understand he was a cousin of my mother's. His son attended the Inaugaration. Over the years it has mainly been my brother and I who have attended along with a cousin of ours who lives in Newport. I have travelled from Southampton for this Service for a number of years but both my brother and I have now moved away from Newport and since I live in the North East of England I do not think I will be able to get there again. I was brought up knowing that "Tubby Linton" which was what he was always called by the family had been a Commander of a Submarine and had been decorated with three Medals the last being the VC. I know my part of the family were very proud of him. I can also clearly remember when the nes reached us that his son had been lost with all hands on HMS Affray. Having lived in Southampton for 30 years prior moving to the North East we have been to the Museum in Gosport a number of time and last year our younger son took his wife and child there having come to stay with us as he was already living in the North East of the country. A lot of the next generation of the family have now died but there is one of his generation still alive who is my mother's sister who is at the tender age of 104 and lives in Worcester.

Hello Lizzielow.I used to correspond with a lady called Grace Wathen. Are you related ?She also went to the memorial parade in Newport and sent me some very nice photographs which have appeared on my blog. Does anybody in your family have any correspondence with any of the family of Linton's youngest son? I am desperately keen to try and obtain some family photographs of Commander Linton and his wife and I have been trying for many years to find out about the death of Linton's father and his mother's remarriage.
