Italian Destroyers and Torpedo Boats pre 1945

Posts 1 to 50

Encouraged by friendly acceptation of Navigatori class in Mystery Ship quiz I'd like to share with few pictures of Italian Destroyers. Most of them are presented in inter-war period as my interest in ships is focused on this piece of warship history. I realise the subject may be not especially popular but I hope somebody will add a few more pictures both peace and World War Two period

An excellent five star thread Miro. If other posters here dont appreciate them it is their loss. Well done shipmate and thank you very much!:)

Miro - a few years ago on the internet I came across a wonderful site full of pen and ink drawings of all types and sorts of Italian Warships. From what I can gather they were drawn in the 1980`s. They were all drawn in Browns on a beige background - a kind of sepia -tone. Have you ever seen any of them? I would love to find the site again - but cannot work out the name of the artist. I enclose a couple of them to show you what I mean...

Terry, I've never seen these drawings, sorry. Anyway they are beautiful and ful of details. I like them very much!

Thanks for posting the excellent photos Miro. We often see the Italian Battleships but rarely destroyers. As my father served in the RAN in the Med in 1940-41, they are of special interest to me. Do you have any cruiser photos you can post? I have quite a few but they are rather small but I can post them if anyone is interested. Cheers Bruce

Hello Bruce/ Soon I will try arrange something for you;). Meanwhile try this link http://www.bobhenneman.info/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1441

I wholeheartedly agree with Bruce, Miro. A photo-gallery on Pre-1945 RNS Cruisers would be brilliant. It would back up the one I did a few months ago on RNS Battleships. I have some I could add to yours my friend!

Great photo's of the Italian ships. Here's 3 cruisers for you as I'm in the process of scanning my Italian ships. Regards Alan

Nice views Don, thanks. Ilove this of Bolzano. I've already seen it but in small size only. BTW. I'm afraid the middle photo shows Pola rather than Fiume:)

Miro, thanks for the comments, my names Alan not 'don' could you tell me why you think the photo is of Pola rather than fiume as the photo I have actually has the name R I Fiume printed on the bottom left corner. It was chopped off during the scan. I notice that you photo's usually have the name printed in the bottom left corner too. So I assume this one is no different unless you can tell me otherwise. Many thanks Alan

Alan - it is Pola as I have the same picture.

Hello Alan, First of all sorry for name mistake:o All four ships of Zara class were very easy to identify (please compare the pictures in No. 626 post in Mystery Ship quiz): -all but Pola had hull 'depression' in deck break vicinity, -Pola and Gorizzia had different shape and size of funnels plus other pipe arrangement -Fiume had doubled rangefinders above conning tower and in control top plus grating yard on forward mast and a bit smaller funnels than Zara -difference in bridge arrangement -and many, many less prominent features I don't want to bore you with:D I will illustrate it today (I hope) in new topic Italian cruisers in Galleries where you will find some nice shots of the bridges
Hello Bruce/ Soon I will try arrange something for you;). Meanwhile try this link http://www.bobhenneman.info/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1441
Hello Bruce, I have found a while to identify those beautiful cruisers from recomended Website. I've done it for you only:D:D:D and for my archive when I downloaded them;););) Counting from the top: - stern section of Fiume (obvious) -Giovanni della Bande Nere -Giovanni della Bande Nere with Navigatori class destroyer in the background -onboard of old cruiser san Giorgio -Trento(obvious) with Bolzano in the background -Fiume -Giovanni delle Bande Nere with old cruiser Ancona (ex German Graudenz) If interested why these particular please let me know

Great pictures miro and alan.

Hello Alan, What the pics!. I love this Ostro. I'm especially interested in these small two funneled Italian destroyers of Sella, Euro and Battisti classes (and of course Navigatori class and the rest of Regia Marina destroyers!!!!). Please try to re-search your files. Maybe you will find something more. Not necessarly so big and so outstanding quality. And with modernized fire system like Nullo in my previous post, please:):):) By the way Boleno and Lampo belonged to the same class (Folgore Class) but had different shape of bridge front as buit in different yards. It could be nice subject for quiz.:D:D Please keep on with your pics!

I have some of those I will add when i get round to sorting them out Miro..

Terry, I'm waiting for them unpatiently.
