Merchant Ship Production in WW-II

Does any one know how many merchant vessels the common wealth built during WW-II? Failing that, is there a site where I might be able to tabulate a figure. .

Well I did find some production data.... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Military_production_during_World_War_II#cite_note-wwiiarchives.net-22 Commercial forces Cargo tonnage British Empire = 12,823,942 USA = 33,993,230 Italy = 1,469,606 Japan = 4,152,361

John Slader gives a figure of 1240 new-build ships totalling 5,722,532 (presumably gross) tons from UK shipyards. He supplements this with figures for various individual shipyards but unfortunately doesn't give any references, so there's no easy way to check their accuracy. [Slader, John, The Fourth Service: Merchantmen at War 1939-45 (Wimborne Minster: New Guild 1995) p.182.] There's a mass of data relating to merchant shipping in the official history [Behrens, C. B. A., Merchant Shipping and the Demands of War (London: HMSO 1955)] although I can't see any figures directly relating to numbers of new-build ships. There are multiple tables showing gains and losses but all expressed in tonnage rather than numbers of ships. It might be a good place to start, but be prepared to do quite a lot of analysis yourself! To add to Tim's post (#2). The official history of the Naval Service of Canada gives a figure of 403 ocean-going merchant ships of over 1000 gross tons built in Canada between September 1939 and September 1945. [Tucker, Gilbert Norman, The Naval Service of Canada: Its Official History, Volume II: Activities On Shore During the Second World War (ULAN Press: Amazon reprint 2015) p.541.] Ted

An effort mirrored by their disproportionate war effort.
That was a truly magnificent effort by the Canadians. An effort mirrored by their disproportionate war effort.
Johnny: We certainly punched above our weight in WWII. In particular our industrial production of war-related equipment (ships/aircraft/tanks etc., etc) was quite remarkable, as prior to 1939 we had a primarily agricultural/resource producing economy. Sadly our current contribution to NATO is disgracefully small.

I recall reading somewhere that the Canadian truck production exceeded the German truck production during the war.
Not according to Junior, he says you are punching well above your weight and spending quite enough on defence.
Junior??? Assuming that you are referring to Prime Minister Trudeau ... he's said a lot of other stupid things too. Sadly he can get away with this particular statement, as the average Canadian cares nothing about defence matters ... and probably never will. But I think we digress from the topic at hand.
