45 year SHINANO

Posts 1 to 8

In 1972 I started a scratch built (1:1536) model of the IJN's huge "support" carrier. I finally got around to finishing her complete with all 35 triple 25 mm AA mounts! The model IS a pincushion...;) The first pic shows how she sat for 45 years. Fourth pic shows 3 lines of copper wire strands, glued together, for the triple 25s. Last two pics-complete. DFO

Came out very well. Beats me how you still have it, you must have a secure 'hidie hole'. Jim

Thanks! Actually thru all our moves my "Fleet" got packed, by layers, into a now very old cardboard box. Hence broken cranes, masts etc...:( Had most packed away until 2013 when, thanks to VIKRAMADITYA, I started building them again. So now almost all are on display throughout the house....dust collectors!!! Even tho the "connection" between my old MK Is and fingers is not what it was when I started SHINANO....still just adequate. The SHINANO was # 533; now working on 46 year old MIDWAY and have started KAGA. Meanwhile WW2 EMDEN awaits completion!! :eek: DFO

DFO
That's a good idea leaning the funnel to keep smoke from incoming flyers. ( I assume that's why it's like that)

Don't forget that JUNYO (in green), HIYO and TAIHO also had canted funnels along with USN's JFK!! Seems to have worked........ DFO

...to say nothing of a canted model builder! :D Looking good in the carrier department. Next -- Gerald Ford!

Yup....JELLOsee is a terrible thing! My yard is so squared away and functional that it could pass inspection by the saltiest "TOP" (E8 Master Sgt.) in the CORPS!!! :D Only nuke I ever modeled was the ENTERPRISE, alas she has been in overhaul for many a year....:eek: DFO

Well i take my hat off to you .....the only reason I would build that small would be no funds , no space , perfect vision .... I spend enough time looking for hand tools let alone the model ! the size of my hands preclude miniature scale models ...ok 1/96 but now prefer 1/24 [ may have to work in a hanger though :)}
