Royal Navy Ambulance Train Modelling

Royal Navy Ambulance Trains WW1 Modelling The following article is my representation of an RN Ambulance Train. Having scoured the web and various railway societies trying to locate information has left me somewhat bewildered to say the least, especially as I have obtained the required number of clerestory roof coaches, only to find that most of the coaches were cove roofed!!! However, RNAT 2 in the photo that I have, shows that it did consist of clerestory roofed coaches, amongst others, so I have decided that my model will loosely depict RNAT 6, which was not put into service on account of the ending of WW1, so there being no photos available, only you and I will know it’s not authentic! To be able to run it on my ‘00’ gauge layout it will consist of seven coaches along with a 4-4-0 locomotive from LMS (London Midland Scottish) Railway era. First step is to remove roofs, very carefully (one coach end has already broken and had to be rebuilt with scrap plastic! It appears that there was no set position of placing the Red Cross symbol along the carriage sides, so these positions will be standardized on my rake (train of carriages). This requires the infilling of windows with 6 x 11 mm styrene sheet blanks to make a smooth’ish surface on which to later place the transfers. All the coaches were connected with corridor bellows to allow through passage of staff, so I have obtained laser cut black paper concertina bellows, extremely flimsy. To be able to fix these to the coach ends I have fabricated from wood simulated corridor ends, glued accordingly. The following photos show progress so far, still a long way to go. Jack.

Jack, Keep going with your instinct and claim modelers licence for any mistakes which the rivet counters may pick up later.

Thanks David, modellers license it will be! Ward/Cot Coach: Progressed a little further, all existing openings blanked off, then create fixed window openings with scalpel and file, then create double door window openings. Lookout temporarily affixed. Upper light openings to be drilled out above cot positions, even more fiddly!! Then clean it all up and off to the spray booth, thankfully at a mates house!!! Once I/you are satisfied with the finish, convert another 2 to match. 3 more photos. Jack.

The first of the Ward/Cot coaches has had the top lights drilled and filed out, at least 6 hours of labour altold to do that, then a quick primer spray coat that now brings out the required detail. Jack.

Well done Jack , yes its the bane of modellers mate ......not enough hours in the day mate Keep us updated please

Thanks Ivor, updates will be posted, as and when, but it will be a long drawn out build, it's mind numbing at times!!! Jack.

The three ward cars are primed and set aside. The Kitchen car has been reassigned as Kitchen/Diner car with modifications carried out to suit and primed (pics attached) As this is a seven car train, I thought it a waste to use one car as a dining car, leaves more space for the injured to be accommodated, so this car will become the Pharmacy car with surgery space. The two brake cars need little alteration, so will prime shortly. Plodding on slowly, but surely!. Jack.

Its looking good Jack Jim

Keep up the good work Jack , were all watching avidly

Hear hear Ivor, these 'Orstipal Trains is a welcome departure from all those floaty war canoes innit.:D;) Do keep up the excellent work jack. Kind regards, Sandy and Robbie.

Thank you Jim, Ivor, Sandy & Robbie, for your plaudits! Work still ongoing, awaiting the 'paint sprayer Jockey' to come off his shift work cycle next week. Regards to all, Jack. SBA (Sick Berth Attendant) ;)

An update on progress. Paint Sprayer Jockey decided to upgrade his hobby room with a new extraction unit, once this is completed, train carriages will be delivered for painting, sooner rather than later, hopefully!! In the meantime, I started to do trial runs of the transfers that will be used using the paint programme. Printed off on plain paper first, using the water slide paper that I have purchased, once satisfied they are correct and will fit!. The engine has now been purchased, Hornby R2829 4-4-0 Class T9 locomotive which will have to have its DCC unit taken out to be used on my layout, then resprayed in North British Pea Green colours. Not been idle, just being slightly delayed, but such is life!!!! Jack.

well done Jack , always something to do behind the scenes otherwise it don't happen ....keep up the hard work .........Whos the Spray jockey then

Thanks Ivor. A friend is the Spray Paint Jockey, his hobby is military models and everything is striped down, painted, reassembled, etc, etc, works of art to my eyes. His priority at the moment is upgrading the extraction system for the removal of nasty fumes! Jack.

Great stuff Jack and wonderful attention to detail!;) If a job's worth doing .................................... Well done the Sickbay Tiffy.;) Sandy and Robbie.

Jack ive just returned from a visit to the national railway museum at york where a display of ww1 ambulance trains has just begun complete with copy's of the original plans hope that helps Nigel

Thanks Nigel, but unfortunately they are for the Army overseas trains. Regards, Jack.

An update on what is not happening!!!! Unfortunately, my paint sprayer Jockey friend has had to curtail many things due to illness, including being at work, for the foreseeable future. So, I think that it will be up to me to obtain a small air spray kit with compressor and have a go myself. This will be new to me, so may take some time to get things right. I have my eye on an EXPO Airbrush set AB605, not expensive at £69'ish. No point in going upmarket on this equipment, as long as it is simple to use. So, moving forward at a snails pace.......!! Jack.

Thanks for the update Jack. Never fear, I'm sure that you will manage a superb job once you've mastered the new spray kit. All my paint spraying is from aerosol cans, as evidenced by the decorations on London Underground coaches.:o:o:o:o:D;) Regards, Sandy.

Whilst awaiting delivery of spray kit, I've used up a bit more of the juice left in an aerosol can that I found lying alongside a London Underground Train (richly decorated) and sprayed the insides of the seven carriages and roofs, as according to records, the insides of RNATs were all white internally. RNAT - Royal Navy Ambulance Train Jack.

Looks more than "all-white" to me Jack, in fact it looks great.:D Forgive the pun and carry-on regardless, Kind regards, Sandy (and Robbie).

What a frustrating couple of weeks it's been, main problem being a new desktop computer with Windows 10 already installed, a veritable 'pain in the butt' !!!! Then my new paint spray kit went on a circuitous route to get to me  The next problem was getting photo's uploaded to new PC, another of those mysteries that only Microsoft seem to know about  However, perseverance has prevailed, I will now attempt to upload one photo showing the complete rake of seven coaches that have neared completion :) The transfers are proving to be a bit of a problem at the moment, so paper red crosses applied temporarily. Jack. Edit: quality of photo not great, more tweaking to do!!

Next set of photos show preparation for spray gun operations (after a couple of test runs to see if I could actually handle the apparatus correctly ) I made a jig to accommodate the entire undercarriage of the coach to protect from spraying and also secure the coach to a rotating jig that made the process of turning without handling much safer and easier to use. Applied 3 - 4 thinned coats of grey paint and it appeared to be ok to my eyes.;) I won't show each coach individually, much of a sameness about them, except the dining coach, managed to salvage from a scrap coach the tables and seating. The transfers are still proving to be difficult to produce correctly, still working on these. Jack.

Well, I have finally got to my destination with these ambulance coaches. There has been a lot of huffin' an' puffin' this week, transfers sorted with additional coats of clear spray varnish, at least 6 coats, over the transfer printed sheets, to prevent disolving of red cross colour when immersed in water. Then, trying to get any decent photos of individual coaches just ain't happening, so settled for block views of all 7 together, which, according to my picture gallery, look OK. The locomotive still needs a paint job doing on it, but that will have to wait for a while. Thanks for looking in and your patience. Jack.

Looks good Jack, job done and 1st Class. Jim

Jack: As a model train guy, I can appreciate the hard work and creativity that you put into this project. Well done. Brian

Jack, A great train to run around the layout, but what loco is going to pull it? Best Regards David.

David, thanks for comments. I have purchased a Hornhby R2829 Class T9 loco and tender, but firstly I have to remove the DCC Chip, as I run on DC only. Then it's a respray job using Pea Green, a colour used by GNR (Great North Railway) then create some transfers. That will be in the not too distant future. Jack.
