Beware Dropbox

Posts 1 to 28

I had to join Dropbox to see the photos of my son's visit to UK. I have not uploaded any files to Dropbox. So I was very surprised to receive notice that my Dropbox was full. Visited Dropbox & found family photos and my ship photos. But all the titles have been changed to a date. So now: 1. No titles on family photos..... thus no ages of grandchildren etc Years of memories ...Ruined. 2. No titles (ships names) on ship photos ----years of collection completely Ruined. If you download them from Dropbox the dates show as the titles. Hopefully this results from my lack of technical expertise. If any member has an answer on how to recover the titled photos ..... please let me know You can guess that I am devastated right now.... all those years of work. Not wanting anyone else to go through this .....BEWARE using Dropbox. Brian

Brian take your computer down to the local computer shop and I'm sure they will be able to recover all your files. As far as I Know nothing is ever lost as it is on the hard drive forever.

Besides, I consider Dropbox should fix the problem they have caused. Very distressing ! Brian

Brian, are you saying that all your photos etc have been removed from your computer into Dropbox? Can they do that? Did you give them permission to take the stuff, although you didn't download to them? D

Brian
It looks like, by default, if you use Camera Upload, Dropbox changes your file names to date and time they were taken. This appears to be a logical solution as most cameras save the images in a certain way, ie IMG001 throught to IMG999, and then automatically start again at IMG001. Similarlarly, if you take all of your images off a camera and reformat the card it will resort to IMG001 again, thus leading to possible duplication of file names when upload, with the possibility that a new IMG001 could overwrite a previously uploaded IMG001. If you have stored the images on your PC and given them specific titles, they should retain that file name when you upload them to Dropbox. I have just tried that method and it worked for me, my file in Dropbox has the same name as the file on my PC and it has not changed. Also, if you have an existing file in Dropbox, there is an option for you to change the title of that file within the Dropbox editing function. I tried this function also and it worked and I even used a long file name, ie "i am trying to use a very long filename to see if dropbox will save this name" and it did, so there doesn't appear to be a restriction on the length of the file name. After renaming the file, I then downloaded it again and it kept the filename "i am trying to use a very long filename to see if dropbox will save this name" so not sure what is going on with Brian's collection. It will be interesting to hear from Brian what method was used to upload the files. Jim

I really hope that you resolve this issue Brian, it must be awful to think you have lost all that. I was filled with trepidation when my wife told me to put away my Olympus OM2 35mm SLR as we were getting one of the new digital cameras and putting all the photos on to the computer.

I have also had problems with Dropbox, they lost all my files and account so I had to join again, I only used it for transfers so this was annoying rather than tragic. Their help line was hopeless as well. now to compound their unreliability I have had several emails from people I know with dropbox files attached which as malicious software so clearly hackers are using dropbox now. So "Beware Dropbox" is very much the order of the day..... tim

this is one of the "bright ideas" my daughter in law came up with for her and all her friends to interface and pass each other photos of the new babies etc etc. talked Mrs2 out of the idea and won't go near it, even though it it came by default on my Samsung mobile. WhatsApp however has proven excellent over the past 3 years or so

This is sadly a lesson learned, but the other lesson to learn is backing up. Photos are too precious to lose so it's best to back them all up onto other media - I have ours saved on DVD and a "Clickfree" back-up drive, as well. If I were to lose those on my computer they can be recovered, complete with their original file names, dates etc.

Oh yes - my photos that are not on on CDs/DVDs are on an external drive and also on a 128gb flash drive.
Brian, are you saying that all your photos etc have been removed from your computer into Dropbox? Can they do that? Did you give them permission to take the stuff, although you didn't download to them? D
Hi Domino I did not know my files were being uploaded and certainly gave no permission. I presumed that one would upload files by pressing the 'Upload' button Even now it gets worse ..... adding the files on my computer plus those in Dropbox there appear to be a great number now missing ! Hard to contact this firm, I have left messages via their website .. No reply. I had one reply from Dropbox Blog site to say they only copy the files, the originals are left on your computer......NOT SO. Brian

I did not know they had been uploaded , backed up as normal , saddened to see files missing Brian.

How they were uploaded I have no idea ... The first I knew was a message to say ' my free Dropbox was full.... buy some more space ' I appreciate you can rename them .....I can only rename the warships if the pennant numbers are in the photo .....and that is a big job. I certainly cannot recognise the vast majority . Brian
Hi Forester I quite agree.... but the backup has all the files missing .... I did not know they had been uploaded , backed up as normal , saddened to see files missing
Brian. Oh Dear, that is a bummer. :( I do hope you manage to recover the originals.

I would have thought that if your files were uploaded from your PC, they would have only been copied to Dropbox and the originals should still be in situ on the PC. If you are using Windows 10, try using the search facility (bottom left of screen) to see if it can find one of your images, assuming you can remember one of the file names. Jim

Brian, there are a couple of things you could try: 1. Look in the "Recycle Bin" where all erased files are put. If they are there then just 'un-erase' them. If not, then: 2. There are several free file recovery programs available from the web, just Google "recovery software". I have personally used one called "Recuver" which you can download from here: http://www.wondershare.net/ad/data-recovery/?gclid=COPn7_S__8sCFfMW0wodK8wDhw It cannot recover erased files that have been overwritten, but works like magic on others. Good luck.:)

Bill, you are a real treasure !! Thank you for that, I will give it a try. This morning my Dropbox was full......... this evening it is empty !! That is the last straw ! Brian

Thanks to Bill, I used 'Wondershare; and recovered many .jpg icons with the titles underneath. Glee did not last long, every file when opened had no picture. The past month has seen many emails between myself and Dropbox.I kept being referred to the instructions: no mention of my missing files. When I have a tiger between my teeth I do not let go ! (Every Friday I volunteer at the local Wildlife Park !) Latest seems to have freed up my photos, so I can download them. But still with dates, not titles. So have been busy downloading . Some I recognise or the ship in the photo shows the pendant number. Cutting my losses, saving what I can. I could fill up the 'Identify this ship' thread for the next few months. Brian

I have a large collection of files. To accommodate this and keep them under my control I recently purchased a Seagate 5TB External HDD which is connected to my LAN via my router. OK it was more than $200 and I too am a pensioner so I used my credit card and pay it off as I am able.

Used to have a website for business and associated e-mail, paid annual renewal fees, 3 months later found out that I had lost them all because the one man, no dog, business I was using hadn't renewed for me. It's over 6months now and I am still struggling with the problems it is causing. But of course, in this new age of non-responsibility the youngsters who seem to have a grip on IT matters just shrug, mutter "nothing to do with me guv" and walk off looking for another sucker to con.
I had to join Dropbox to see the photos of my son's visit to UK. You can guess that I am devastated right now.... all those years of work. Not wanting anyone else to go through this .....BEWARE using Dropbox. Brian
Coming into the discussion a little late in the day, but having gone through a similar situation a few times with my customers(friends and colleagues), I use Recuva from Piriform, download here for a free version, https://www.piriform.com/products https://www.piriform.com/recuva/download I have used it on hard drives as well as camera cards. Their CCleaner is an excellent free programme as well, but be careful with it's use. As Don stated, backup backup backup backup backup. use every available medium, external hard drives DVD, Blu-Ray, flash drives etc. I keep two 2TB Hard Drives in my Desktop and every month I copy the entire hard drive to the alternate, if one crashes I do not have to reinstall all the programs, all documents and photographs etc are on back up DVDs and external hard drives. I only use WD Enterprise (Black server) hard drives and never Seagate. As I never buy AMD processors only Intel. A little light reading of a similar case. Happy to endorse Barry's recommendation of PIRIFORM.;) Sandy.
Happy to endorse Barry's recommendation of PIRIFORM.;) Sandy.
Thank you for that. As I stated in my post about the hard drive I use, only WD Black, I purchase them from an internet company called Newegg, they do ship to the UK. One of the reasons I don't recommend Seagate. among many failures, I had a 1TB, with a three year warranty, that failed, they refused to honour the warranty. Todays special includes a WD Black 5TB for $190.00 plus free shipping, may not apply to the UK, these hard drives come with a five year warranty. Plenty of room to back up all your files. Hi Brian, Sorry to hear of your experience with drop box. I have never trusted these 'Cloud' or drop-box services where someone else charges you to look after your own private property. I use 3 Western Digital portable HDDs to back up my computers on a monthly rotational basis. Last month I had to take my A*** laptop into A*** Auckland for warranty repairs - thankfully, I had paid $180 to the local computer man up here to give me a full backup (300GB) of all 'My Documents' files (couldn't do it myself as the battery charging circuit had burnt out). Got the machine back from repair - and the keyboard fell out! Took it back and told them I would wait for it. 3 hours later, I get it back, take it home, and then find all the USB ports are disconnected and the WiFi On/Off switch was U/S. Another 70 km back to town, and this time I told them what I thought of their expertise! Can't prove they did it, but numerous files were found deleted once I got it home again - very random deletions, but just enough to stop programs working properly, and a bunch of photos here and there. Was very thankful I had got the full backup done, and I had the files 'copied' to the WD HDD so I could work with them from any computer. I hope you manage to get all your files & photos back - these young IT people don't seem to give a damn about reliable service! And you have to go through some dingaling bird in the Philippines for whom English is definitely not the first language, just to contact the help desk in Auckland, where I didn't see any 2nd generation Kiwis - probably no 1st generation either, truth be known! I think we may have already seen the best years of this planet. Cheers, Skilly

Cheers, Skilly
Have to agree with you, not only do they have no idea what Customer Service is all about, but their attitude is generally "What do you expect with a computer that's 1/2/3/4/5 years old, it's been out of date since you bought it" and "Who sold you this load of rubbish?" You almost don't have the heart to say "YOU DID!" I have taken the attitude that I drive the things as long as I can without any help, after that I buy a new one with all the latest bits and pieces and down load. Never use an external cloud - have my own, never leaves the house!! Surprising how many of the IT spotties keep telling everyone Windows 10 is oh so rubbish, looking back in forums they are same one's who were telling us that Win 7 was oh so rubbish. So why are they selling it?? Makes you wonder why they don't get a real job, doing something they like, with things they are happy with, such as working for non-profit organisations. One indicator to look out for is people with job titles like "consultant" and a copy of "X for Dummies" on open view on their desk. hope it all works out for you guys rgds Dom

Well, I see it has been three months of troubles now ! Downloading from Dropbox was a very slow affair and kept sending the same files again and again.! So I followed Bill's recommended Wondershare: worked wonders and even produced the icons from the adds ! Between them both I ended up with 100,000 files ! Took a long time sorting them and retitling.. but about one third had no photo attached which made it easier. Just tried to backup but Microsoft Backup now not working ! Thanks for all the help and suggestions, guys. Happy computing :) Brian

Dropbox coming under the guns again. I just received a genuine looking email, purportedly from Dropbox containing a link to some images, turned out to be spam HTML links to pharmacy type web sites. My spam catcher had sent the email to the spam directory, so no damage done.
