Help and Parts Needed. 1:150 HMS Warrior c.1867

Posts 1 to 7

Hi all, I am new to scale models. I have planned and started building from scratch a 1:150 model of HMS Warrior as she appeared during her second commission when I had two relatives on board. I have managed to make my own bits and pieces so far but I cant make the 4 ship wheels that are 12 spoke and about 12mm across at 1:150, can anyone help, do you know where I could buy them? Also does anyone have any tips on how to put a thin water line on a model this size? I don't think I would be steady enough to do it by sight alone. There are other thin white lines need later as well. Thank you. To give you an idea of my project I have attach a progress photo of my ship hull, its rough and not detailed yet. Also a photo of a little 7inch muzzle loader I made.

Right the water line issue is very easy to solve Unless you have a line marker which we can assume you don't , then get hold of some of those polystyrene disposable cups you see littering the grass and take them home . Decide what height you need the line at and push a previously sharpened soft lead pencil through the cup whilst its upside down at the height needed and then just move the cup around the hull which sits on a level surface [ use plastercine or blue tack to keep it level whilst marking the line on the model hull As for the line there are loads of model self adhesive tape suppliers on the internet who can supply you with the correct width tape which once applied should have a coat of clear lacquer to seal it in place one complete and there you go job done The muzzle loader..... is that a Mortar?

Cool, Thanks. I have searched for tape before but with no luck, I gave it another go and found some around the right width. My only concern is how well the tape ends will join on the model, I don't want it to look obvious that it was taped. As for the cannon, no it is not a mortar, it is a 7inch rifled muzzle loader of 6 1/2 ton MkI. During the refit prior to the second commission the Warriors guns were replace including the 110 pounder breech loaders with 7 and 8 inch RML's. I have attached a photo I found, with paint on my model the sections look to slope more gently like the real thing. Thanks again. Any other help is much appreciated.

Try joining the tape at the bow and try an angled joint .I have found that if you are careful and laquar the joint a good finish will result ...try on some scrape materials first till you get the correct finish /////good luck

The best tape I ever found was in the Car Assessories Shop ..... ask for "custom coach strip" , comes in all colours and widths. Ivor is bang on , start at the bow and work to the stern . this tape is designed to stay on cars without lacquering but I have always varnished the whole hull after application. One of my ships has had the original tape on for over fifteen years and is still as good as ....... Good Luck with your finish. Dave H

Thanks for your help. I could not find a narrow enough tape so I ended up using 1 x 0.4 mm plastic strips. I used your tips and thankfully it turned out rather well, it was a two person job to glue and hold it in place. You can only see the line is raised if you look really closely which will not be possible once it is in a display case. Progress has been made since my last post, slow and steady considering my lack of knowledge and equipment, but progress non the less. Below are a couple images of the ship. A few display items are on deck, these are not attached or finished. I designed and then had 3D printed the 7 inch cannon (much better then my metal prototype) and ships wheel. Funnels are currently black but I am still unsure of their colour during the second commission. Gun nozzles are in the gun ports but the photo is too dark. The ship is still rough but looking very nice. My next question for you: Does anyone know of a place to buy ship gratings with 0.7mm holes? I assume that it is too small to be manufactured but I thought I would check with you guys. The smallest I can find is with 1 mm holes, which may have to do, but is not to scale. I have tried making it myself but it turns into a mess! Cheers

Sorry mate can't help you there , I've looked at the ones available but as you say the smallest is 1mm in a wood grating 32mm x 32mm costing £4.50 plus post and packing I suspect they all draw from the same source of supply . Model is coming on well , thanks for the update and pictures .
